When I picked up my wife at the close of the day at her job, we saw an old man trundling the janitor's cart into the offices. An old,old man. He is very nice but he is in his mid 80's. He is a WW2 veteran, and his wife finally succumbed a year ago to a long illness.
As part of that process he lost their house
to help pay the costs. He is broke, and to pay his creditors he has to work this job as long as he breathes.
The indignity and extraction of every last bit out his familie's hide to pay off one or another enterprises that feed and grow on misery is a paradigm for America.
I saw him for the first time yesterday (after my wife had explained she talked to him the day before) and I crossed eyes with him.I am both saddened, enraged and numbed beyond words that this is a fate for me and maybe millions more like us if this
"system" is reformed in a minor way to keep all the existing problems on life support for decades to come.

There is no "mortgage crisis", its a derivatives and leverage crisis. The total number of foreclosures is around 1 million. That is about 1/52 of the total US housing market, less than 2 percent. How, possibly, could 2 percent of the total number of mortgages crash the entire world financial market? It CAN'T. Its a smoke screen by people who really screwed up. You have to do a lot of research to find the truth. You won't find it reading and listening to Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter.

Maybe if Mr. Fecke, featured in the mailer, and his union buds cared more about rewarding people according to quality of work instead of seniority, he wouldn't have to choose between a 50 cent raise or "decent health care benefits." Maybe if he weren't having to carry so much dead weight around he'd have both and more besides. They're no better than the execs with their golden parachutes.

Is it amazing to anyone else that the focus of any economic talk nowadays seems to focus on Wall Street? The government and the talking heads are not focusing on the source of the problem, to be sure, and are completely ignoring the ugly sores that are popping up everywhere.
I might be a little naive when it comes to the big Republican investment banking screw-up, but let me try a parental analogy. If my kids get caught coloring on the wall, I'm sure not going to give them more Crayons to replace the ones they used up defacing my home.

When the reality of this crash hits – and trust me, it ain’t over – all you corrupt corporate lollypops are going to wish you had a Union to protect your job.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 01:17 PM
Maybe if Democrats Frank and Dodd weren't busy dating executives at Fannie Mae or receiving sweet deals on their mortgages this housing disaster might not have happened.
Their indiscretions instead of honesty may have been the turning point for stopping this disaster before it started.

Lets see the union protect its workers at Ford when the company stops manufacturing. Maybe the unions should consider that they have contributed to their company's lack of competitiveness.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 01:21 PM
1:21 Japanese automakers take great care of their workers. No union is necessary. They seem to be very competitive. Please explain.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 01:25 PM
Read a little history.
There would be no middle class if it weren't for Unions.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 01:28 PM
1:28 Right, but only because selfish corporations make them necessary. Since I don't see an endo to selfish corporations in the US, they are still very necessary.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 01:38 PM
Any republicans want to come out of the racist closest today? It seems to be all the rage.

RCP polls shows that John McCain still has failed to nail a single piece of Jello to the wall.

bush, 2001: hey guys, we're gonna kill bin laden
*fails in afghanistan, invades iraq*
bush, 2008: hey guys, we're gonna save the banking industry
*markets crash, leaves office*

Even the corporate thugs who hate Unions, would not be where they are were it not for Unions… irony is pretty ironic, isn’t it?

Flip W to M =Same.
John McSame.

Three independent sources report that at least one such shadowy 527 group is planning a radio campaign on the weekend before the election that will ask, "You can’t trust a black man, how can you vote for one?" It is such a blatant appeal to racism, the ad will be scheduled to air only in a few southern radio markets on Nov. 1 or Nov. 2, just before the election.
GOOD JOB REPUBLICANS
Posted by: Jason | October 10, 2008 at 01:51 PM
the presidential race is over guys.
let's go rays!
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 02:00 PM
At 1:21 someone wrote, "Maybe the unions should consider that they have contributed to their company's lack of competitiveness."
This statement is indicative of the Republican view of not only unions but the middle class unions helped to create. Republicans see both as impediments to the global competitiveness of American corporations.
It matters not whether you believe the Republicans are executing a plan to destroy the middle class or that the middle class's demise is the result of the unintended consequences of bad Republican policies. The fact that more Americans have fallen out of the middle class and below the poverty line in the last eight years than at anytime since the Great Depression is indisputable.
Posted by: ALW | October 10, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Jason, I could see the Democrats doing that in some non-compete states to stir up discontent in other states out west. Good trick D's if you can pull it off...

