Ouch, babe
Goaltenders absorb enough punishment from pucks fired in anger during games, so they don’t much appreciate a new welt imparted by a teammate in a morning skate. The Lightning’s Olaf Kolzig and Mike Smith each took hard shots high off their bodies in practice on Saturday at the Pepsi Center and their only consolation was to carp about it with each other.
Jeff Halpern had apparently fallen off Smith’s Christmas card list while Kolzig was muttering about Evgeny Artyukhin.

Ajax,
One of the few times we agree on something :) I wish I could say your facts and reasoning were't being wasted on someone like PD.

He's making the most money on the worst team in hockey..figure it out man.
He is the team
Leo maybe but the PP aint so hot, neither is Kovy and you sure need a center.

We're one point ahead of where we were last year.
Don't worry about us.

I forgot one thing PD. Today you are harping big time on VL4 even strength points. Look at the last two years. In both years only one person each year(of the top 12 scorers) had less PPlay points than Vinnie. Hence you want to argue something that for two years straight was so very false. This is the part of you that massages the facts to fuel your dislikes.
Last year Vinny was 4th in the entire league in even strength points playing on the worst team in hockey with no D. This should end all arguments about Vinny but each and everyday you call him out for the bum he is. It is far past opinion when presented with the facts.
There are only 3 guys in the top 25 scoring last year who didn't make the playoffs PD. VL4 was the top scorer followed by Kovalchuk and Marty. Not to bad of company PD.
It is an off night for bloggers but these are the facts that everyone should be digesting as they jump on the "blame Vinny" bandwagon. I would love to see Vinny play on Detroit just one year, where he could get 45-55 PPlay points and have a D6 that could get him the puck all night. Scarry. I am getting worked up responding to the obvious. He again is on the worst team in hockey, the lowest scoring team in hockey, and doing pretty darn good for a team that does so little. Once again I leave with an AHHHHHHHHHH.

Now PD, we go way back, but ahem, your last post made me chuckle just a tad(buddy) I like fair criticism, I love reading suggestions on the x's and o's, but please do not pass yourself off as a fan of "our" team. I believe in being nice, as much as humanly possible to everyone, a great rule of thumb. Nothing turns my stumach more to read people attack Feaster cause he is a big man. That really turns me off. Talk hockey and leave the insults to shock radio(the fact that those guys make so much money is a real sign of a troubled nation) But, big BUT, fans of Tampa also see the good things. They also enjoy in strides to improve. They have hope in the team, they have bliss when they win 3 out of 4. They see the good trades and hope the bad ones can be rectified. They go to games with a Xmas type attitude(not scrooge!!) And partner, You do not fit the last couple statements. I think that is fair, and as much as anyone, I tire of the 248 negative blogs in a row. But we all have opinions(truths) about how we interpret hockey and life. THe real smile you put on my face is this. I find it quite amazing someone puts so much effort into something he hates so much. I say that to myself three times a week when I read your "opinions" I have never seen anything like it. I am much more on the side of the fence that wishes you could see a little sunshine once in a while. Sometimes you write some very good things, that yes, are negative. But when EVERYTHING is negative I think any message of importance is lost in the tidal wave of yuk you have for our beloved Bolts. I think at this point most people don't read the context of your rant, they just say PD is being PD. Sunshine for everyone. Bolts destroy Philly tomorrow 4-2. The best floater in the whole darn world racks up a goal and an assist!!! The Bolts win, who cares about any darn depression!!!! That is a fan!!!
Posted by: ajax | December 01, 2008 at 10:05 PM
Leo, you are right that he has more points, however, montreal wins games on team scoring. Things are a different style in Tampa. It's been this way for a few years now...the team gets by from big goals from our big guns. So, when Vinny isn't putting up near league-leading numbers, the rest of Tampa Bay feels it. Should he have to? No. But he knew he was going to have to produce if they wanted to win when he resigned.
Posted by: mike p | December 01, 2008 at 10:05 PM
And Grabovski is outscoring them all even strength.
Points to a very very bad centennial Leo.

Well, Flash.
Don't know for certain, but I think "he who has been sucking so far this year" in TB has more points than Our Koivus and Tanguays and Markovs who are playin' great.
That help lay a bit more perspective on the issue?

