The BLUE DRESS
Last night at the Democratic National Convention Michelle Obama spoke eloquently of a family who has fought hard for the American Dream. I just wish she'd tried a little harder for a better dress.
The BLUE DRESS.
Didn't the Democrats have a problem with this before?
I'm not a fan of Michelle's fashion choice last night (as I type this I look around to make sure a slap isn't coming my way)...there are gags of people who adore her style and I am usually among them.
But not this time. The turquoise number she wore last night was wool and therefore had a bulk that made it look more like a sweat shirt than tailored dress. I hear Michelle stuck with the mastermind designer behind the goddess of a dress she wore the night Barack Obama clinched the nomination.
That dress was a vision. The color and fit were great for Michelle Obama's 5'11 frame and almond brown skin.
But back to the BLUE DRESS...as Michelle Obama talked about blue collar values, I couldn't help but think her voice was being piped through that big broach attached to the front of her collar. I know last night was about painting a softer, gentler Michelle Obama, but all I could think was at any minute the combination of those hot lights and that wool dress is going to make this woman blow!
For what it's worth, I still enjoy that Michelle Obama is about simplicity. And she totally gets age and height appropriate length. She's classy. And for that, I can live with a fashion faux pas here and there.
So what did you think of her fashion choice?

That dress was horrible. The color I could have dealt with, but it was thick and frumpy. Whether or not she is in Denver, most of the rest of us are sweltering and she made me feel hot just looking at her. And that pin made the whole thing look cheap. Michelle might be one of the most gorgeous women to take over the national political spotlight. She deserves to look as fabulous as she is and pandering to the Kohls and Hects mall set with "down to earth" looks aren't doing it for us who can see her potential to be a fashion icon. The first lady isn't required to do much more than look appropriately matched to the president, but if we are going to elect the partner of someone young and hip, let's look the part! Her dress tonight was even worse!

Hey, Dr_Dug, crawl back under your rock. Nobody can vote for her; she's not on the ballot. But she would make a better candidate than John McBush. Regarding your other demonstration of ignorance, the president certainly does make policy starting with the budget, deciding which laws to enforce and which laws to ignore, deciding which foreign countries to send troops for, and on and on.

Hated that dress. Frumpy frumpy frumpy and cheap-looking, and the brooch was just awful. It made her look bulkier than she actually is. I agree, the purple was a thousand times better.

What was wrong with Mrs. Obama's dress!? It has been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This beholder thinks that Mrs. Obama's dress was absolutely beautiful. Even more beautiful was Mrs. Obama herself! Do you have proof that something was wrong with the way she looked as she made her speech last Monday night at the Democratic National Convention? If you don't just shut up and let those of us who admire her keep on doing so!

What are you people thinking the dress dind't even fit her right ... it was bagy and did nothing for her! but thats okay because she will never be our first lady anyway....get reall AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!it is not going to happen.....

I REAL DIDN'T CARE FOR THE COLOR OF HER DRESS. WHAT I REALLY NOTICE WHERE HER LITTLE GIRLS. THE TEN YEAR OLD WAS UNDER DRESSED. LOOK LIKE TO ME THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN GIRLY COLORS OR MAYBE BRIGHTER COLORS. ANY WAYS THAT'S JUST ME.

Grief! The woman wasn't a movie star accepting an Oscar. Michelle Obama is an educated woman who has had serious jobs and who is now trying to fit into the role of the "little woman" behind the man, who we all hope will be sitting in the Oval Office next January. She looked fine. I don't know if her dress was a cotton knit or a tropical weight wool. I do know that the best quality tropical weight wool gabardine is as cool as a cotton knit, but it absolutely won't wrinkle. Which is imperative when you are standing before millions of people. Any wrinkle lines from sitting smooth themselves out when you stand, but more important, she gave a good speech. She introduced America to her roots, her family. Please, please don't spend the next eight years focused on what she wears. I no longer noticed what she was wearing once she started speaking. She delivered a powerful speech.

Nor will poor poor spelling or name calling work. Lord knows I don't want the DAR to revoke my membership for posting here. I believe someone meant "you're" rather then "your". That meager public school education coming through once again.

