St. Pete mayoral race added to anti-Trump backlash

RECOMMENDED READING

Democrats are upbeat this morning following a series of election wins across the country, including the St. Petersburg mayoral contest that is officially nonpartisan but saw President Trump play prominently.

“Today is a good day for St. Petersburg. I want to congratulate Mayor Kriseman on his re-election, and I want to recognize the incredible work of the Florida Democratic Party and countless grassroots organizers who helped lead Rick to victory,” DNC Chairman Tom Perez said.

“I’m confident that Mayor Kriseman will continue to move his city forward and give residents of St. Pete the leadership they deserve. The DNC was proud to invest in this re-election race, and we will continue fighting to elect mayors like Rick who will expand opportunity and build an economy that works for all.”

Kriseman and his allies — including state and national Democrats — sought to portray former mayor Rick Baker as a Trump ally. Critics said it was unfair as Baker never embraced Trumpism but the ad campaign was effective.

Kriseman had other factors in his favor, including a city that has gotten more progressive.
