Attorneys defend the JNC
A group of 25 attorneys has written a letter to JNC Supreme Court chairman Robert Hackleman supporting their work. The Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission, which met via a phone conference two weeks ago, at Gov. Charlie Crist's request, to consider submitting more Supreme Court finalists.
They attacked a letter written last week by a group of 17 high-powered attorneys criticizing the JNC selection process, saying, "their lawyerly cloak is a thinly-veiled attack on the underlying substance, namely the most recent nominee added to the list sent to the Governor for consideration."
The pro-JNC letter was signed by a group that included Rep. Darryl Rouson, Mac Stipanovich, Chuck Hobbs, legal adviser to Florida NAACP, Raquel Rodriquez, former legal counsel to Gov. Jeb Bush, and lobbyists/attorneys Wilber Brewton, Fred Karlinsky, Adam Babington and Mark Delegal, among others.

Adam Babington?!?! The boy's a whelp! The lady who runs the Capitol gift shop could best him!

Well, they did an OK job until they went back and added that Jebbite wing-nut to the mix. How many are suffering nationwide because of failed Bush policies? And that Jemenez guy was part of te team that help Jeb subvert the Constitution and install the Worst President Ever in office! Talk about a bad choice for the Judiciary!!!

Yale grad who is currently the General Counsel for the US Navy, oversees 650 attorneys worldwide, argues in front of the US Supreme Court yet he is unqualified to be a FL SC Justice.
183 day US Senator runs for POTUS, 'community organizer', ties to terrorists and shake down artists, never has managed or run anything in his life yet he is about the President. Priceless.

It is refreshing that a group of attorneys had the gumption to support the JNC, Governor Crist, and the concept of diversity. Our Courts should reflect the rich and diverse nature of our state. It shouldn’t be a reflection of who currently is in the “in” crowd in the white male dominated Florida bar. Thank you Governor Crist for convincing the JNC to do the right thing.

11:05, why was he unqualifed the last two times the committee sent names to the governor, but is qualified now? Talk about affirmative action for unqualified Bush guys!! This is how Brownie came to run FEMA and how Bush got into Yale and Harvard.
Posted by: | December 30, 2008 at 11:15 AM
Our courts should reflect Constitutional Law… period. Save “the rich and diverse nature of our state” for the bullspit criminal politicians that rob our State on a daily basis.
I don’t give a sh-t if they’re white, black, green, orange, male, female, gay, straight, tall, short, a biggin, thin, whatever… just follow and apply the damn law equally!

"yet he is unqualified to be a FL SC Justice."
You said it! It must be some little clause in the fine print about upholding the Constitution. Instead of hiring on with Bush Inc. to orchestrate an end-around and install a dictator as POTUS.
Not qualified, indeed!

11:15 - what are you? Racist?
Posted by: | December 30, 2008 at 11:23 AM
The Florida Bar and our Judiciary are the last bastion of our white male dominated culture. That is why the Bar is so upset with Governor Crist. Governor Crist is preaching diversity. The bar is preaching the status quo.

11:23
No, I doubt 11:15 is a racist. However, 11:15 is apparently a victim of structural racism. Structural racism refers to the phenomenon that race and ethnicity works as a social and political construct that works to maintain the advantages associated with whiteness and the burdens associated with color and ethnicity, even as laws, policies and practices change. One of the main problems with structural racism is that most observers are not even aware of it. It takes political leaders like Governor Crist to highlight current racial and ethnic disparities to explain why race and ethnicity continue to be such a potent predictor of socioeconomic well-being, and identify solutions for changing the status quo. Governor Crist has been working on a solution; sadly, there are those who are ignorant of structural racism, and wish to continue business as usual.

True, what interest does the Bar have in changing the status quo?
They've been making out like bandits for decades...

Before everyone gets upset, please be advised that this is a direct quote from the former Chief Justice Terrell of the Florida Supreme Court in an opinion refusing to let Virgil D. Hawkins into the University of Florida law school:
“Some anthropologists and historians much better informed than I am point out that segregation is as old as the hills. The Egyptians practiced it on the Israelites; the Greeks did likewise for the barbarians; the Romans segregated the Syrians; the Chinese segregated all foreigners; segregation is said to have produced the caste system in India and Hitler practiced it in his Germany, but no one ever discovered that it was a violation of due process until recently…Such is in part the predicate on which the states are resisting integration.” State v. Board of Control, 93 So. 2d. 354, 360 -61 (1957).
This horrific example of adherence to previous precedent is what Governor Crist and the Florida Supreme Court JNC are fighting against. Shame on those who cast dispersion on Governor Crist and the Florida Supreme Court JNC for attempting to expand the pool of qualified applicants. The original letter of December 22, 2008 criticizing the JNC rings awfully close to Chief Justice Terrell’s opinion.

2:32 Nobody cares what race Jimenez is, OK? He's a Jebbite. He's a wingnut. And most damning, he participated in the subversion of our Constitution in which the Supreme Court far overstepped it's authority and appointed George Bush President. If Crist picks him it will be a farce and yet another example of partisan deck-stacking to further a political agenda. No thanks!

I see. The letter of December 22nd wasn't about the JNC process after all; It was about the substance. It wasn't a legal argument; It was a political one. Thanks for the clarification.

Oh well........this removes all the stench of ad hoc political practices from the whole procedures. If I'd only known this group of lawyers would be comfortable with procedures that look much like how your average high school newspaper is run...well, I would have just relaxed and quit worrying that the barriers between the courts and politics were being eroded.
I guess I'll just go back to sleep and quit paying attention.

rejoice that jeb has hoodwicked the liberal attorneys again---its the commie liberals who are going to take us down the path of a deconstructed destruction. avoid them at all cost. long live jeb. viva the counter-revolution.
and i just got a letter from the office of the president-elect that mandates my unvolutary attendance of thought re-education school.

12:52 I hope your deprogramming goes well. As a service to you, let me get you caught up on the current events you've missed while you were away in Bush-Cult-Land.
First, the Bush Presidency as been declared the worst ever. Jeb's chances of assuming the office of Dictator-in-Chief are now slim to none.
Second, the US and World economies are in the tank as a direct result of failed Reagan-Bush conservative deregulation and irresponsible tax policy.
Third, here on the local scene, we have discovered our own version of Ted Stevens (yes your wingnut poster boy has been indicted, convicted and ousted). His name is Ray Sansom, author of the soon to be famous "School For Scandal" and "The Hangar to Nowhere." The good news is that Jeb! managed to serve out his Governorship without any of his indictable offenses coming to light.
Well, hope this has helped you. Remember, when you wake up tomorrow, it will be 2009, the beginning of the Era of The Democrats!

Why aren't the critical issues in the following video ever being covered by the news? How far into denial will you go until you wake up and realize the ignorance? Soon this newspaper, it's employees, and all the readers will go out of business and into poverty beacuse you turned your back on the Europeans that built you up and support you.

Y'all started yelling that eight years ago - that was when y'all decided that everything that you thought was true must be the universal consensus.
Y'all were wrong about nearly every damn one of those consensi, too. Give it a few years - people a few generations out are going to be referring to the Dems of the 90's and the early 2000's as another McCarthy era.

Uh, no, hon, that wasn't it at all, you should start listening to those Barney Frank videos people have been playing for you. He really was telling the truth back before he started lying about it. And, too, you should look up some of those bigger words the econ guys kept using back when you'd walk past their department on the way to The Sociology of Gender-Balanced Art Journalism as Revolution class.
