Boyle traded to Sharks
Lightning defenseman Dan Boyle was traded Friday, along with defenseman Brad Lukowich, to the Sharks for offensive defenseman Matt Carle, defensive prospect Ty Wishart (the No. 16 overall pick of the 2006 draft), San Jose's first-round pick in 2009 and a fourth-round pick in 2010.
An official announcement is expected soon.
Carle, 23, the brother of Lightning draft choice David Carle, who suffers from a heart ailment but still was taken with the 203rd overall pick, had two goals, 15 points in 62 games last season, but had 11 goals, 42 points in 2006-07. Wishart, a 6-foot-5, 203-pounder had four goals, 27 points last season for WHL Moose Jaw.
Boyle, who turns 32 on July 12, ends a six-year career with the Lightning during which he morphed from an afterthought into one of the league's best offensive defensemen. Boyle was acquired from the Panthers in January 2002 for a fifth-round draft pick in what was one of the best trades in Lightning history.
But his new six-year, $40-million contract was too lengthy for the new ownership group which also believes his $6.667-million annual paycheck too pricey for a team that before the move, was over the $56.7-million salary cap. Carle begins a four-year, $13.75-million contract that will pay $2.95-million next season.
The Lightning now has two first-round picks and two second-round picks in 2009.

Follow the Lightning through the season with beat writer Damian Cristodero and the Times sports staff. We invite your participation in the comments area.
As a converted Cdn living in Florida, I love hockey and the Lightning. I understand that this is a business as any other and when there is change in ownership, you have to expect that there will be changes down the line, no matter what was done in the past.
As a fan who now drives from Orlando to go to games, I am excited about the new season and will miss the great players of the past, but this is a business like any other, and although there are loyal fans, I have to stop and think about what the new owners are trying to accomplish -- another Stanley Cup! Go Bolts.

Challenging Us for 1st in the conf???
While I thank you for your encouragement in Our regard, guys...I mean with the team you got now, while different, it's the same kinda team you had last year but with an even younger and less experienced D-line...which wasn't hot to begin with, as we have all concurred. Big O; no D.
Bottom line,
I see a better chance of Mtl finishing LAST (cuz guys get hurt, sick and Cold) than TB has of finishing first (cuz guys DON'T become something they've never been).
When we say, "anything can happen", I don't think it means 15 teams in the Eastern Conf suddenly going hurt, sick and Cold for 7 months.
Which is what it would take for TB to finish 1st in the conf. (I'm exaggeratin', of course) You can score? Great. So can Ottawa. Think you'll agree that they might have the num1 1st-line in the World. But this year? They will stink. And everyone knows it.
1st in the South-East? Aaah!
Now we're talkin'.
Whose the prime enemy? I woulda said Washington with Huet there, but now, with Theo?
You'll be alright.
Consider that your "supposed" turnaround CAN'T equal Philly's last year and even those CLOWNS in orange had the good sense to aim for the playoffs only.
Aim for the Division.
THEN you can talk to Us.
Yo.

We didn't win the draft, we lost. How can you say that we won, by losing some of our best players? We would have won if we traded Adam Hall or Ryan Malone for Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin. Then kept Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich. I can't believe that Dan Boyle has been traded. That breaks my heart. Dan Boyle is one of my favorite players on the Lighting Team. We lost a couple of good players already. Tim Taylor, Brad Richards and Johan Holmqvist, John Tortorella, and now Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich. Who else are we going to lose? Vinny Lecavalier? Jeff Halpern? Paul Ranger? Marty St. Louis? Shane O'Brien? Andre Roy? Chris Gratton? I would like to wish Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich lots of luck with their new team. It's sad that we have to see them go. I would also like to Congratulate the newcomers on the team. However, I am excited to see Prospal and Craig back. Good Luck Dan and Brad. I will be cheering for you.

What a pole dancing twit/f@g! Personal attacks are how you get your rocks off? The guy has an opinion and a hope for a better representation on the ice than we ALL suffered three months ago.
You're pretty cool typing in your skivvies running people down with impunity. Find some tweezers and go for some intercrural wanking instead of the cyber variety for a change.