Heh Bingo, Ajax and I go way back.
have a nice koolaide and relax.
Posted by: PD | December 01, 2008 at 08:53 PM
Leo, all I said was Vinny has sucked so far this year...well below his usual. That doesn't mean he's not a great player. Right now he's playing below his own level on a team that's playing below its capable level. Actually I think his numbers can increase dramatically if #12 starts camping out in front of the net. I don't think we'll see the MVP line too much anymore because Malone needs to play on Vinny's line...
Posted by: Boltflasher | December 01, 2008 at 08:43 PM
PD - thank you for my dose of depression today, just like every other day. If the team had the same level of caring that you have for your depressed state of mind we would be 1 24 - 0. Sure feels like it when I read your garbage..... Be constructive for once in your life. But as ajax has stated on numerous occasions it is beyond the mind of a pin head like you.

I’ll be ready at the 25 game mark to evaluate the performances, projected pratfall, and job justification of the following:
Ryan Craig; Mark Recchi; Gary Roberts; Matt Pettinger; Radim Vrbata; Chris Gratton; Olaf Kolzig; and our ENTIRE defense corps.
I think fans can already come up with a noose big enough for two necks, Lawton and Barrie, to be the first double hanging in Mascotte. I think the Gaspar ship would be a nice locale.
You know me, I’m like Trader Phil. I’d flip ‘em all NOW, for people who actually want to play this game, in this town, in our barn, with intensity, consistency and a ‘refuse to lose’ attytood (That’s how they say it in Philly, right Coach T?) on every single shift, in every single game, all the way through next June.
If we are going to race to get Tavares or Hedman (it certainly looks that way…), let’s revamp now and go with the youth in Norfolk, so when the newbies arrive next fall, the current group won’t be so skittish over a few bruises.
Scratchy CD again…..an excellent GM is waiting in the wings for the Rangers, Jim Schoenfeld.
How the heck can WE get him?
Go Bolts!

Want to put a big kabosh to some of these thought processes. Check out the last three years. Vinnie is top 10 of even strength scoring all 3 years. His PPlay numbers are paltry compared to some of the other top scorers. (Tampa hasn't had a guy in front of the net on PPlays since Capt Dave Retired) Check it out. I have always used this as one of my points about how good Vinny would be if he was on a "real" team. How many penalties the guy has drawn over the last few years. This year you can see the fact that he won't drive to the net is showing in alot of ways. One of them, fewer penalties caused by VL4. But his numbers 5/5 are superlative considering the W-L record of the team.
Vinny was a one man gang most of last year. i would like to think we could build, but with no hotshots in the minors and I got to believe payroll take a downturn next year, Vinny might one day be Mats Sundin, Jr. and wanting to get out of Tampa for one more shot at the CUP. To bring up his +/- stats after playing for some 25-50-7 teams his first few years is Riiiiidicccculous conversation. Mario Lemieux was minus 48 his first year with a horrible Pitts team for example.
Posted by: ajax | December 01, 2008 at 07:01 PM
The funniest thing about the Halpern/Smith thing is that Halpie was the one who slashed Smitty in the arm at practice last season in Dallas and caused him to miss several games with a sore arm.
As for Tavares, the Stars are fighting you for him! And as of right now, we're winning

Oh. My. Gosh.
Flasher. Flashman. My friend.
I CAN'T believe you just said that. If you were up north and said that about the "Vinny" of the team, you would be tarred and feathered and stuck in a nailed barrel and rolled down a hill.
There will NEVER be a better player in your organization than Vinny. You ARE aware of that?
Please tell me you realize this.
Whatever the problem or problems are, fix'em. Do whatever it takes to fix'em. Flashy, c'mon.
Or hey, don't.
Deal's still on the table: Plecky, Higgy, Dandy, 2nd rounder.
And uh...we'll take that guy who "sucks" on your team offa yore hands.

