Congrats Atwater, remember who won Florida
The make-up of the Florida Senate didn't budge an inch. And some of the races were downright nasty this season. So it should come as no surprise that Senate Democratic Leader Al Lawson issued a press release Wednesday congratulating incoming Senate President Jeff Atwater on his re-election.
(Some veteran-watchers say it's pretty gutsy for Democrats to even try to challenge an incoming senate president up for re-election.)
But this was no run-of-the-mill kowtowing. Lawson reminds his colleagues that "by an overwhelming majority, the people of Florida played a pivotal role in delivering this state -– for the first time in four presidential elections -– to a candidate who not only broke the conventional stereotypes in every sense, but offered the first tangible ray of hope to so many of our citizens desperate for opportunities so elusive and so hard to come by."
He ends the press release by asking Senate leadership to remember how Floridians voted for president this Legislative season.
“In this new day, this new beginning, let us always remember that whatever our differences, we are all Floridians, all members of the Florida Senate, and all hopeful that your presidency mirrors the reflection of a state ready for change.”

a bit arrogant on Lawson's front. It was a waste of money to try to compete if they weren't going to go whole hog!

Al Lawson helped preside over the biggest missed opportunity since Tora Bora! Obama's massive GOTV effort that gave him Florida had little or no effect down-ticket where the Dems just barely held their own.
Winning the Presidency is certainly huge and commendable. However, the failure to capitalize on the effort down-ticket is either vivid proof that folks were voting for Obama the Man and not for Obama the Democrat or that Thurman, Lawson, and Sands are the greatest failures since Lehman Brothers. Neither choice bodes well for the Dems.

Was that a vote against out of control spending - no problem... I am sure Republicans can reduce government spending no problem - but will Democrats complain?

I challenge the judgment of the Democratic leadership. They do not choose experienced individuals to carry out their intiatives instead choosing Yes men and women who are incapable of working independently. It may be that they are not very good bosses at delegating work, and they hire individuals who are incapable of seeing what work needs to be done and then actually doing the work.
either way, I agree with 11:19

The letter is an indiciation that he knows what's coming.

Lawson knows what's coming. He ran D's against Atwater and JD. It was a foolish move, and he'll have to pay for it.

Too bad Lawson but you Bird got the finger before she got blasted!

No comment on the Dems' leadership, but I think the results of the legislative elections have more to do with district lines than anything else.

He will pay...we will finally have a Republican Senate.

Will Senator Atwater govern from the middle or the right?

Al Lawson ran a grossly unqualified Linda Bird against Senator Jeff Atwater. Her campaign was full of lies, arrogance, and nasty - attacking anger. How sad that the Dem's have to stoop to such dirty politics, no character, no ethics.
We are proud of Senator Jeff Atwater and obviously so are the folks in his district.
