GM investing in new 46-miles-per-gallon compact Chevy Cruze
G.M. announced Thursday that it would spend $500 million on its Lordstown, Ohio factory where it plans to build a new compact car, the Chevrolet Cruze.
G.M.’s chief executive, Rick Wagoner, says the Cruze marks its move away from the production of big trucks and SUVs. The company recently announced it is closing four truck plants in the U.S. due to falling demand for gas guzzlers.
“We hope we can see some opportunities in pricing for the car,” he said after unveiling the Chevy Cruze. “With fuel prices higher, I think people’s value equation is changing so the opportunity to get a more balanced profit portfolio, large vehicle to small vehicle, is going to arise in the U.S. and be more like it is in the rest of the world.”
GM says the Cruze will get 46 miles to the gallon, 9 more than the Chevy Cobalt, which it will replace. Production will start in 2010.
