Lightning: Lecavalier surgery successful

The team announced that Tuesday's arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum in Vinny Lecavalier's right shoulder was successful and a full recovery is expected. The star center, after a 12- to 15-week rehab, is expected to be ready for September's training camp.

The day apparently got off to a much later start than anticipated as noted orthopedist James Andrews was running behind schedule. Lightning assistant trainer Jason Serbus accompanied Lecavalier to Birmingham, Ala., where the surgery was performed at St. Vincent's Hospital. Serbus observed in the operating room.

"It went very well. That's what Jason told me," Lecavalier's father, Yvon, said. "We were a little concerned. Now we're very happy.''

Lecavalier, who turns 28 on Monday, was injured in an April 3 game at Washington on a check by the Capitals' Matt Cooke. The team said Lecavalier's rehab protocol will be determined by Andrews' office and be supervised by the Lightning medical staff.

Arthroscopic surgery on Lecavalier's painful right wrist is expected to be scheduled at a later date.

My pc is not working right, I saw that Price let in 5 goals to that offensive juggernaut, Boston, and I know that must of been a mistake, anyone got the real score? The D must of been really horrible for the annointed one to be so poor, couldn't possibly be his fault!!!!

I read on another blog that the Bolts are looking to bring back R2 (Artukin). We shall see if that happens. I wouldn't have a problem with that as long as they aren't projecting him for one of the top 2 lines.

The dreaded Torts doggie house, I think they have added an addition to it for all the players who seem to be in it. How silly.

I am glad things have gone well with the surgery. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

The injury should never have happened. Both Vinny and Marty went to Tortorella and told them they feel safer when Roy is on the bench: maybe after the first couple of cheap shots, someone would have pounded Cooke and the last hit would never have happened. Tortorella didn't even have OB out there the last few games. Who knows, it may not have made a difference, but obviously, both Vinny and Marty do feel that having an enforcer keeps them safer.

I have been supportive of Tortorella all along, but I honestly think that this was something that could have been prevented.

I am glad to see the Capitals losing after that cheap shot. Funny how now they are whining about Philly being cheap: nothing more than they deserve.

Lecavalier was on the ice playing in a meaningless game because he is a hockey player, and thats what hockey players do.

As Vinny if he should have been on the ice in that game, and see what he says...

As usual, Harvey is right on point. Good to read you again (Wink, wink). I find it especially ironic to post that poignant message under the topic of Vince's surgery.

Given the lowering of the bar around here, that was like someone opened a window and fresh air entered.

Thanks.

Yeah, I know, instigator rule or not, still couldn't believe what I was seeing...

Excellent question boltflasher. I'll give you my answer as to why that didn't happen. It's called the instigator rule.

NY already had a 5 on 3 and to jump on the punk (even when he deserved a beating) would only, by the rules, have extended NJ's pk. Very dangerous in the playoffs and a coaches nightmare. Players want to play and responding spur of the moment could buy them some butt time after they put their team in that position. That's how silly this league has become.

In older days someone would have given the punk a body slam and an ice sandwich. I'd like to see what he had to say for the next 6 weeks while his jaw was wired shut. There is little fear of repercussion for disrespectful antics which won't change until the instigator rule becomes a thing of the past. It limits players as far as policing themselves. If they do, they get 2 extra. If they don't, they can't stop that kind of bs.

I understand the rule in the last 5 minutes of an out of hand game when a coach sends out the goons to send a message for the next game. If it was just that I could live with it but the way the rule is now players face extra time for taking care of business and that is exactly why we have so many little sissies acting like wannabe tough guys. Let them be accountable and that crap stops. Let them know that they will face an @$$ whippin and it stops in a hurry.

Personally, I'm on the Roy side. Don't worry about 2 minutes. Take care of business now instead of tolerating that nonsense for 60.

Tort's (and most coaches) would disagree. I say that until the rule changes, if it ever does, screw the 2 minutes. make your case and take the 2. Your team will be better off in the long run.

Playoff note: did anyone find it odd, that no Devil came back and mopped the ice withe Avery while he was waving his hand and stick in Brodeur's face? or is this the "new" NHL?...can't picture Avery getting away with that very long had Scott Stevens or Ken Daneyko been around...

Tackleberry,
I had the surgery just before the Winter break and was really surprised how quick I bounced back. I was back playing volleyball in 10 to 12 weeks. Maybe sooner, but volleyball is not a contact sport! I had some issues with scar tissue, but that was because of my own fault. But now, my left shoulder (the one the surgery was done on) is much stronger than my right shoulder, which is my dominate side. He should definitely be ready for the training camp. As for his wrist, that I could not really tell you. Hopefully that will be a quick recovery too!

kdr,
How long was the recovery and physical therapy?

How long will the recovery and physical therapy be for V4's wrist surgery?

Dr. Andrews is the best on the east coast for this type of surgery. When I was in college, I had a very similiar surgery to repair my ligament and rotator cuff and Dr. Andrews was present for part of my surgery. At the time it was HealthSouth and walking into the examination rooms to meet with the doctor was cool, they had the hockey room, and the golf room and the football room, etc. The rooms had many player pictures with signatures who had come to get their surgery and treatments there by Dr. Andrews. Glad Vinny came through ok, but I never doubted he would.

...add me to this bandwagon parade of saying bye-bye to the general.

Ditto on my gratitude to the Hockey Gods and Dr. Andrews' hands.

Coach Bill, you'll have to grill Coach Johnny T. as to W.T.F.

I'm saving a special bottle of tonsil varnish to celebrate the announcement Tortorella is gone and there will be no more destruction of goal tenders and better than---better than average stars.

Idiot Tortorella, Lecavalier turns how old? 28 on Monday and the dunce cap behind our bench has crammed 2 extra seasons into VL's body with the asinine minutes played. Add the mental anguish and Vinny is 28 going on 32!

Where the deuce is Ted?!!!?
Where the deuce is Pat Burns?????

Thank God for Vinny's recoverey. QUESTION: What was he doing on the ice that night in a meaningless game?