Well Patrick if you think 5 goals in 23 games is good then Vinnys your guy..
or 1 in Stamkos case
The readers at Hockey Buzz, a large crew, recently voted Malone as the absolute worst free aquisition pick up and Hossa the best.Actualkly all the Bolt pickups were rightly rated an F. Not so go Len Barrie.
I could go with you or them..
If you think you can have two sets of rules on the team, one for Vinny and one for the rest, then Patrick my man I shall defer to you again.
and lastly Vinny sucks defensively and does have a albatross 11 year 10 mill contract..rotsa ruck with that one in 2010.
Posted by: PD | December 01, 2008 at 06:35 PM
PD,
Lol, forgive me for overlooking your 2nd pillar there. Thanks for that laugh. I'll also overlook the fact you've failed to answer most of my questions and responses to your assertions.
You were wrong and still are factually wrong on Lecavalier getting the majority of his points on the PP. He has 11 even strength points and 9 PP points. Look at the freaking stats, would you? Here, I'll help you:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/teams/stats?team=tam
I actually agree with you about the value of accountability as a team, but I think you were way off target saying Lecavalier should be sat. He centers the top line - His job is offense, defense and faceoffs, especially at key times. Vinny is a +2 and leading the team in points, and in the games I've watched recently, he's doing great on key faceoffs. Despite all that, yeah he looks the most uninspired I've seen him look in a long time. I certainly wouldn't sit him though - he's still team's most productive player. He just needs someone else to be the "C". I honestly don't even think you were serious when you said it, but you keep defending it like you were.
I also agree with you that sitting Arty was Tocchet's least impressive move so far. But Arty is a 3rd, 4th liner. His job is defense and hitting. The wild game was the first game in a while I didn't see him scare the defense and Tocchet was quoted saying Arty had 2-3 turnovers that lead to scoring opportunities. He's also not had much time in the league - still moldable hopefully. So while I didn't like it, it makes much more sense than sitting Lecavalier. That probably would be the end of Lecavalier or Tocchet in tampa, which is probably what you really want.
No, I didn't check the +/- numbers on the players you mentioned. Looking at their +/- without considering how good or bad the rest of the team was would be an incomplete picture - something you have shown you are very comfortable with. Looking all that up would be too much time for too little reward in discussing this with you. Going back and forth with you reminds me of arguments in college with my friends when we were drunk - not very fruitful. I think I am done with it on this post.
And I see other people are disagreeing with some of the many statements you make so casually - ottawa's management being better than ours, Malone's contract being bad. One person posted that he needs to get over his need instant gratification - hmm. I guess team's aren't rebuilt in one offseason by first time owners, coaches and GMs.

No kidding F, both he and Lukowich have to be odds on favorite for another ring while living on Pebble Beach.

"Flasher the great Boyle played with 1 arm and no help last year. Not fair."
My point exactly...no help last year. That's what I have been saying...Boyle's points this year are a result of the team's play as a whole.
Posted by: Boltflasher | December 01, 2008 at 10:05 AM
Partick I said they (2) got the majority of their points on the PP and as floaters they have.
My only point on Tocchet was that if his thing is to sit guys who aren't hitting and playing d then he has to do it with everybody or he has zero credibilitity, not that he has any anyway.
Its called team accountability, you have it or you don't regardless if you cherry pick pp points.
I'm sure you have had a quick look at the +/- numbers of all those players I listed Patrick and there is no comparison with any of them.
You neglected to comment back on LeCavaliers contract, the 2nd pillar of my he's hardly flawed??? response.
Interesting timing with an article in the Toronto Sun today on Vinny and Marty:
BOLTS JOLTED
Life possibly could get worse for members of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Interim coach Rick Tocchet has failed to make a big impact since taking over from Barry Melrose, who was fired 16 games into the season.
In seven games with Tocchet behind the bench, the Lightning has mustered up one win, with three of its six losses coming in shootouts. After its latest loss, a 4-3 fall to the Avalanche in Colorado on Saturday, Tocchet was steaming mad.
"This is a business and I think our patience is running thin on some people," Tocchet said. "We had about five or six guys lay eggs and it's not good enough. Life is going to get miserable around here. It's almost like some guys are collecting a paycheque right now and that's a sad statement."
Tampa made a trade yesterday, acquiring right winger Lauri Tukonen from the Dallas Stars, with defenceman Andrew Hutchinson heading to Texas.
But how much will that help a club that's in last place in the Eastern Conference? Vincent Lecavalier signed an 11-year contract in the summer and is going nowhere. Martin St. Louis, on the other hand, is under contract for two more seasons after this one, at $5.25 million US against the cap in each. The team is in major disarray. General manager Brian Lawton should be trying to find out what he could get for St. Louis.
Guess whos laying the biggest egg Patrick, your pouty captain who you see as flawless. NOT
Thanks coach!

