Ethanol in Peru

A stretch of desert in northwest Peru could soon be generating ethanol, reports the LA Times.

Mapler Dallas energy firm Maple Cos. plans to invest $120 million to build an ethanol plant using sugar cane planted on 25,000 acres near the city of Piura. The company also plans to build a mile-long underwater pipeline to the Pacific Ocean to deliver fuel to tankers and onward to U.S. customers.

The project hopes to directly or indirectly create 3,200 jobs. If all goes well the plant will export 30-40 million gallons of ethanol a year by 2010, perhaps growing to 100 million in the future.

ethanol junkie

Sugarcane ethanol is nothing new... It has been a major player in Brazil for years when it comes to making ethanol. Corn based ethanol is probably more widely known but it produces less energy and is more expensive.
