Quote of the Day: Imelda Marcos

Imelda

“I did not have 3,000 pairs of shoes. I had 1,060.”

-- Imelda Marcos, shoe queen. In this AP shot from 2006, she holds one of her many shoes while standing with her grandson. Wonder if she ever got any of them on sale?

Because she is such a polarizing figure, the way Mrs. Marcos celebrated her birthday (or any celebration of hers, for that matter) enraged her detractors. Remember the old adage which goes something like — “the best revenge is to live well”? Well folks…… she’s living well at the age of 80 — (a) she’s in the pink of health, (b) she looks very good for her age, (c) her almost 1,000 cases have all been dismissed save for a handful which don’t seem to be going anywhere, (d) the Philippine Justice Department just decreed that her jewelry collection be returned to her because of a legal blunder committed by state attorneys during Cory Aquino's presidency, (e) her daughter is a congressman and her only son is a popular governor, and (e) despite her tale that she is “impoverished, she is able to live in a duplex Penthouse overlooking the Manila Golf Club and the Polo Club, and is a fixture at lavish parties whisked around in her BMW 7-Series limousine.

And her enemies? Gnashing their teeth and shouting that she should be put in jail and burned at the stake. After all the sh*t that she’s been through and after all the sh*t thrown at her, whether or not it is an act of revenge on her part and whether or not it is justified under karmic law, NOBODY can dispute the fact that IMELDA IS LIVING HER LIFE WELL (and all these while Cory Aquino is on her death bed fighting colon cancer).

And we all just have to live with that fact. A lot of us may not be able to grin about this, but everyone just has to bear with it.

Kind'a like when Central America's biggest "commie" - Daniel Ortega would buy $500 sunglasses during he and his wife's shopping sprees to New York.
Leftist chic, payed-for by the poor.

2006? That necktie looks like 1986. Bet you he's wearing stone washed jeans.

Stephanie Hayes came out of the womb wearing high heels. While other kids were reciting multiplication tables, she was learning to calculate an extra third off the half-price discount during buy-one-get-one week. She loves animal prints, black mascara and anything that sparkles. She objects to visible panty lines, Crocs and anything that costs more than a car payment. And she doesn't drive a nice car. She can be reached at (727) 893-8857 or shayes@sptimes.com.

Since she was a little girl Nicole Hutcheson dreamed of dressing like a Vogue cover girl. But her reality was more JCPenney catalog. The fact only honed her better ability to find luxury for less. Always on the hunt for markdowns on designer labels, this Deal Diva’s weaknesses are good jeans and killer heels. She can be reached at (727) 893-8828 or nhutcheson@sptimes.com.

Colleen Jenkins learned two invaluable shopping tenets from her mom: 1. Buy quality. 2. Get it on sale. Then she added one of her own: Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! This Deal Diva’s idea of a blissful Saturday includes a trip to the Ellenton outlet mall. She loves mixing classic with trendy and cheap Target accessories with her markdown Banana Republic duds. She can be reached at (813) 226-3337 or cjenkins@sptimes.com.

A disciple of the little black dress classics school, Letitia Stein stretches her budget by looking for styles with staying power. She lives for 80 percent off shoes at DSW, floral sundresses and bohemian chic tops. She confesses to being a bit of a snob when it comes to handbags and jewelry. She can be reached at (813) 226-3400 or lstein@sptimes.com.
Dalia Colon once bought a $200 jacket for $8. In an effort to reach a treaty in the war between fashion and function, she occasionally wears pajama pieces work, accessorizes like nobody's business and passes them off as real clothing. A DIY Diva, if she can't find what she wants in a store, she'll knit, bead or hot-glue it herself. She can be reached at (813) 225-3112 or dcolon@sptimes.com.