PD
"the guys a floater" - This goes back to him not being a leader, he doesn't have the biggest heart, but he does have top 5 talent. Skating with St Louis - big heart - has inspired him to be more consistent, he's openly said that. But this is nothing new, he's been like that his whole career. Part of him not being a leader, he doesn't have the biggest heart. I over simplified it when I said him not being a leader is his only flaw. I can admit it.
Your explanation - "Its really simpleton logic Patrick , both those guys are getting the vast majority of their points on the power play."
That's pathetic. The team scoring the least amount of goals in the league is going to sit players who are scoring because they score on the power play and not 5 on 5? That is your explanation? How about you just admit you made a silly statement there as well and stop digging. Plus, you're also just wrong - Vinny has 11 of his 20 points at even strength, that's a minority, not a "vast majority".
Lecavalier has a -78 lifetime +/-. Let's see, he was a double digit minus from 99-02, some of the worst lightning teams in their history. He's had one other negative season, last year, when they were dead last. I'm not going to bother looking up the +/-'s and team records for all the years of those other players, but anyone can see it's related to how well the team does to an extent. And Vinny has been on a lot of bad lightning teams. How about his lifetime in the playoffs, when it's the nhl's best teams against each other? He's even.
Posted by: Patrick | December 01, 2008 at 02:04 AM
Patrick asks..Vinny is scoring points on the worst offense in the league and so is Stamkos lately. Explain your "logic".
5 on 5
Vinny 23 games 5 goals 6 assists
Stamkos 23 games 1 G 3 Assists
I'm sure your getting back with the defensive side Patrick.
Posted by: PD | November 30, 2008 at 11:34 PM
Its really simpleton logic Patrick , both those guys are getting the vast majority of their points on the power play. 5 on 5 we are the worst team in the league.
Then you spout this gem:
I agree with most the posts here that Vinny is not the leader of the team. Maybe he's trying to force the coach to remove it from him. That's his only flaw, and no reason to trade him
Thats his only flaw? Patrick quite apart from having the worst contract in the league the guys a floater, he waits at the blue line for the breakout pass which isnt coming because Boyle is gone . So those are two solid reasons why no one but Montreal would touch him.
Get back to me with his lifetime plus /minus numbers vs some other stars who play both ways.
Try Malkin /Crosby/Ovechkin/Heatly/Iginla/Ztetterberg/Selanne/ Hossa ect ect
Posted by: PD | November 30, 2008 at 11:07 PM
PD,
"Yup #1" - Way to prove your point. Can't say I'm surprised you had absolutely nothing to back it up with.
Back in the prediction post, I said we need to give Tocchet 25 games, unless you think he's responsible for the team's first 16 under Melrose. Even if they still suck after 50 games this year and the management has stopped playing music chairs with the roster, I will still be looking for positive signs from the team. I won't be trying to create them out of thin air, I'll just be looking and hoping for them. Why you have a problem with fans of the lightning on a lightning blog doing that is beyond me.
Now let's examine one of _your_ statements - In an article by Damian where he said Stamkos is arguably one of the team's better forwards lately, you asked when Tocchet was going to move Vinny and Stamkos up to the press box to watch a game. Vinny is scoring points on the worst offense in the league and so is Stamkos lately. Explain your "logic".
Posted by: Patrick | November 30, 2008 at 10:54 PM
This team still has no attitude and no leadership. No one has stepped up and said "its my team lead, follow or get out of the way." This team is going to have to solve its problems within itself. Throwing money and more spoiled millionaire players in the equation will not help a thing. This team needs teammates who want to win at any cost....plain and simple. This team gave up and quit last season and they have not recovered from that disease yet. The only answer I can think of is that they need a new winning attitude and a proven coach that knows what the hell he is doing. Pat Burns should have been hired way back and made coach of this team at the beginning of the season. At least by now we would have known the the truth about this team's future play instead of shrugged shoulders and rolling eyes. Its time to ban the golf play and fishing and time to start thinking hockey first. Hey Lightning...show us your manhood...stop playing girly-man- excuse hockey and start playing NHL hockey.