Illegal Immigrants… the New Corporate Slaves!
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 02:45 PM
I am an ex-union member here. Boy am I glad I am out. It was good money and my job was safe. But the idea of seniority killed it for me.
I now make triple the money and have advanced by leaps and bounds in my career.
The union is what is going to finally bankrupt GM. The healthcare committments alone are unsustainable.
This once great company, not too long ago had hundreds of billions in cash reserves. Yesterday the anti-american scum like George Soros "busted the place out" by short selling its stock.
But you will not see this story on the news or read it in the Times.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 02:56 PM
i want to join a union
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:03 PM
2:56, it was corporate greed that bankrupted GM... and it is corporate greed that caused the illegal immigrant problem in this country... and it is corporate greed that has caused the current economic debacle… and it is morons like you that feed that greed.
When this mess is in full bloom… you’ll wish you belonged to a Union.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:12 PM
look at McCain record on veteran voting turned down more than he voted for in the last 6 years. bashing each other is not the way to go. people want to hear how you are going to fix the econ, and jobs, housing market not bashing every one, that won't get you any place people are turned off about it. I guess when you are behind you go to untruths to sell your program. and i'm a republican and a vet to. can't vote for mccain he wants to say in iran untill we win at the cost of lives for our troops the next place he will invade is pakistan and lord knows where else. the last debate he looked 100 yrs old stubling around with his hand shake moving so sightly he has no clue what's going on wants to reward banks in an bail out for the mistakes that they made.give tax breakes for the rich, he is running this time to make up for the 2000 race that he lost. time is running out john age has caught up with you.your behind the times. need a fresh face as our president obama is the man. in 26 years what have you done if obama had the same 26 years he probably would have passed more laws than you first of all you and obama have no expierence of cammander and chief, the same with clinton , carter, jfk, and the rest of the first tern presidents. give me a break
Posted by: jim | October 10, 2008 at 03:13 PM
Again at 2:56 - you see the Republican view, nay hatred of not only unions but the middle class that unions helped to create.
Wake up folks before it's too late.
Posted by: ALW | October 10, 2008 at 03:15 PM
Hey ALW and that bonehead 3:12; corporate greed my a55.
If they still made good products, they would be bigger than ever.
I wish that for one second, you could see what it is like to employ a person.
In 2005 GM was paying the healthcare cost for 1.1 Million people at a cost of $5.2 Billion. The cost was rising $400 Million per year.
Also:
G.M.'s pension liability for 2004 was $89 billion.
Get a grip of reality folks: this is not corporate greed.
ANd to my two bonehead poster boys for communism; how many new American cars have you bought in your life? Me 12 and counting (as soon as my Z06 arrives that is)
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:24 PM
The Unions drove American jobs overseas. That's because when the Unions stopped the corporations from paying American workers like slaves, the corporations went looking for slaves elsewhere. Corporations have no heart, soul, conscience, or patriotism. They only have a bottom line on the P & L statement. They answer only to greed.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:34 PM
3:24, please shut up before you embarrass us any further with your weak A S S attempts at justifying your delusional world.
Love,
Greedy Corporate CEO’s who minimize the product quality to increase profit… then blame it on the worker.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:34 PM
3:34 (1&2)
You must leave the country NOW. Go to Cuba or China. The government owns everything there and you will get a living wage if you just show up.
You way of thinking is not compatible with our economic system, even if your hero Obama is elected.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:37 PM
3:24,
Who made the computer you're bloging you BS from... moron! We know who invented it, then outsourced it for profit!
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:37 PM
3:37,
You must leave the country NOW. Go to Cuba or China. The government owns everything there "INCLUDING AMERICA" and you will get a living wage if you just show up.
Your way of thinking is not compatible with logic, even if your hero McSenile is elected.
by the way... good luck in Iran if he does... moron!
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:39 PM