Bingo, You must be smoking crack to think DB could have gotten $8mil+ through free agency. Nobody would offer anything for him at the trade deadline. if they don't sign him they lose him for nothing. You guys are talking out your @$$ with no knowledge to back up your statements. If you were true hockey fans you would know how the collective bargaining agreement works and the way things were done. If you were going to lose a property you owned by now paying the taxes would you just not pay and let someone else grab it for next to nothing? The same principle works here. While I am disappointed that they had to resort to low level they did to get Danny to waive. he forced their hand by saying no, obviously many times. While I agree maybe it could have been handled more professionally, these are rookie owners learning there way around the cap. I believe they were blind sided by the new incentive agreement which didn't used to be included in the salary cap but now are. Otherwise I seriously doubt they'd have signed Roberts and Hall so early in the game. Life goes on. We have a stellar looking team, that with a little tweaking on the d could challenge Montreal for best in the east. Go Bolts!

For All the contract he signed was less than he could have made in the free market. The deal in free agency would have been for 1 - 1.5 more a year. If I'm vincent I'm not signing a deal. It's time for him to look elsewhere as his deal will be for an 8mil or just under price tag and Melrose never did like him.
These guys need to look at the wings. That is a team with class and they treat there players with class and respect. So they threatened him with a release to waivers and atlanta was in line..... nice sell job Ok Donkey. So the chant next year is Donkey BS sweet.
Yes, I like this team and they are my team. However, I will never believe anything from there mouths. That is not business that is BS.
Vincent - once you sign the contract they will badmouth you. Make it hard on them.... i will waive the NC but it will cost you another 10mil. Put it in the contract...... and tell them to chew on it.
Posted by: bingo | July 04, 2008 at 10:03 PM
Think of the back and forth we had a couple days ago. The excitement of such speed guys as Stamkos and Vrbata and power guys like Malone and Roberts. This is the reason Roberts and Hall were brought in I can see it now. Them along with Malone knew what their teams was up against, with 10 free agents after the season, but they pulled it together and left it all on the ice. This could be a fairy tale, worst to first, The Impossible Dream. Go Bolts!

I am a Boyle fan...but I like this move. I think it favored the Lightning, but I'm sure Boyle will do well in San Jose.
Let's face it, once Brad left, the 04 crew was history. This is new beginning and therefore we need to get past Boyle leaving. OK clearly wants to win and make the moves. 04's done and this is the most excitement we've seen since. I'm looking a lot more forward to this year that the last two...

bolf flasher read BD's comments in the Trib sounds a lot like he was mislead.

Duane-
I agree, not heart or chemistry yet.... but we'll have to wait until training camp (or longer) to see what kind of chemistry they develop. I seriously don't think they are through tinkering with the lineup on this team yet. I think they will add at least one more D-man to the team (Jason Smith(?) maybe?) and we'll just have to wait and see when (or if) they do develop any chemistry. For the team's sake, I hope they do. As far as the owners are concerned, I really don't trust what they say, but it's not the owners I am supporting, it's the players. We can only wait and see....
Posted by: TJ | July 04, 2008 at 09:02 PM
Its obvious Dan feels as if he was misled but things don't add up folks...I think I remember Feaster saying after the contract was signed that Dan was signed to finish his career here. That was Feaster, not OK, and in fact, OK wanted to trade him then and Dan knows that so how could he not be expecting that there was a possibility for this as well as just observe that they were over the cap and he was the most likely one to go...it implies he's not bright...
Posted by: Boltflasher | July 04, 2008 at 08:56 PM
I to liked DB but when he signed that contract he should have known this would hapen. If he really wanted to stay here he would have signed for less or reworked his contract for less money. No team tells a player (nor should they) that they are trying to trade them until they are sure they have a deal because if they tell them before and then can't make the deal they could have problems with the player.

