Bense says TBRC is done
Former House Speaker Allan Bense says he won't try to reconvene the Taxation and Budget Reform Commission, which put the ill-fated amendments on the November ballot, even though the panel is good until summer 2010.
"It would take funding from the House and Senate, and I think they've probably had enough of us," the Panama City Republican told the Buzz. He said today's court decision is a major disappointment, adding that the amendments were fashioned amid "fair and open discussion."
"I'm proud of the commission," said Bense, who led the 25-member group for about a year. "We ended up getting four (of seven) amendments on the ballot, and I hope those get passed. We didn't run the table. That's life."
In an unrelated matter, Bense revealed how the economy is hurting his own road construction business. "I just laid off 80 men," he said when asked if he was going to catch any of the Republican National Convention. "I'd feel guilty having laid someone off and then flying up there."

Why don't they do their job, through normal committees, and fix our state?

This actually is the most relevant statement I've seen today for the Republican National Convention. Of course most republicans don't seem to get it.

... and of course, it was all about we little folk!

Which was exactly the aim of the court attacks in the first place. The work of the TRBC and your freedom to amend your constitution has just been eviscerated courtesy of the Florida Supreme Court.

Hey 4:26, were you on the commission? I wasn't. The people's only way to amend the Constitution is the ballot initiative and Mark Wilson and the Chamber eliminated that. Don't blame the court.

Bense is done. Jeb too.
Posted by: | September 03, 2008 at 04:35 PM
Bense one of the best Speakers we have had in quite a while, however, he was a major disappointment on the TBRC.
Posted by: | September 03, 2008 at 04:36 PM
...ummmmm... your point, 4:30?
Posted by: | September 03, 2008 at 04:39 PM
Dear 4:36 p.m.,
I was very disappointed with the TBRC, but I don't think that any man or woman that I have ever met could have led that group of turkeys. The group was hell bent on destruction, and they succeeded.

4:36, you must not have gotten your pet project through the TBRC. Bense did as Chairman what he did as Speaker - let the process work without trying to shove through his own agenda. He deserves our thanks.

After working so long the Former House Speaker who led the TBRC found out, he could not fool the Public and the Florida Court System! The TBRC members ought to be ashamed of themselves and give all the money they received for working on the TBRC back to our cash-stricken State.

Tom, that would be a grand total of $0 - they weren't paid at all.

4:30 - the people VOTE on those proposals- HELLOOOOOO.
Posted by: | September 03, 2008 at 05:02 PM
4:30 - the Court took it off the ballot. HELLOOOOOOO

4:25 seemingly isn't aware of the legislation that mandating further tax cuts by counties and cities and limited future spending growth. 4:25 also fails to mention portability. The savings from both these measures will be in the thousands of dollars, enough for 4:25 to get to his next Star Wars convention.

Bense's speakership and leadership just looked good because of the underpreforming speakers before him.His "work" on the TBRC just proved this out.
Posted by: | September 03, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Bense thought he could yield power on TBRC like he did in the House and was very wrong.
Posted by: | September 03, 2008 at 06:57 PM
A commission - set up to meet every TWENTY YEARS - to attempt to do what the overpaid pathetic misrepresenting pieces of garbage that have been elected by the 'people' of this state cannot and will not do.
The world changes way too damn much in a twenty year period for this to be even worth it.
If our paid and elected representatives can't and won't do it right, LET'S GET RID OF THE BUNCH OF A-HOLES UNTIL WE FIND SOMEONE WHO WILL.

"It would take funding from the House and Senate and I think they've probably had enough of us," Bense said.

That ain't no joke.

glory upon glories.... the TRBC finally hit a speedbump jeb couldn't muscle through
Posted by: | September 03, 2008 at 07:25 PM
Agree, the TRBC should not be used as a straw man for the work the GOP machine should be responsible for. Cut the school tax out of local property tax bills and eliminate all of these tax exemptions various well connected lobbyists have acquired for their business clients.
I want at least another $240!

Thank you, Speaker Bense, for your service to Florida.

My memory is that Florida voters overwhelmingly voted to approve supermajority support for changes to our states governing document.
Whatever leadership that the Chamber exhibited on the issue was ratified by millions of Floridians of both parties.