Flasher the great Boyle played with 1 arm and no help last year. Not fair.
How about Lukowich being +29 with the 04 team and plus 10 already this year?
anybody with the guts to go to the paint would cash in with Crosby, but maybe that's an issue. Bolts have a ton of 3 point shooters.
Posted by: PD | November 30, 2008 at 10:18 PM
Crosby had 63 assists in his first season...who the hell would he pass to here to get 63 assists??
Posted by: Boltflasher | November 30, 2008 at 10:09 PM
You said it Leo, Vinny does suck in TB right now. He's got 20 points tied for 41st in the league...normally he is in top 5 or leads the league. That sounds like suck to me...and the great Boyle, what were his +/- last year?
Posted by: Boltflasher | November 30, 2008 at 09:55 PM
Thats my logic too Leo, guess it doesn't necessarily trancend state lines.
Nice start to the Habs homestand, could get the bus moving.

Yup #1 Patrick and you asked for patience and 20 games..well?
Posted by: PD | November 30, 2008 at 09:10 PM
Not that I'm siding with PD or anything but when Pitt won the Crosby sweepstakes, weren't they just about to go bankrupt?
Didn't their team suck?
Didn't they miss out on the playoffs that year?
Yet, how many points did the snot-nosed, green rookie get? What, 80?
Call that suckin'?
Crosby would not "suck" in TB. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. He might have a FEW less points but he definitely would lead the rest of your boys by a healthy margin in the pts dep.
...Crosby would suck in TB... sheesh.
By that rationale, VINNY sucks in TB.
Right?

I cant agree with you more Joe! Smaby and Mihalik are much better for our blue line than Hutchinson. He makes me so nervous out there. Everytime he went to make a pass I think my ulcer kicked me. If my memory serves me right, I believe us bloggers were excited to see what Smaby would bring. I've seen it before and I like it. Not as much as I would like a veteran D-man, but I liked it! Torts was warming up to Smabes and Mihalik, giving Smabes 20 plus mins on the ice at the end of last season...then he doesnt make the team?? We need some physicality for Gods sake!
Let's go bolts!!

I am the worst homer on the blog? Because I said give them time after a mostly new roster, new coaches and ownership? Does that sound too reasonable to you or something? Please quote me on my many homerisms if I am the worst on the blog... there should be limitless examples of it according to you.
You think anyone who is not joining right along side you pointing out every negative nuance, real or just imagined by you, of every game is delusional. Every time someone points out Vinny is scoring goals, points and winning key faceoffs during the games, you say, yeah, but he looks lazy while he is scoring goals, points and winning those faceoffs. Stamkos, who was drafted for his offensive potential, starts scoring - something you undoubtedly ragged on him for when he hasn't - and you say but he wasn't a + for the game!
Shoot the messenger... that's funny. I'd be less inclined to do so if you changed your message up every now and then... like try to work in some objectivity, or even try to act you want the lightning to succeed every now and then.

Yes, PD, Boyle is in the perfect place to shine...big point: "It’s about getting team victories,” Boyle said. “Everybody is chipping in. The defensemen are contributing offensively. From top to bottom, everybody is playing well.”
It doesn't take a Scotty Bowman to figure out Danny would not have the points here that he has in San Jose. No one here other than Smitty is playing well. Danny's numbers, if here, would resemble last year's.
Yes, Crosby would suck with this team...he and/or Boyle would need to bring their teamates with them...

Boyle leads Sharks past Stars
Dan Boyle scored two goals, Evgeni Nabokov made 25 saves and the NHL-leading San Jose Sharks beat the Dallas Stars 6-2.
“It’s about getting team victories,” Boyle said. “Everybody is chipping in. The defensemen are contributing offensively. From top to bottom, everybody is playing well.”

Stars get Hutchinson from Lightning for Tukonen
1 hour, 16 minutes ago
Buzz Up
PrintDALLAS (AP)—The Dallas Stars acquired defenseman Andrew Hutchinson from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday, trading away the rights to winger Lauri Tukonen, who plays in Europe.
Hutchinson has appeared in 97 career games with Nashville, Carolina and Tampa Bay. He has 10 goals and 23 assists. He is scoreless in two appearances with Tampa Bay this season.
Hutchinson has a goal and 13 assists in 20 games this season with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. He is expected to join the Stars for their upcoming road trip to Calgary and Edmonton, beginning Tuesday.