great post Duane
Posted by: | July 04, 2008 at 08:53 PM
I'm not quite sold they've moved forward at all really. We basically are like the Rangers of the Southeast now - lots of talent yet no heart or chemistry..yet.
Sure they've loaded the team with much more talented players but this team didn't win a cup on talent alone - they won it with heart and grit. Something accountants and movie directors lack. JMO

are you saying we have to be blind to shadiness and misleading people in order to be true Bolts fans. I am a Bolt fan since day one and i bleed black, blue, and white also. I have been a fan longer then the current owners have been in charge, and although i do believe in doing what it takes for the good of the team, do it the right way and show class as an organization. Word of mouth goes a long way.
Posted by: | July 04, 2008 at 08:51 PM
We don't need the half-hearted fans anyway. Some of us here like Boltflasher, we bleed blue and black and white. While you can't like every move, or even necessarily approve how it was handled, the team is moving forward. People, just step back from your emotions for a minute and look at how this team stacks up how against some of the others in the league. Would you have even bothered last year. There's 2 sides to every story and while I appreciate DB and all he did for this team. His time had come to move on for the benefit of the team and he fudged. he forced ownership to play the hole card which was nasty, but what did they have left? We're a better team today because of this move and I can almost gurantee you there will be more to come.

Posted by: | July 04, 2008 at 08:28 PM
Anyway you see this, this is just crappy to see a pillar of this team leave.
DB was my favorite player on this team even when he struggled in the 07 season, I still loved the guy and loved his play.
The handling of this whole deal however is reminicent of the Bucs and John Lynch shove off. Despite making a decent trade out of all this, this management/ownership group can go to hell for all I care.
Posted by: Duane | July 04, 2008 at 08:23 PM
no one can logically look at this trade and say its a bad deal. yea, boyle is a fan favorite and will be missed, but changes were needed. OK has done a good job thus far. as far as this ordeal getting "personal," i look forward to seeing what happens, but its hard to believe that DB didnt see this comming or seriously consider the possibility. even if it did get "personal," what does he have to gain by making mention of it? he's in San Jose. its over.
Posted by: vagrant | July 04, 2008 at 08:20 PM
yes this is a different organization but if u dont think feaster and torts didnt screw players i got a bridge over tampa bay that i can sell u
Posted by: geo | July 04, 2008 at 08:18 PM
Hey, just curious...because of the CBA the contract has to be honored so they did him a big favor with that contract so wherever they would send him, the contract would have to be honored...
Posted by: Boltflasher | July 04, 2008 at 08:17 PM
hey flasher, did he see a dime of that, just curious.
Posted by: | July 04, 2008 at 08:12 PM
hey TJ your right class and honesty does not win championships, but it can bring talent, or keep it away.
Posted by: | July 04, 2008 at 08:11 PM
Yeah, Dan has been mistreated to the tune of $40 mill...get real people...
Posted by: Boltflasher | July 04, 2008 at 08:09 PM
I wish nothing but good luck for Danny and his family. I hope he has a monster season for SJ. But by the same token, Tampa did well for the trade, getting the 1st and 4st rounder (I assume the 4th rounder will become the property of Minnesota for the Rolston thing) and the prospect Wishart (who I understand is gonna be a good defensive player) along with Carle. It's not the trade I have a problem with, it's the way it was handled, especially after seeing some of the comments that Danny made. I know that honesty is not a requirement to be a hockey team owner or executive, but I have serious reservations about the "class" of the organization. There are those of you that will say "class" and honesty don't win hockey games talent does and you would be correct. Still, it stinks and I don't like it. But what's done is done and I will continue to be a Tampa Bay Lightning fan. I look forward to the upcoming season and will see the guys when they play against the 'Canes (only games I am close enough to go to).
Go Bolts!
Posted by: TJ | July 04, 2008 at 08:08 PM
Boltflasher, the organization that gave him the chance, and the one that screwed him are two seperate entities. Never heard anything like this from the previous regime.
Posted by: | July 04, 2008 at 08:06 PM
And what is with Ok Hockey and the Carle family, anyway? Politics and nepotism in pro sports really suck.
How many time was Carle benched in San Jose?
Posted by: dave | July 04, 2008 at 08:05 PM
in a way i am glad for Boyle he is going to a good situation for him. As for us we are left with an owner ship group with questionible business practices and ethics. If the Boyles trade needed to be done, then fine, i understand that, but be men about it and do it the right way, be up front with him and don't mislead him to believe he is part of the plan when you know he is not. Shady, plain Shady.
Posted by: | July 04, 2008 at 08:04 PM
Ok Hockey has undermined its own credibility with this move. Don't think other players both here and around the league aren't cognizant.
Whether you like the deal or not, it's a crappy way to do business.
Posted by: dave | July 04, 2008 at 08:02 PM
Again, after reading Dan's comments and some of the personal comments he got, I again see naivete from him and am astounded that he is so shocked. He should step back a minute and realize he should thank the organization for the chance they game him when he was an unknown, his name on the Cup, his contract, and a chance for a repeat on the Cup...
Posted by: Boltflasher | July 04, 2008 at 08:01 PM
Mark my words, in a couple of years the addition of Wishart to this trade will make it into one of the best deals this team has ever made.
Posted by: LightningRod | July 04, 2008 at 08:01 PM
Well this is a new chapter in the soap opera. OK really lost alot of fans support over this deal. They will have a hard time to make themselves look good in our eyes. I hope all the moves help us as a team because this is what it's all about, having a winning team.
Posted by: jhkyref | July 04, 2008 at 08:00 PM
This was a good trade for the lightning sorry to see boyle and luke go but we did alright Now for all of you who are down on kuba give it a break the is a good d-man and i'd say better than obrien from what i've seen at the games lets see how this pans out and for all we know it may turn out like the denis trade as some of u say but only in reverse time will tell
Posted by: geo | July 04, 2008 at 07:57 PM
To those of you upset at the Danny Boyle trade you should be, and I am too. But, don't use that as an exceuse to turn your back on your team or you're not a real fan. DB knew they tried to trade him at the deadline, so he had to know that being traded was a potential he might have to face. While I admire him for choosing to sign in Tampa anyway and for his loyalty and dedication to Tampa and his teammates, he would have signed anyway do to his personal situation. Danny has a great chance to win a cup with San Jose this year so don't be too sorry for him. He's needed to play next to a guy like Rob Blake for years and now he has his chance. I hope he rocks the western conference and gets another shot at the cup, but I am even more hopeful with our new Tampa Bay Lightning. For the 1st time since 04' we have four solid lines than can score or shut down the other team. While our defense is still a work in progress I think we are equal to what we had last season and only 1 or 2 moves from making us a contender. GO BOLTS!
Posted by: Don in St. Pete | July 04, 2008 at 07:54 PM
Yes, if the Bolts did indeed Bolt to Vegas, look for ATL or Panthers to move here....
Posted by: Boltflasher | July 04, 2008 at 07:53 PM
Those are some pretty tough comments from Boyle. You may not believe what they say, but it's still worth it to hear what ownership says about it, because they will definitely be asked. Circumstances change, and I have no problem with a team feeling in Feb. they want to keep a guy forever, then realizing a few months later he needs to be traded. But if it got as personal as Boyle says it did, that's not cool.