Dress went with her sleek hair. I liked it. I did think it was a cotton knit, though, not wool. Wool is amazing, isn't it?
Anyhoo, The whole family is A-OK with me. Not scary and weird like some of the white folks that have been parading before us the last 20 some years.

Michelle Obama's big toe is more intelligent than W and Laura Bush combined.
And blogger Nicole--you're the one who made the Dem slam by referring to the "other blue dress" so don't get your panties in a wad and act innocent when someone calls you on it. Your comment had nothing to do with fashion.
Posted by: Chad | August 26, 2008 at 09:22 PM
O my dears, swear words in your blog posts will NEVER be in fashion.
Posted by: Pink Chocolate | August 26, 2008 at 09:19 PM
I was so distracted by her bra strap that I couldn't focus on her speech. Hated the dress and the fit.
Posted by: Ann | August 26, 2008 at 08:27 PM
I don't like her, don't trust her, can't stand her and she shouldn't even be compared to Jackie Kennedy's big toe. Dream on Michelle you will NEVER be Jackie Kennedy!

The turqoise color of the dress was not harmonious against the blue background of the stage. She would have looked good in red. Oh, and how about her cookie recipe?

I am so tired of reading comments from people who constantly blame their government and leaders for their own plight. The world is on a cycle - stock or housing markets go up and down, recessions happen soon followed by thriving times again. Your individual sucess is due to YOURSELF, not the government. This is the best country on the EARTH. Republicans and democrats have different ideaologies, simply stated. They can help guide the country through the normal cycle, but they don't dictate whether an individual will be successful. YOU DO THAT. Moreover --- How many of you complainers voted today or through early voting? I researched my choices, left work early today, voted, and then watched the news only to hear that voting turnout was dismal. You folks who complain about our country had better have voted today, or you have lost your RIGHT. Take responsibility for your own sucess!!!!
I will vote McCain, but the dress on Michele looked pretty, but who cares? She felt good in it, I imagine.

Michelle Obama gave an intelligent and inspirational speech last night and frankly, I could care less about the color and fabric of her dress. How unfortunate that women in public life are still judged by superficial fashion criteria.
We need to elect Barack Obama to undue almost eight years of terrible damage to our democracy at the hands of Republicans who have shown nothing but contempt for the Bill of Rights and the rule of law.
That is what is important.

Our Country is in trouble because the Democraps are in charge of Congress. And everyone knows that its Congress that makes the Laws...oh yea...the Democraps took a five week vacation while you idiots sit around and wait for handouts. How does it feel to sit there and watch the rich party in Denver during their vacation after working only 32 days in Congress this year.
They get gauranteed healthcare, pensions, pay raises and vacations...while you get NOTHING. Ah...the life of a Democrap....must be nice!
Posted by: Truth & Fact | August 26, 2008 at 03:39 PM
Ltaylor..please.
She's smart, an awesome Wife & Mother...how do you know?
And the statement "we should not focus on the outward appearance, but what's coming from the heart."...you mean like John Edwards?
Posted by: Clear choice | August 26, 2008 at 03:32 PM
And Ann...what did she say that was important? Talking about their life and family? Is that how you vote? Your an AssClown and the reason women weren't allowed to vote for decades....stupidity!!
Posted by: Dr_Dug | August 26, 2008 at 03:27 PM
Come on Albert ....thats the problem all the Democraps have....
Without knowledge of anything else....you said you'd vote for her. What a stupid thing to say. Its voters like you that screw things up! Voting blindly. I'm sure you voted for Kerry/Edwards too...you AssClown!
Posted by: Dr_Dug | August 26, 2008 at 03:24 PM
Her speech was ridiculous. Same as the last 35 years....oh yea....they have a V.P. thats been in office that long. If you liked the speech so much...then vote for the speech writer that wrote it for her. Obviously the Democraps think words are better than action! Just look at what a Democrap Congress has done lately...
Posted by: Dr_Dug | August 26, 2008 at 03:20 PM
HeyPink Chocolate....your an idiot! The president doesn't make laws or policy...it's the job of Congress! So instead of begging for healthcare and "handouts", why don't you complain to your Congressman....you know....the people in Washington that took a five week vacation BEFORE the convention. And yes...the Democraps control Congress....
So quit blaming a Republicans....blame the Democraps...the group of AssClowns that continue to fight for power instead of fighting for useless people like you!
After all, their rich and having a party in Denver while you sit at home and complain!

