McCollum promotes his press secretary
Attorney General Bill McCollum's press secretary Sandi Copes got a promotion today, to communications director.
"I have full confidence that she will continue her exemplary service to the benefit of Florida's media and public," McCollum said.
Copes, of Malabar in Brevard County, has served with the AG's Office for nearly five years, beginning in economic crimes and moving to the communications in 2005. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in communication and political science from Florida State University. Copes, 24, will earn $64,000.

Congrats Sandi. A well deserved promotion.

Didn't the AG's Office just lay people off last week?

Is that all that gig pays?
Posted by: | September 26, 2008 at 03:37 PM
She cannot be that qualified--she's only 24!

That is all a 24 year old with a 24 year old's qualifications make in that position...

I think it's too much money for a 24-year old to make in state government--there are attorneys in the AG's office with a lot more experience (and JDs) that make less than that.

4:46 - no one cares a fig about the people who actually do the work of the state! Certainly, NOT the Republicans!

Good point about the JDs making no bank. Why would someone work for nothing after law school?
Posted by: | September 26, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Because they want to be prosecutors and public defenders to get the trial experience.

She was given the job as press secretary because they didnt want to look for someone else. she has coveted the director position since JN left. she is useless, not because of her age, there are plenty of young people in high positions that know what they are doing. bottom line: she makes stupid press moves.

She has always been helpful, organized, and overall just good at her job. Besides I am sure other cabinet members have press people making a lot more than that.

Anybody ever wonder why Charlie didn't bring her with him to the governor's office? Because he and Vivian (and most everyone else) hated her. Apparently, she is extremely unpleasant to work with and has an ego the size of state government.

3:29/3:36. Studies show that much of what is said on blogs is biased, uninformed blather by people who enjoy saying hurtful things they can't back up with facts. Shame on you ... that's why you don't have a job like Sandi's and why you're going nowhere in life. Question: Who wants to work with or be around people like you? Perhaps you should introduce yourselves to one another ... or maybe you're the same person. :)

Congrats to Sandi! Must be doing something well; what a great move.

Good Luck Sandi! You are awesome to work with!

File clerk to communications director in less than 5 yrs and only 24?...seems like the attorney general should have someone with much more experience than sandi copes.

Most communications directors I know have 10+ yrs experience in communications and PR and many also are former news people. Maybe this is why Victoria Heller is leaving McCollum's press shop. She has experience. Copes is just a kid.

Wow. Someone with so little experience should not be in this position and should not be making $64K (35-40K tops). Ms. Copes may be a hard worker and that is fine for someone still learning, but she certainly has not earned a director title, and especially not at the cabinet level. How could Victoria Heller have been passed over? Probably explains why she is leaving.