I'm a member of the national press and this is what I posted last night:
This is strictly rumor but I heard today that the Sharks are looking to move Matt Carle with some slop for Boyle.
Posted by: Tom M | July 03, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Without question, the Lightning harpooned the Sharks with what they were able to get back in this trade. Because, as I noted in my post last night, the Sharks were originally offering Carle and "slop" for Boyle.
Anyone who takes the time to carefully consider the assets that were moved could only conclude that the Lightning just got a heck of a lot better.
Best of luck to Danny Boyle and his new family. He's a great player, a character guy, and I hope he does well in the Shark tank!
Posted by: Tom M | July 04, 2008 at 07:52 PM
Oh I am so unhappy! I'm going to just sit here and hold my breath until somebody brings back Brad and Danny. Tortorella was great, so bring him back too along with Kuby, Feds, Roy, Clyde, Tails, and Khabibulin! Or else I won't be your best friend, and not renew my nose bleed season pack.
Ahem...
This will be another steal, just like the Richards dump. San Jose and Dallas will need a dentist after grinding their teefus so much. Down the road we can salivate over Smaby and Wishart, Mihalik and Picard. Whooo! For right now though, it's time for the talking heads to do some of that coaching stuff. (i.e., I see Mike Lundin having two choices: hump the weights and become more rugged, or not muscle-up and become injury prone.)
Anybody notice our picks in '09? Two first rounders and two seconds. We could do all right, and still shuffle a 1 and a 2, or both 1's for the top pick in Tavares! Hard to be displeased tonight for anything beyond the sake of angst itself, ya think?
And if Bucky and Cubby schlep the team off to points West, it would bite, being that community; whilst we inherit another club from some other place. It's all good, my sage and fellow bloggers.
Happy Fourth...
Go Bolts!

