Lightning in Traverse City

Tampa Bay will play in a prospects tournament in Traverse City, Mich., for the sixth straight years. Here is the announcement from the team and a schedule:

The Lightning is once again one of eight NHL teams participating in a prospect tournament at Center Ice. Arena in Traverse City, Mich., from Sept. 12-17. This is the sixth consecutive year the Lightning has participated in the tournament.

Among the prospects schedule to compete for the Lightning are defenseman Ty Wishart, a 2006 first-round draft choice acquired from San Jose this summer, as well as top Lightning draft choices Dana Tyrell (47th overall, 2007), James Wright (117th overall, 2008), Mitch Fadden (107th overall, 2007) and Luca Cunti (75th overall, 2007). Tampa Bay’s prospects will compete against prospects from the Atlanta Thrashers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues. Head coach Darren Rumble and assistant coach Alan May of the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals will coach the Lightning prospects.

Practice sessions and tournament games will be held on the facility’s two sheets of ice – David’s Rink and Citizens Rink – located at 1544 Hammond Road in Traverse City. The Lightning will play in the Eastern Conference along with Atlanta, Detroit and the NY Rangers. The Western Conference will consist of Columbus, Dallas, Minnesota and St. Louis.

At the conclusion of the tournament, select players will join the Lightning training camp, which begins with physicals and testing Sept. 16 at the St. Pete Times Forum. Scrimmages and practices begin on Sept. 17, and are open to the public.

Following is the Lightning’s day-to-day schedule in Traverse City:

Sept. 12: Practice, 7:45 p.m.

Sept. 13: Practice  8:30 a.m.; Lightning vs. Thrashers, 3 p.m.

Sept. 14: Practice 11:30 a.m.; Lightning vs. Red Wings, 6:30 p.m.

Sept. 15: Practice Noon.

Sept. 16: Practice 9:30 a.m.; Lightning vs. Rangers 3 p.m.

Sept.  17: Practice TBD; 7th-place Game, 2 p.m.; 5th-place game, 2:30 p.m.; 3rd-place game, 6 p.m.; Championship Game, 6:30 p.m.
