What are you doing to cut corners?

FoodcostsSigns of the times: Allrecipes.com reports that more people have been searching for recipes using tilapia, rice, bread, potatoes since January. Also, casseroles have become popular again, and ground beef is getting searched more than steak. (Of course with the recent spike in rice prices, that particular search may have slacked off.)

Plus, page views for “make at home” versions of restaurant pizza and Chinese and Indian food increased 79 percent over the same three months last year.

Looks like lots of people are struggling with high food prices.

I've been thinking that I should start making my own bread.

What are you doing to cope with rising food prices? Eating out less; making your own coffee; trading whole wheat bread for generic white because it's cheaper? Or are you cutting other expenses (cable, movies, recreational shopping) to make sure the family gets fed? Do good habits (and good food) go out the window when food prices rise?

Please share your thoughts and ideas. They might help someone else.

Marinate & grill cheap meats; thin slice or chop in processor, throw in casseroles. I buy loss-leader items in produce stands. Make own iced tea (less milk). Impossible to keep up healthy eating; buying more processed foods, usually don't. Already cut budget to the bone since insurance hikes. Next step: Vote out all incumbents

I stopped eating... I lost 25 pounds so my health care costs should be lower also. I planted some vegetables in my yard so hopefully in a few weeks I will have something to eat. If not, I might join those garbage jumpers.

Only eating out once a week. Take lunch to work. Take my own coffee to work. Buy meat in bulk on sale and freeze. Buy anything we use on sale in multiples. Get into that habit and you never pay full price.

I eat protien bars and peanut butter on a daily basis with lots of water. I spend money on my children first and I eat the bare minimum. I used the last 20 dollars I had to put gas in my car until I get paid~! Gotta love the economy these days....

I got 2 more jobs, so now I work 16 hours a day and still have a hard time making ends meet.

I'm buying less fresh fruit and vegetables at a time to avoid losing money by having it spoil before I eat it. I'm also eating lettuce that has begun to turn brown on the edges instead of pitching it, but part of that is because I'm also going to the store less frequently to save gas. I also make sure I freeze bread to keep it fresh to avoid wasting it.

Can anybody suggest a recipe for hardtack and cornpone? Please, keep it under two bits (must serve 2 and provide left overs).

Stopped buying pop and expensive juices. Drinking more tea and water.

Eating more potatoes, carrotts, turnips, cabbage, instead of the more expensive vegetables.
