Feaster slams Capitals coach Boudreau
Lightning general manager Jay Feaster had some pointed words for Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau, who has maintained that his player's hit on Vinny Lecavalier was a mistake in that Matt Cooke was going after puck-carrier Michel Ouellet before Lecavalier got in the way.
The hit resulted in a dislocated right shoulder for Lecavalier, who will have surgery in the next week or so and then be out for 12 to 15 weeks while rehabbing. Lecavalier is expected to be ready for training camp.
Cooke was fined $2,500 by the league for the hit that the league acknowledged should have at least garnered an interference call.
"Every time I read Bruce Boudreau's comments that Vinny just happened to step in front of a train,'' Feaster said. "First that's what it was because (Lecavalier) wasn't looking. Then it was he didn't see him coming. I think he embarrasses himself every time he opens his mouth about the subject. I think they should be happy Matt Cooke is in the lineup tonight, it's only a $2,500 fine.
Feaster continued: "I just wonder how different the reaction might have been if we substitute (Nick Tarnasky) for (Cooke) and then substituted (Alex Ovechkin) for (Lecavalier), and it was Ovechkin getting hit and being out for the next 12 to 15 weeks as opposed to Vinny. I wonder if it would have been one of those happenstance type of things."
There was more.
"This is a northing from their perspective,'' Feaster said. "I wonder if that's what it would have been if it had been Tarns hitting Ovechkin and Ovi being out 12 to 15 weeks. Might have been the end of the world.''
Never a dull moment.

Gee, matt, I guess I'm not an idiot because I am not advocating trading Vinny per ce. However, since he won't re-sign I would rather get players for him than NOTHING. Now, who's the idiot???

Gang, we could stockpile the All-Star game Defensemen in our sweater. It will do no good because they are players, not coaches. 'Too close to the forrest to see the trees', ring a bell?
We have had for some time now, a dire, desperate need for a true defensive coach. Keeping Tortorella and replacing Sullivan with Tool Man or Clyde ain't going to hack it. As much as I'd love to see Andreychuk training to wear the cheap suit behind the bench, we need a D-coach, and I mean today!
Robinson, Potvin, anybody teaching it so well in the Detroit, Anaheim, Dallas, and San Jose systems. Get somebody here the *firetruck* now! [Or, as soon as available when their respective post-season ends.]
Where's Ted?

Bang on Ajax and why if the Bolts win the Crosby Lite lottery they should consider trading down one or two spots and get one of the 3 stud d men in the draft and another NHL ready body in the package.

Bobby the Chief said the Lightning aren't that far away from being a good team(today's Times) I have also heard him more than once say this year's team is much more talented than the previous two years. I have also had him tell me the D is taught to keep the forwards wide(versus meeting them at the blue line) If ya dissect the comments just a bit, maybe Bobby the Chief is ever so gently saying that Torts is the reason. He likes the talent, he questions the system. I might add I have heard Chief say it a zillion times. "You have to stop going backwards backwards backwards." Another zillion time, "they just give the forwards to much room entering the offensive zone" Calling all Teds, where is Ted, anyone know where Ted is?? You see the turn around with the same players, that Washington did and I think anyone, almost anyone, would question coaching, not only the system, but the loss of player confidence in the present coach. The only guys that weren't in the dreaded "doghouse" are all the 30 year old grinders that NO ONE WANTS. I for one want them to draft some bigger D. I for one would except a VL4 trade for some rockem sockem D. Watching VL4 get 200 points the last two years and Marty get 175 points, and watch the other team get 3 or 4 a night is no fun for me. And after about 8 goalies that all are horrible, maybe (tongue fimly in cheek) it isn't really all of these goalies that just happen to fail here. By the way, if we get a bunch of D who can win some battles it won't help if the system isn't one that can do something other than rap the puck around the board to a stationary forward. Watch Buffalo and Detroit and yes Montreal and see how often they take the puck straight up the middle of the ice. Short quick passes and even the D skating with the forwards!!! Wow REVOLUTIONARY That is absolutely missing in our hockey team and it is the reason we get about 3 odd man rushes a year. No system going forward, no confidence in the players you have, to win a battle or hold the puck a tenth of a second longer to have the play open up, just wrap wrap warp. Ted is that you???

Then I guess by your self definition that makes you the brilliant pobah here Matt.
Great inciteful clarity on the Bolts possible Torterella contract savings professor.

