Reviewing Rubio's personal balance sheet
Now that Gov. Charlie Crist's personal finances are back in public view, how about a peek at those of his U.S. Senate rival, former House Speaker Marco Rubio? The 38-year-old Rubio, a father of four, reports a net worth of $8,351 and is more than $900,000 in debt. He has two homes, one in Miami and one in Tallahassee. In 2008 he received $300,000 in salary from the law firm Broad & Cassel, $69,000 as a teacher at Florida International University and $45,000 as speaker. He still owes $115,000 in student loans.
Rubio also earned income in 2008 from Rubio Consulting, which he describes as a business and media consulting firm. The company's principal clients are Univision, a Spanish-language TV network, and Marin & Sons, a Miami consulting firm. Rubio added this notation to his financial disclosure form: "Marin & Sons retains Rubio Consulting to introduce their clients to potential business partners in the community. Rubio Consulting does not lobby before any governmental entity. Retainer began June 1 (2008), after last session in Florida House was concluded."
Marin, a Tallahassee lobbyist, is registered to represent five clients in the capital, including Independent Living Systems of Miami, whose lobbyists include Viviana Bovo, wife of state Rep. Esteban "Steve" Bovo, R-Hialeah. Here's more background on the Rubio-Bovo business relationship.
*

He's really a lobbyist-attorney.
One of the worst combinations in the universe.
Rubio better stay in the law firm and forget about the Senate.
Besides, he needs the money. Can make more as a lobbyist-attorney.
He is bad news for Florida.

Anyone that much in debt is always at risk for bribery. And given the special interests he associates with, it's not a big leap.

Well, I guess I will no longer vote for him. That and the Diaz-Balart defection did him in.
Posted by: Professor Alejandro Pomar | July 07, 2009 at 10:42 AM
This is just what Bush did, live it up and garner all the debt he wanted.
I heard Rush explaining how debt was good a couple years ago,of course its not on his archives now.LOL

Come one, think this through,we badly need Rubio to have a good showing,we need him to beat up on Crist.
The Dems will have no trouble with Rubio but Crist?
Come on,tone down the anti-rubio rhetoric
Posted by: Leave Rubio alone,we need him to beat or beat up on Crist | July 07, 2009 at 10:46 AM
10:46, you're right, of course. But imagine what a disaster it would be if Rubio were elected. I mean, seriously, the guy IS a little fascist. He'd do his best to turn us into a prop 13 ghetto state like California, at the behest of his big business masters. Come to think of it, though, Charlie's doing the same recently.
Meek's the man!

Never waste a good Fascist.
Posted by: Rahm Emanuel | July 07, 2009 at 10:55 AM
Don't vote for him because he has debt? Wow, I've heard it all know. The vast majority of Americans have debt so I find it hard to see the logic in voting against someone becuase of that fact. I suppose this means only rich people who pay all of their bills in full should hold public office. Perfectly insane.
Posted by: Stupidity should be painful | July 07, 2009 at 11:13 AM
10:55 you mean because fear of right wing fascists drives people to the Democrats in droves?
Posted by: umm..OK | July 07, 2009 at 11:16 AM
So wait, I'm confused. He's not wealthy...so that makes him bad?
I thought it was the wealthy people who were bad, stealing from the poor and refusing to pay their fair share of our nation's tax burden.
So now the poor and people who run up large debts are bad as well?
Posted by: Boniface | July 07, 2009 at 11:17 AM
Yeah I know what are saying,(10:53) the old what if!!!
I knew I had been hearing the fringe pundits saying much about the left and anti-constitution and now i know why.
In roveian style it's the old "blame them while we are doing it" page right out of the manual of dishonest politicking!
Posted by: Say NO to any extremistsn and constitution haters and revisionist | July 07, 2009 at 11:19 AM
Yeah,I'd like to add, until the growth bill and workman compensation bill I was a Crist backer.
He did the same right turn when he was loving on Mccain too,I should have known.

