Live from Fashion Week: Clothing crisis!

Bcbgfashionweek_2Today officially kicks off New York Fashion Week! A plethora of designers, including Diane Von Furstenberg, Betsy Johnson, Michael Kors, Anna Sui and BCBG Max Azria (pictured left, from today's show) will cram into tents and trot out their spring 2009 collections. In no time, you will see this stuff mimicked on $12.99 racks at Forever 21. It's big, people!

Our friend Jessica Hartman (pictured below), who works as a mild-mannered web editor at the St. Petersburg Times/tampabay.com, landed a sweet Fashion Week internship with IMG. She's a noob in New York, tracking the experience of a lifetime. We're lame in Tampa, reposting what she writes.

Today's installment: OH GOD, WHAT DO I WEAR???  Take it away, Jess.

~ Deal Diva Stephanie

JessicaI'm about to run out the door to my first day of work at the Daily (the magazine for IMG). I tell ya, it wasn't easy picking out an outfit, and I'm still not sold on what I'm wearing.

I initially thought I'd be sort of fashion forward and wear black slacks with a grey pinstripe vest over a white button-down shirt. Well, I looked like a marshmallow, so that was out. So I went to what I'm comfortable with: black slacks with a plum half-armed sweater over a white cami. I know, not groundbreaking, but at least it's not ugly. I'm also wearing my black boots because my damn slacks are still too long. Don't worry, I put Dr. Scholl's inserts in them and am armed with band-aids and flip flops in my purse. We'll see.

Anyway, I gotta run. I still have no idea what I'll be doing today or how long I'll be there, but either way it should be fun! Now hopefully I get on the right train...

Oh thats nothing! I can do that! Simple! And its a good excuse to go buy some new heels :) yay! I saw that it asked for a shirt size...do we get one for participating?

Stephanie Hayes

1K. That's like six-tenth's of a mile. Super short. And you can always wear a wedge!

Ha ha! How far is it actually?? Ive never been good at wearing heels for a long time. I always end up walking barefoot at work when I wear heels. ha.

Stephanie Hayes

Excellent news, Starfish!! Take your time registering, there's still two weeks. And be sure to start stretching!

Stephanie Hayes came out of the womb wearing high heels. While other kids were reciting multiplication tables, she was learning to calculate an extra third off the half-price discount during buy-one-get-one week. She loves animal prints, black mascara and anything that sparkles. She objects to visible panty lines, Crocs and anything that costs more than a car payment. And she doesn't drive a nice car. She can be reached at (727) 893-8857 or shayes@sptimes.com.

Since she was a little girl Nicole Hutcheson dreamed of dressing like a Vogue cover girl. But her reality was more JCPenney catalog. The fact only honed her better ability to find luxury for less. Always on the hunt for markdowns on designer labels, this Deal Diva’s weaknesses are good jeans and killer heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8828 or nhutcheson@sptimes.com.

Colleen Jenkins learned two invaluable shopping tenets from her mom: 1. Buy quality. 2. Get it on sale. Then she added one of her own: Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! This Deal Diva’s idea of a blissful Saturday includes a trip to the Ellenton outlet mall. She loves mixing classic with trendy and cheap Target accessories with her markdown Banana Republic duds. She can be reached at (813) 226-3337 or cjenkins@sptimes.com.

A disciple of the little black dress classics school, Letitia Stein stretches her budget by looking for styles with staying power. She lives for 80 percent off shoes at DSW, floral sundresses and bohemian chic tops. She confesses to being a bit of a snob when it comes to handbags and jewelry. She can be reached at (813) 226-3400 or lstein@sptimes.com.
Dalia Colon once bought a $200 jacket for $8. In an effort to reach a treaty in the war between fashion and function, she occasionally wears pajama pieces work, accessorizes like nobody's business and passes them off as real clothing. A DIY Diva, if she can't find what she wants in a store, she'll knit, bead or hot-glue it herself. She can be reached at (813) 225-3112 or dcolon@sptimes.com.