JR, if you think trading Vinny is the way to go, you are truely an idiot. No I don't think like Feaster, I would be eating right now instead of typing. The only person in this organization that would want Vinny gone is Torts. He hates having players who have more respect in the locker room than himself. see DaveA. He is a ego maniac and need to go ASAP. Screw the fact he was chosen to coach the US team. Its not Lightnings fault Waddell chose such a bum to run the US team. Good luck in ATL next season Torts.. No doubt in my mind Waddell will do everything in his power to try to snag Torts as his next head coach. And I hope he is 100% successful. (That way the Bolts would only be on the hook for the difference in salary if their is any and might be able to get a draft pick as compansation)

That's sounds good to me, bingo.
"Hammered", pd? Do YOU have those pictures of Mars? I'd love to see'em. A .500 record, pd. Certainly commendable against US but hardly a hammering.
However!,
I was not referring to game-record but to DRAFT-record. And in that aspect, Toranna doesn't come up to MTL's heel.
Yay or nay?

Not taking an adverse pos. Bingo, but why do they allow Phaneuff to run amok out West then? Bring Vlad along, pronto.
I know, I know, we're the Lightning and refs hate us; whenever Artyhukin got near anybody, the Zebras inhaled to ready themselves for blowing the whistle.
Well, these pukes have to be treated like the children they are acting. "If you're going to cry, I'll give you something to cry about"; might give a taste of our dissatisfaction with officiating. If they're going to see us as an opportunity to falsetto the night away, I think we should give them a reason.
We should drop, literally just slam to the ice, everything that moves near that puck or especially our blue line. Going near our crease should cause loose teeth cavity fillings and an invitation to come back for more. Watch how things change then...Yup, we'll play shorthanded a lot but we'll hang with any Club from the Western Conf., therefore not many in the East could hang with us.
Sorry, got off on an 'Old School' fog there...
Yo Ted, what was it you said?

Leo it would be mihalik (sp).. 6.6 250 defence man. I understand refs don't like him because when he hits they don't get up. Watch out cook you stew is about to be mixed.

Lightning have a better chance than any individual team of getting No. 1 pick but it's still slightly less than 50 percent that they'll get it. The way this season has gone........

Feaster has spoke quite a bit the last few weeks, and he always portrays the stance that the D is pretty much set and now we move on to forwarad lines 2 and 3. Foolish man. As Vinny and Marty will tell ya, it is hard to play offense when you can't get the puck out of the zone without them coming down to the bottom of the faceoff circle to help. Geez, Jay just keeps pumping the PR speeches and ignoring the reality of the situation. But that IS what he is paid to say, isn't it gang.
Posted by: ajax | April 06, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Michael, all real Bolt fans want the team to do well, draft well, sign good free agents and compete nightly.
Hopefully they will be improved next year but lets be real too...current management has not shown since the lockout that they have a handle on stopping or slowing the progressive slide as the team has become worse each year since...They may actually get worse before it gets better (but I hope not)
Posted by: boltflasher | April 06, 2008 at 06:00 PM
I don't know if that'll cut it, Michael. Ramo was good for a week? Great. How about 82 games now?
Winning "nine more games" is easier said than done. I'm sure Carolina wanted to beat the Panthers and the Penguins wanted to beat the Flyers today. But the team in front didn't let'em!
It wasn't hard for Philly to do better than LAST year, Michael. The might've won nine more games than last year but they sure as heck didn't March into the playoffs. They squeezed in by the hair on their chinny-chin-chin. And they won't be there long. Against Ovie and Huey? Buh-bye, Philly.
Tampa has the means to put the puck in the net. Could they use more forward depth? Absolutely. But it's another defenseman (or 2) that's the key now. I think Smith can hold the fort (although his last game...phew..) if he's given space to read the play and not have to push as many defenders as attackers out of his crease to have a chance to make a bloody save. Every night, it's like the morgue in the blue paint. That won't do.
Get your hands on a defensive Robocop, who'll yank anyone gets close to the goalie's head off, pulling him out of there.
That's the now. The truth is,
You need to build through a good draft. Takes years to do that.
Toranna never does that; they wanna fix, fix, fix, always short term.
Look at them now, the sorriest franchise in the world and verily, for years to come.
You don't want that for Tampa, do you?

