Tampa Electric asks to increase rates

Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas today announced today plans to increase monthly bills for their customers. The average Tampa Electric residential bill would increase 9 to 10 percent, and the average Peoples Gas bill would increase 10 percent, the utilities said.

The utilities, both subsidiaries of Tampa-based TECO Energy, told the Public Service Commission today that it plans to seek the base rate increase. The utility has 60 days to provide more information.

A decision could take eight months, said spokesman Rick Morera. Both utilities anticipate the rate increases would take effect in May 2009.

Check back for more details.
