Meet the winner and loser of the week
Winner of the week:Former Tampa legislator George Sheldon, our winner of the week, couldn't beat Charlie Crist when they ran for education commissioner, but he did earn Crist's respect. The governor tapped him to be secretary of the Department of Children and Families, which, come to think of it, is one of the most thankless jobs in Florida.
Loser of the week: This was a good week to stock up on Rolaids for state Republican Party chairman Jim Greer, our loser of the week, who would like to get re-elected after November. A slew of polls showed Obama taking the lead or at least neck-and-neck in Florida. And the Rothenberg Political Report concluded that three GOP congressional incumbents — Tom Feeney and Ric Keller in the Orlando area and Lincoln Diaz-Balart in Miami — have a good chance of losing.

Jim Greer as loser of the week. Surprise!
More like loser of the last two years.

I think the American people are the biggest losers this week.
We're out $700 billion to bail out Bush's economic policies.

GOP'ers should not sweat it because it seems as though Chairman Greer has the illegal alien vote in his pocket. This must be one of the reasons why the state GOP has not done anything about illegal immigration in Florida. Ooops what about those American workers who have lost their jobs or not seen increases in their wages because of illegal aliens. Yea, you made good Obama voters out of many and others will just sit it out recognizing that Greer's GOP does not represent the best interests of the average Floridian.

On PBS this week, Greer showed he is still in denial that the Obama campaign is running circles around him. We need a new party chair
JIM GREER, Chair, Republican Party of Florida: On several occasions, I've asked my staff to help me find and locate all these victory offices of the Obama campaign, all these thousands of paid staff people, and we can't find them. I think it's a marketing ploy; I think it's a phantom organization in the state.

Bye-bye Jimmy G. Want to bet a term limited House members gets the party chairman post?
Posted by: | October 05, 2008 at 10:56 AM
Greer has done more in the the last two years for the GOP in Florida and most say we would be in worse trouble if he had not been Chairman, Greer will get a second term. But I do agree things are bad for the GOP.

10:56, oh please tell, first Greer has done what many believe is a good job( some say a Great job) and he has the votes to win re-elect. Plus lets not forget that Crist will do whatever it takes to make sure Greer is re-elected Chairman. My bet if there's no re-elect for Greer , theres no money or help from Crist for the State Party and then the RPOF goes back to being a non-player. Greer just needs to keep working on winning Florida for McCain and then the re-elect is in the bag!!

Greer is simply a legend in his own mind.

Greer and the GOP special interest hacks have run their course. They have demonstrated as a party they cannot lead and the voters will soon render their judgment on that.
Republicans have come to beleive they can win an election by playing golf rather than knocking on doors, holding information events in non-stronghold areas or delivering for the greater good first and foremost.
The GOP has come unglued with oneupmanship and outreach baloney. You don't grow the base by catering to a bunch of special interests groups, you grow the base by developing solid core values, sticking to them and welcoming those who share them with open arms.
Patience and perserverence beat panic and pandering.
The GOP has run off as much of its base or more than it has attracted by trying to niche market. Their is already a party for that and the Democrats are professionals. This will be evident from the election results on Nov 5th.

You are nuts. Of course Florida is close...there are 1/2 million more registered Democrats than Republicans. It is ALWAYS close. It is not a reflection of Greer...it is a reflection of the political climate and the registration numbers. The same goes for the Republican incumbents supposedly "in trouble". The fact is, the D's should be able to pick up 10 seats in the state legislature and 4 seat in the congressional arena...they won't because Greer and Crist have helped the state party weather the storm.
The winner of the week was clearly Gov. Sarah Palin who answered more than enough questions about her ability to return the focus to the top of the ticket. A close second was John McCain who demonstrated great leadership during the bailout deal. As for biggest loser...Alex Sink. A swept under the carpet scandel in her office forced the resignation of two of her most experienced staff members.

First off, Sheldon was the biggest loser because he got the CFS job, and he has to try to hold that agency together while the Legisalture and the Crist administration destroy the funding for it.
But, it isn't Greer's fault that McCain, Feeney and the Diaz-Balarts are going to lose. There is only so much propaganda and "ground war" that can be run to help a losing message before you lose anyway.
My personal biggest loser for the week would still be Jeb Bush even though the three TBRC amendments were wiped off the ballot over a month ago because the victory (defeat) still feels so sweet. It should count for at least six or seven weeks.

You must be part of the education establishment. You're bitter, you're petty, and you hate the thought of actually being accountable for educating our children. At least you seem to fit the profile of educators in the classic tome, A Field Guide to the Losers of America.
I'm sure you enjoy gloating with your fellow flatliners during your twice-a-day union-mandated rest breaks. Don't choke on your Cheese Doodles.

the good news is that Johnny Walker is up by 20 points

Are you kidding, John McCain lost the opportunity to become President of The United States of America this week.
He is the biggest loser of the week because he proved that he is not a Maverick when he voted for the Bailout Bill despite it being loaded up with pork barrel spending and unrelated tax measures.
Now that John McCain cannot run on being a Maverick and cutting government spending/earmarking/pork barrel spending etc. what is he left to run on "the surge", one positive aspect in a war that 2/3rds of America no longer supports?
What a joke this McCain has turned out to be.

This is not Greer's fault, the Republican brand name is in the dirt, Ive seen Greer on the stump and he does a good job motivating the troops, its just very hard in these times. I must say if Greer was not our party Chairman and Crist our Governor, I think we would be in much worse trouble in the State.

If McCain wins Florida with things so bad right now, it will be because of 2 reasons.
1. Charlie Crist got out and campaigned hard for McCain in Florida. But should he, thats the ?
2. Greer told them ( McCain ) to get there head out of there As. in time and start seeing things are going south and do something about it.
This campaign is the worst run Statewide campaign anyone has ever seen in Florida and they wont ask anyone for advise or help.
Some of us our so glad we declined when asked to work on it back in Jan.

They didn't follow up on my recommendation for the biggest loser of the week.
BUT it seems SPT is the biggest something of the week as they continue to sell newspapers in the median of intersections which is against the law!
Do as I say, not as I do!

Obama friend, Ayers, and the article that started it all:
NY Times 09/11/01
No Regrets for a Love Of Explosives;
In a Memoir of Sorts, a War Protester Talks of Life With the Weathermen
By DINITIA SMITH
''I don't regret setting bombs,'' Bill Ayers said. ''I feel we didn't do enough.'' Mr. Ayers, who spent the 1970's as a fugitive in the Weather Underground, was sitting in the kitchen of his big turn-of-the-19th-century stone house in the Hyde Park district of Chicago.
The long curly locks in his Wanted poster are shorn, though he wears earrings. He still has tattooed on his neck the rainbow-and-lightning Weathermen logo that appeared on letters taking responsibility for bombings. And he still has the ebullient, ingratiating manner, the apparently intense interest in other people, that made him a charismatic figure in the radical student movement.

Greer isn't ever close to the biggest loser. He still has all the voter caging, "voter match," and other tricks to make sure that there really isn't a contest. You know, kinda like Cuba or Russia.