Posted by: rich | April 06, 2008 at 05:39 PM
The Lightning arnt that far away from fixing things. The reason I brought up the Flyers and how we have won 9 more games than they had to finish last, and I should have realized that I had to spell it out, as most people on here either arnt smart, or just dont take the time to think, is that look at the Flyers now. They are in the playoffs the year after finishing last!!!! I think that if the Flyers lost 9 more games than us last year, and are in the playoffs this year, we can next year. Look at it this way, if we dont get the 1st overall pick, we can trade the pick, and get 3 or 4 good players back. If we do get the 1st overall pick, we will get a GREAT player, and add 2 other forwards, and we are set to go. The defense will be better after a year to learn from, although maybe we should bring in a veteran defenseman, and Ramo is our goalie. He was BRILLANT in the last week or 2 of the season. Really he only had 2 bad games, one against Montreal, and the 3rd period against the Sabers.
Posted by: Michael | April 06, 2008 at 05:26 PM
Our failure is complete. I really hope Feaster doesn't believe a couple acquisitions is going to fix this mess. But he does believe that, doesn't he? We'll finish 20th or higher next year, Feaster will be fired along with Torts, and the rebuilding will begin a year later than when it shoud: right now. Maybe we'll be back in the playoffs in 5-8 years -- probably the same time we finally acquire a #1 goalie.

How to Sweeten a Putrifying Asset
by Ron Campbell
1. Boost revenue by increasing ticket prices.
2. Shed payroll expenses by dumping the team's (arguably) second best player.
3. Retain an incompetent General Manager and intemperate, inflexible Coach because to do otherwise would increase expenses.
Of course, since the "definitive purchase agreement" was signed in December:
1. Two large condominium projects in Channelside have declared bankruptcy and another is about to do so, thus further eroding the value of the land included in the non-deal.
2. The Lightning finished 30th in a 30-team league.
3. The team's star has gone down with an injury that requires off-season surgery and it's very likely he won't re-up in anything remotely representing the current situation.
4. Long-time fans are rebelling against the direction ownership is taking with many asserting they won't renew their season ticket packages.

Of course I was referring to Huet.
But the child can't imposter me anymore so he's back to doing what he does best: getting his posts erased.
As if this blog's requirement is to sling insults from under the bed. Like a child. Haw-haw-haw! Let him have his bottle, folks. If he's on my case as much WITHOUT EVER talking hockey, it's because he Fears and Venerates me. He's reduced to base instincts, like a monkey in a tree who throws his crap at passing tigers but dares not climb down among them. Because he's Afraid. Like a child under the bed. Haw-haw-haw! Little child, do you need a hug from mummy? Haw-haw-haw! But honestly? I'm flattered he goes through all that trouble for me...
Moving on,
Huet is playing with burning Pride. "They dumped me for a 20yr old! I'll show them! I'll show EVERYBODY!"
Never underestimate Pride.
Go Huey! I've always praised your "mental-toughness". Now show the world what I mean!

Yeah Olin, I received that Czech. game info as well. It went into the trash just as quick as the season ticket renewal forms when I read how much they were upping my season ticket prices.
Posted by: Herb | April 06, 2008 at 11:29 AM
"Overhyped, unproven goalie"? Nobody even MENTIONED Mike Smith, weezer. I thought leo was referring to Huet, an actual NHL playoff-caliber netminder (not a wannabe winger) whom we could have had for a draft pick and a bag of pucks but couldn't "afford" since his UFA summer will bring him like $4M.
Things that make you go, "Hmmmm...." Colin Campbell says the hit on Vinny should have gotten a "major penalty for interference", which I didn't even know existed and have never seen called in 40 years; then they fine the dope 2500 clams, which is about like ten bucks to you and me, without even a ONE-GAME suspension, for taking out (one of) the best player(s) in the sport with a blatantly illegal hit. The refs have totally forgotten how to call interference--except on puck carriers, inexplicably--but they sure know how to call phantom "hooking" when a stick comes within 18 inches of another player. Boudreau's remark that the hit was clean is pathetically transparent; if it had been one of our guys hitting Alexander the Great, he'd have been soaking his panties with the flowing tears.
Finally, I do agree with everyone who says this team just totally sucks from the ground up. I think you can take ANY NHL TEAM...slice three wrist tendons in their top defenseman, who is the engine of their attack, removing him for the first 60 games...and expect no problems. Also, NO team needs a tough forward skilled at tipping in pucks willing to stand in front of the net all night; so Feaster's signing of Ryan Craig was just another gaffe of his, since he knew he'd be out the entire season with a knee injury. Also, no NHL team needs its captain to skate with the team. In fact, an unending parade of injuries to almost every player on the squad is NO REASON WHATSOEVER to have to fill the roster with AHL players. An owner utterly uninterested in hockey and unwilling to pony up the dough to compete with other owners and put NHL talent out there would never have prevented ANY OTHER team from spending the money that THEY DIDN'T GET on NHL talent anyway. How ridiculous to think it would. Of course, any team should be able to weather the loss of its third-line center as well, a face-off expert who also is big body willing to stand in front of the net. No sane person would expect the team receiving the fewest power-play opportunities in the league to be affected by that in any way either--especially when they're in the top 5 in the league at scoring when they DO have the man advantage--those who know hockey know that's a recipe for winning. Almost everyone on earth concentrates better and performs better at their job when they never know if the company might be sold...so the team being up for sale, then not, then again, then not, the uncertainty, should be something GOOD for players--but not ours. Lastly, the superstar center being tormented by a nagging wrist injury keeping him off the scoreboard for weeks is nothing any NHL team would suffer from. Why would you think it would? That should logically produce more goals and more wins. It's just that the Lightning suck, and it's all Feaster's fault.
Yes, Feaster and Torts have overstayed their welcome and need to say bye-bye to start over fresh (won't happen, BTW) but this team wouldn't be helped by that. They just suck...they let every little thing bother them that would NEVER bother any other NHL team.