Please change your name from DIVA, clearly you do not think as a DIVA. Michelle represented all the DIVA's last night. Her speech was awesome as well as her appearance.
Posted by: keekee | August 26, 2008 at 02:23 PM
I thought she looked gorgeous...and besides that what she said was awesome; that's what is really important!
Posted by: Ann Scott | August 26, 2008 at 02:22 PM
After her speech I was ready to vote for HER. She would look good wearing a burlap bag.
Posted by: Albert | August 26, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Hey guys, don't you just love America -- a place where we're free to voice our opinions on just about anything from politics to the economy, and yes, even fashion! The post on Michelle Obama's dress had nothing to do with her husband's ability to run the country or whether or not her fashion choice should have any bearing on your vote. Because frankly it shouldn't and besides those aren't things I'd get into on a FASHION BLOG.

you all crack me up.. this is a women who for the first time in her life is proud to be an american!!! i was born proud!!

She wants to be taken seriously - she needs to dress accordingly - that's just how it goes...
Posted by: Shonster | August 26, 2008 at 01:47 PM
Who cares about her dress. The girl is BADDD....She's smart, an awesome Wife & Mother. She has her values in line. Get real we should not focus on the outward appearance, but what's coming from the heart. The truth of the matter is she could spend lots of money on clothes to look fly, but that isn't her main objective. Maybe you should change your view
Posted by: Ltaylor | August 26, 2008 at 01:39 PM
You my dear might want to take a lesson. Michelle will become a style icon. In todays Times she looked relaxed, beautiful, and genuine watching her daughter blow a kiss. She looks very comfortablle in her skin let alone the amazing dress. She looks good in anything. When they start selling knockoffs, you should buy one.
Posted by: bruno | August 26, 2008 at 01:31 PM
Monica's dress was navy blue. Michelle's dress was turquoise - one of my favorite colors for summer apparel. I saw a photo of her in a hideous green number that looked like a garbage bag. But her sense of fashion won't affect my voting preference either way. I planned to vote for her husband long before she wore the turquoise dress.
Posted by: kitty | August 26, 2008 at 01:24 PM
Hey, Remember we are voting for Obama and McCain. Not Michelle Obama and her desperate attempt to regain the women Obama lost when he didn't pick Hillary.
Posted by: Robert | August 26, 2008 at 12:56 PM
I didn't pay attention to her dress. I paid attention to many ways she expressed herself and I must say I'm very very impressed.

Maybe some of you should recheck the name of the blog you are reading. Then you might understand what a blue dress has to do with it. Want real political issues go read the The Buzz!

True, fashion choices are trivial in the greater scheme of things, but image is hugely important in elections, and I think Michelle hit it out of the park with the dress, and the 'do. She looked like Laura Petrie on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" -- smart, warm, sexy, classy (not to mention evoking a classic American family). And as for the wool -- she's in Denver. Temps are 70s in daytime, 50s at night. She'd be warm under the stage lights, yes, but no warmer than all those men in suits.

I loved her dress. The color was great on her and she looked amazing. I do think this column was about as stupid as the people who won't vote for Barack
because he doesn't wear a flag pin on his lapel. Healthcare, groceries and gas prices don't seem to matter to them.
Priorities I guess.
Posted by: Kara | August 26, 2008 at 11:49 AM
I liked the dress, but how does the presidential election and the future of our country depend on one woman's fashion choices? Could we be more shallow?
Posted by: Val | August 26, 2008 at 11:42 AM
You don't like her dress? Who asked you?!
Posted by: Dave | August 26, 2008 at 11:37 AM
Oh the Democrats and the "BLUE DRESS PROBLEM" as you like to put it in bold, capital letters. Look at it this way, Clinton ruined a dress, Bush ruined a nation. As a mother stuggling to overcome the ruination of the Middle Class by 8 years of Republican rule I could really care less what Michelle, or for that matter any Democratic woman, is wearing. Get me some decent health care, great public schools and bring our troops home. The rest is dross.