Why on earth does Rubio need two homes? One in Miami and one in Tallahassee? This does not speak well of his money management skills. Doesn't he know he can get a state airplane to ferry him back and forth from his home in Miami whenever he needs it? Sheesh. The nerve of this guy.
Posted by: Buzzard. | July 07, 2009 at 11:37 AM
Steve: Be more specific in your debt assertions. Those may be for the two houses. Politicians from both parties are liely to have two homes and yes, their likley to be pretty nice ones, too. I see nothing out of the ordinary on Rubio's professional life nor his compensation.
Clearly most of the commentors and posters are Democrats, so I'll assume you are applying Saul Alinsky's Rules 4 and 5: "Make the live up to their own book of rules" and "Ridicule is a man's most potent weapon"
Funny, these seems to be at work in the Ray Sansom affair.
At any rate, if you Democrats stay true to form, you'll continue to go after Rubio. It's because you fear him more than you do Crist.

The Norquista is busy today! References to Alinsky are a dead giveaway. And the hypocrisy.

I should be used to it by now, but it never ceases to amaze me how angry and bitter you lefties are. Get a grip. You control the presidency, the Congress, the courts, the administrative state, and yet you still can't get past your petty hatred of anybody conservative. It must be sad to be some of you. I can't imagine the lives you lead that make you so angry and bitter.
Posted by: KilroyFSU | July 07, 2009 at 12:02 PM
Gotta hand to you Dems. You sure are better at name calling. But what are you left with when you are unable to argue facts? Tricky things, facts. Need em' bad if you are going to claim hypocricy.
Posted by: Coach | July 07, 2009 at 12:07 PM
And by the way, name calling applies to Alinsky # 5 that which deals with ridicule.
Posted by: Coach | July 07, 2009 at 12:10 PM
Poor Coach - your failed policies are all the arguement we need. Wake up, Coach, you're 0 and 27 and your team needs someone new.

I Think you may be intentionally pretending to not understand,Rubio should be wealthy,he is a $300k a year attorney! He is a Bush Republican, they leverage every dime,it's business as usual for them.
"So wait, I'm confused. He's not wealthy...so that makes him bad?

Marco really should distance himself from guys like Bovo and Marin.
It's an incestuous web that's for sure and one Crist will exploit.
Bet hey, that's how they do things in Hialeah!
They don't call it a third world country for nothing!
Anyone want some bananas?

What's his real worth?
How much is stashed away in safes and safe deposit boxes belonging to family and close friends?
Posted by: how 'bout them repiggies | July 07, 2009 at 01:12 PM
12:48,
Since you define someone who makes $300K a year as one who should be wealthy, at what income level would someone not be wealthy?

01:12 - Good morning pig!

How's your Sarah Palin fan club coming along?
Do you have to help the dummies with signing the application?

He has more than three times my annual income, three times my total debt and 1% of my net worth. We are the same age. If the report is remotely true, he is living far beyond his means with almost nothing to show for his efforts.
Of course, Charlie is an old man who has never owned real property in the State that he is supposed to govern. Go figure.
Posted by: * | July 07, 2009 at 02:21 PM
That's better. Platitudes are a step up from name calling, but still a little short on facts. I know facts often remain tricky at times for you. Which failed policies specifically are you speaking to?
Posted by: Coach | July 07, 2009 at 04:12 PM
Wealth or lack there of seems to be a topic today. When's the last time you heard about a politician who was broke? They're all rich and seems to get richer when they get to public office. I don't know what can be done about this except for term limits. I was against term limits when Gingrich floated it out there in the 90's as I felt it was up to the electorate to police everything and that terma limits would get rid of the bad and the good. I'm over this now as McCain-Feingold only strengthened incumbents. Public service is a priveldedge and not a way to get rich.

2:17 - he was being sarcastic.
Interesting that he has $900k debt on two homes, but only 8k of assets. His houses have to be worth something, Must be the 8k is net of house mortgage and house value. Not real clear, but probably just my confusion.