We still need a veteran on defense (besides Kuba) to pull this crew together. There are a couple of good ole timers out there left (Luke Richardson) being one of them. Overall I can't complain about this deal with Boyle, its going to fix this team in the long haul if they didn't hurt the team morale by sending him away like they did. I really think they should have packaged Shane O'brien in the deal as well and at least tried to get something back for completely botching their #1 draft pick in last year's draft. I never got it... that they took a 7th Rounder, O'brien, for their 1st round pick. Who ever managed that deal should be run out of town on a rail cart. Its just amzing to me how this team has spent the last week just un-botching everthing that Jay Feaster has managed to botch since 2004. For the life of me I just don't see how that guy is still with this organization. There must be something in his contract that keeps him in place until he's bought out or reaches the end of his deal. Funny, that the last time that I heard his name mentioned was when he let Torts go. At least I'm glad that he's doesn't appear to be driving the bus anymore.

I see Dan's comments about his trade and find those naive....Gretzky, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Carlton Fisk, Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Tom Seaver, Patrick Roy, Bryan Trottier,...all great names that were traded during their Hall of Fame careers...again, Dan, thanks to the Bolts you have a $40 million contract and your name on the Stanley Cup....
Posted by: Boltflasher | July 04, 2008 at 07:44 PM
schlepp,
Yeah, it stinks that Boyle's feelings were hurt. But he still got to keep his big contract and tell the Lightning where he would be willing to play. If loyalty turns out to not be the strongest characteristic of this front office, then so be it. They'll join corporate people everywhere doing the same thing. How do you think employees at the Trib or the Times or every other Florida newspaper are feeling now when they're getting laid off without keep their salary or telling the paper where they would like to work next. Danny boy will be just fine.
Posted by: William | July 04, 2008 at 07:41 PM
sorry to see Danny go..but this deal is an absolute steal, great trade, for the bolts...great deal OK Hockey...now let's use a SJ 1st and Phillys 2nd for Florida's Bouwmeister.....

Just to clarify something about Wishart, because the main post doesn't make it clear. In 07-08, he had 40pts (12g-28a) in 40 games with the Prince George Cougars and 27pts (4g-23a) in 32 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors. 67pts in 72 games is pretty damn impressive, and he is suppose to be a stud defensively. I think Tampa definately did a good job in this trade.
Posted by: Beau | July 04, 2008 at 07:33 PM
Tough to see Danny go, but to get Carle & one of the NHL's top dmen prospects is huge. Toss in a couple of draft picks and it's a steal!! I think our D will be in good shape. A change in philosphy is what was needed. We will have much more focus on protecting our net instead of gambling in the offensive end with our DMen. Our top 6 is solid and we have great depth beyond that:
Ranger
Carle
Kuba
Picard
O'Brien
Niskala
Lundin
Smaby
Mihalik
I think we can still move Kuba and improve the team. I am excited about what I saw from Smaby late in the year. He looks to be a Brooks Orpik style of player himself. And don't discount Niskala. He tore it up in the AHL last year and was a solid addition. Can't wait to see him in a Bolts uniform!! Opening Night can not get here soon enough!!!
Posted by: Brandon Bill | July 04, 2008 at 07:33 PM
Wise words from the Turtle as always. Those who are disappointed at the trade would be wise to do as he has done and move on. We can't reverse the trade, but can root for the team and exort the owners to bolster the team. Barry, you need to get over it man. Orpik was the 5th defenseman for Pitt and had a good cup series. this does not instantly make him a top 2 guy. We see if he can elevate his game to the same level over the course of the coming year. We NEEDED a bunch of forwards. We had trouble scoring at all at the end of the year because we had AHL players and 3rd and 4th liners except for Mart and Vinny. I expect all of these players to blossom this year under a more relaxed coach and a new scheme. Carle will get his goals and be a solid top 4 defenseman. Niskala scored 19 goals playing against the other teams top lines every night in the AHL and may be ready to make the jump to the NHL. Smaby and Picard are getting better every day. Plus I believe management will make a move to bring in at least 1 more top four d-man though we really need 2. I would expect Kuba, Ward, Jokinen and maybe even Tarnasky to be affered if they can find an ideal situation. Vancouver is desperate for help on the front line and has solid depth at d. Keep your head up and remember it's all about the team.