You know what's funny, sort of. The stupid Norquista at 3:34 knows that GOP policies only benefit the top 1% of the most wealthy people in this country. In his delusional thinking, however, he somehow believes that if he keeps spewing the party blather as directed, he will somehow become an exception to that rule. If the wealthy are allowed to continue their consumption of the middle class as they have so far, his day will come also. The best he can hope for is lapdog status, more than likely, he will just go under without a sound, but with a very surprised look on his little doggy face.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:40 PM
See you two pinheads, here in America; you too have the freedom to save some money and open a business.
See, thats the trouble with people like you. You never achieved anything in your life. You failed in school, held low wage jobs and drank your beer every night.
So instead of actually doing something with your life and contribute to our society; you sit back and blame greedy corporations for the worlds ills.
People like you are what ills the world; for profit corporations are the medicine.
Communist dolts all of you.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:41 PM
Sorry, meant that for the Norqusita at 3:24
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:42 PM
3:41 are you in the top 1% that benefit from the neo-con policies? If not be afraid. Or wake up and vote for Obama. Corporations have run wild with the support of Bush and his traitors. The evidence is there for you to see.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:44 PM
YOU SAY
"If the wealthy are allowed to continue their consumption of the middle class as they have so far, his day will come also"
Come how? The last thing I am worried is a band of greedy CEO's coming after me.
Oh no, here comes that guy in the shark skin suit. Watch out, hide....
Nah, people like you, the brain dead communists are more alarming.
Try Venezuela, your butt boys Danny Glover and Sean Penn love it there.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:47 PM
If what you mean by neo-con policies is hard work; yes thats me and I benefit from it greatly.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:49 PM
My guess is that you either a 20 year old slacker or a 55 year old washed up hippie.
Which one?
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:50 PM
Top 1%? Yes in fact if you make $100,000+ you are in the top 1%.
In fact, that kind of money puts you in the top .01% worldwide.
The view is nice from up here, do you agree?
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:53 PM
My guess is that you are a freaking greedy corporate moron... period.
Funny how you greedy corporate closet pervs have time to blog... while the Union guys are making you wage.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 03:59 PM
A little doubt creeping in there Norquista? You're lying to yourself unless you answer the question truthfully. Stop acting like an agent and ask yourself. Your future may depend on it. I know there's nothing wrong with everyone living comfortably. I'm not a communist or a socialist. Capitalism can work, it's just gotten out of hand, and it will eat you up eventually, if you aren't way way way up there in wealth. So quit doing the devil's work for them.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 04:00 PM
What's the latest count of young American men and women who have died in Iraq for corporate greed and daddy's revenge?
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 04:01 PM
I think it 4,200
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 04:06 PM
Oh and one more thing: I will pay your one-way ticket to the destination of your choice:
Cuba, China or Venezuela, whats your preference?
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 04:07 PM
You don’t have to pay me anything… besides, based on your rhetoric, I suspect you don’t even have the intellect to pay attention.
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 04:21 PM
when can we shoot all the people who voted for bush?
Posted by: | October 10, 2008 at 04:42 PM
Not to worry Republicans, it may be too late to save the middle class and small businesses. Once those damn expensive middle class workers have lost their jobs and businesses the energy and transportation problems will also be solved - because the corporate buses will be picking up all the worker bees and delivering them to the factory. We will once again be a manufacturing power using our home grown cheap labor.
Yes it can and very well may happen right here in America.
Posted by: ALW | October 10, 2008 at 05:56 PM
I remember a comment someone made a while back when jobs first started to be lost oversees in big numbers.
"Pretty soon we are all going to be selling each other insurance."
Posted by: Gator(R) | October 10, 2008 at 06:19 PM
4:42 - obviously one of those democratic, pro-choice, anti-war, anti-death penaly, love and peace, sensitive new age guys.
How do you propose to find them? Until you figure out how, you probably ought to hold off.