Patrick you are one of the worst lipstick on a pig offenders.
Tell me where I am off track rather than your usual shoot the messenger crap..its old now Patrick, you've had the 25 games that you were begging for.
The proof is on the table. They blew the reconstruct big time with unbelievably poor player moves and wasted cap $. The meddling and lack of autonomy for coach and GM are the anvil on the cake Patrick.
Funny I think it non other than lead con Len Barrie that predicted the Bolts would win the SE. You miss that Rosie memo Patrick?

Couldn't disagree with you more. The haters like yourself have posted more consistently on this blog than the homers since its existence.
What is the point of your post above? You're pissed that fans are looking for positives despite the worst record in the sport last year and having a losing record this year? Do you want this blog to be all b!tching, all the time? Sorry, I'm going to give the entirely new team and new coaching staff some time to get things together. Only the most unrealistic fans were expecting them to glide into the playoffs because of all the moves in the offseason. All the moves in the offseason, not to mention a coaching change in the first 20 games are why this team could be expected to struggle.

Herb's post was so bang on about the eternal enabling and polishing of the Bolt turd that goes on here.
They were never in that game last night other than a couple of late power play goals against Andrew Raycroft. Smith gave away the winning goal. Stamkos was yet again a minus, he is getting anything he gets on the power play.
Anne, I get it Boyle is going to the All Star game but would suck if still here. So Crosby would suck here and Iginla would suck here and Ovechkin would suck here..I got it.
The problem with the team is very simple and yet I fear uncorrectable other than by economic force majure:
DYSFUNCTIONAL OWNERSHIP that grants NO autonomy to the GM or Coach.
Cuban lite, It never works, they are in way over their head and its too late to correct the brutal trades and free agent signings.
Game, set, match.
Olin brother, ajax had a Sat cutoff or we all would have given them a pick of 50 losses, Herb wins.

Posted by: olin | November 30, 2008 at 11:56 AM
Ouch, babe is right. It's going to be a long winter in Lightningville. Couple of things off the top of my head: Smitty should be starting every game unless he's injured. Arty did not deserve to be benched and has played with the most heart, mixing it up all year. Stamkos is a good, not great pick up but could elevate his game to the elite level. Malone is almost earning his cap hit but not salary this year. He needs to continue to elevate his game. Gary Roberts has no business being in the NHL anymore. Sit him the rest of the year and save some salary.
When is Halpern coming back? He seems to be bringing the heat with his shot in practice.
One more thing, are these owners patient enough to rebuild for a few years?

Who said at the beginnig of the year that they couldn't do worse than last year, sorta pokin'a shot at Tortorella and Feaster in the process? Melrose, Lawton? I forget.
Point is,
You CAN'T finish last. 29th is ok. Not last.
You CAN'T have less points than last year. One extra is fine. Can't have less.
Or your loss of face, this time, will be monumental.

I paid my price to biatch about this team......I spent a lot of money in buying full season tickets in which I didn't have the money to begin with. I do only one thing in this world for entertainment, and that's going to Lightning hockey games. I am miserable through the summer with nothing on TV or no games to go to. I want this team to win but they have made some really STUPID MOVES that have made me angry. The Boyle fiasco is on the top of my list. Remember what OK was saying about Carle when they brought him in?

Despite my feelings as posted above, there were a couple positive things about the game last night now as I can look back on it after a night's sleep:
Stamkos played a great game and looks like he is coming into his own.
After the slow start, the Vinny, Marty, Malone line played a solid game with each getting points and Malone's 5 hits leading that dept (though, it begs "where's arty?")..
and Smitty played well in relief, they may have won the game had he played the whole game (his portion was 3-1 Bolts).
However, its December now and have yet to see anything out of most of the rest of them. Prospal has great years every other year and this is an in-between year, nothing at all yet from Vrbata, Hall went 0-6 on faceoffs (V4 was 13-7!!) and don't even get me started on Krajicek, Lundin, and Hutchinson.
Is it time to take a look at Ray Emery for backup?

Oh and not to mention the fact that Arty was benched for what most of the rest of the team has been doing all season. As I stated in another post, if you get benched for giving the opposition scoring chances, then Ranger should have gotten benched for half the season already.