Let's see what DOES happen and judge after that, whaddaya say?
I wanna say sumpin' about the Cappers.
They have been on a monumental roll since...
They got Ovie and he certainly deserves the Hart now but another player has "announced his presence with authority"....
They can be considered a true playoff team because they now have....
See where I'm going?
Say, that reminds me,

Posted by: boltflasher | April 06, 2008 at 09:41 AM
That's what it will take t5o be competitive with many C players on the roster and no pipeline, not a prediction of what they will do. You don't keep a UFA that will sign elsewhere and get noting for him. No wonder you defend Feaster. You think just like him. Or is your name Jay?
Posted by: jr | April 06, 2008 at 09:34 AM
Any comments that have the words trade or get rid of Vinny4 are THE dumbest things I have ever heard. You remove the problem and Vinny wouldn't want to go anywhere. Does anyone really think this team is worth anything without Vinny? Seriously, stick to soccer. And what Feaster said was good for the team, albeit a day late. And anyone thinking this team will be close to 50 million next season, needs to stop by my house and share some of that stuff you are smoking.

If they have any sense, PSE will sever the purchase agreement with the penniless uncommitted Koules, lower the asking price to a realistic, marketplace level and seek an enthusiastic buyer with the required financial committment.
They are simply not going to get anyone without a lobotomy to fork over $200 million for something that on its absolutely best day is worth $180M. They need to fire Sal Galioto, the charlatan who couldn't deliver a loan from the company that lists him as a consultant. There are no financial websites reporting Societe Generale not making sports loans. Only references are by a couple of hockey writers who are shills for management. This clown used SG's other woes as a fig leaf for his failure to deliver. I actually believe PSE swallowed his alibi.
The new committed ownership needs to exorcise the inept GM and cancerous coach and get the highest offer for Lecavalier. He's not staying here. They need to spend around $50M in payroll to resurrect the franchise. They need to be patient about the surrounding real estate which may not be productively developed for at least 5 years. This is best tourniquet to stanch defections from a distraught, disheartened, and disgusted fan base.
The new owners should be aware that price increases for ticket packages are not remotely practical, even in a healthy economic environment. Tampa's unemployment trend is one of the worst in the country. It ranks near the top in real estate depreciation. And that doesn't take into account the poor product PSE is trying to peddle.
The St Pete Times can't be counted on the come close to reporting the facts surrounding this abortion of an organization. Too many conflicts of interest. The bloggers have led the way in reporting the shenannigans of ownership, not by days but by weeks and in some cases, months. In other cities with similar situations, at least the fans would have the media as an important ally. Ad space revenue seems more precious in the Bay area.
This blog is regularly monitored by PSE and its lackeys. In their mind, millions of dollars are at stake. Surely they must realize by now they don't have a deal and won't have one until they lower the price to a realistic level. The two or three bloggers that have consistently defended this management (a la Cristodoro's defense of Feaster last week) have revealed themselves. Too bad management didn't put this kind of effort into building a competitive team let alone a contender.

How about fining the refs who screwed the call... or is better officiating not really an NHL priority?
Posted by: David G | April 06, 2008 at 07:10 AM
Nothing like a little self-righteous indignation Jay. Why don't you give Coach Boudreau a body slam and a press. He certainly doesn't approve of what his player did to Vinny, but he is obliged to defend him. As a former journeyman player, he knows the rules. He doesn't trash his players before the press, and he doesn't bench them as punishment. What Cooke did was dead wrong, and you can be sure that Bruce had plenty to say to Matt Cooke in private.
But how could you understand that, Mr. Grandstander. You never played the game, never coached, and you have demonstrated that you know virtually nothing about hockey talent or the way hockey people handle themselves.
You and your psycho puppeteer coach really seem upset at how the Caps ruined the Bolts' season, but maybe you'd rather use that tired injury excuse instead.
Hit the groaning board, Big Round Fella. That's were you can continue to overcompensate for your hapless failure as a General Manager.
How you, with your ridiculous eating disorder, and your wild-eyed little trash-mouth friend, with his Napoleonic complex, survive in this game challenges all that is natural and normal. JUST ROLL, ROLL AWAY! FAR AWAY!

I do believe the cupboard is bare, and I do believe it is compounded by a coach who uses a system that is, well let's say unique. We changed the penalty kill to have the 4 guys stay up more on the blueline and make it harder to get in the zone. Many of you know hockey, and many of you should be embarassed by that statement from out coach. Did his wife pass him a note at dinner? That is how every possession and every shift should be played, hold the blue line. Our revolutionary coach needs some time off, me to. Watched the Ncaa but couldn't help but switch back and forth between the Capitals game(18,500 decked in red) WOW I ENJOY THIS GAME. Can't wait to feel that excitement in Tampa again and hope it is darn rosie soon.

If I'm not senile.
Washington fired their coach this season.
Washington fought up the Southeast ladder to win the conference and get the #3 seed.
The Lightning kept their coach.
The Lightning won last place.
Even if Torts were the 2nd coming of King Clancy, Conn Smythe, Toe Blake and Scotty Bowman all in one his act has still gotten old for this team. It's just the nature of the business that coaches have a shelf-life.

You people should be ashamed of yourseleves. Yes this season has been awful. Yes, Feaster and Torts deserve somne blame. But is it worth turning against your team? NO!! Look at what this team has had to work with this season.
Current owners being to cheap to bring in anything other than minor leaguers. (We were $6 million under the cap)
The team being sold, then the deal falling through, then being re-sold, and now basically on hold now.
Injuries to Ryan Craig, Chris Gratton, Captin Tim Taylor, Brad Lukowhich, Dan Boyle, Paul Ranger, Vinny Lecavilier, Michel Ouelett and Craig MacDonnald.
And the uncertanty of what would happen at the trade deadline. We heard that Marty St.Louis, Vinny Lecavilier, Dan Boyle, Brad Richards, and Chris Gratton were ligit trade options, not to mention Vinny Prospal.
And you guys only look at the bad stuff. Look at the good. Craig MacDonnald was a GREAT find for the 3rd or 4th line, as was Mathieu Darche. Michel Ouelett turned into a pretty good goal producer. Dan Boyle was Re-signed. The Lightning cleared some cap room by moving Brad Richards. They got Jeff Halpern, Jussi Jokenen, and Mike Smith for him and Holmqvist, with the Stars KNOWING that we wanted to move Richards just to cut some money off the books. And look at what the Lightning found in Alex Picard, who they got for Prospal, along with a 3rd round pick, which could escalate into a second round ick if the Flyers make it to the Eastern Confrence Finals, or something like that. This after Prospal said what he said, and wasnt going to be able to be re-signed with the cap issues for next year anyway. And one other thing, yes, I know last place is last place, but the Flyers won 22 games or something like that last season to finish last in the NHL. We won 31. To me, that should also be a sign that thing arnt as bad as people think.
If you guys want to continue slamming Torts and Feaster, go ahead. I think that they have proven that they know what they are doing. Otherwise, how did we win a Stanley Cup with them in charge? If I recall correctly, the Lightning stunk went Torts took over, and look what he did in 2003-2004.

What a fitting way to end the season with a loss. This whole season has been one huge mess. Yes, it's over! Let the summer rebuilding begin! I wish all the injured Bolts a speedy but safe recovery.

...LOL, I receive my letter from Bolt's to travel to CZ for opening nite next season...LOL, LOL. Did they really send that out to glourious season ticket holder's?, after this botch of a season. Good nite General Tort's and Uncle Jay. If I were owner- it would be your last evening associated with the TBL. Please someone step up over the sommer and buy this team and turn it back into a respectable team to watch play.
Damian how about a unethical interview story with V4 regarding his impression's of ownership-management. What would they do if the franchise player point's a finger in their direction???? Fire him as well- might as well- they've done it to 95% of the cup team.

Actually David, I believe we are 30th now. Having the best odds now for the number one overall pick, all we can do is say a couple of hail mary's to the hockey gods we are chosen in the lottery...

Torts is not only a non-motivator, no one wants to play for him. Witness that the Nashvile Tenesean reports that Hlavac has scored 15 points in 17 games and is playing on the Preds top line.

Break out the champagne, we have done it!
Now there is just one thing left to complete the season, losing the #1 pick.
