SI ranks the third jerseys

Just thought this was interesting, though I believe the Lightning jersey is better than where it is ranked:

I don't really agree with the rankings either. I really like the Lightning's third jerseys and Ottawa's (they're pretty much the same idea).

They did have it right by ranking the Stars last though. Ugh, worst 3rd jersey idea ever. I'd take the Mooterus over them.

I like the new 3rd jersey's a lot - that is a great shade of blue. I think the gray stripe goes very well with it. Glad we finally have a colorful jersey. I wanted to love the original 3rd when it came out, but couldn't. Now I just have to figure out who's jersey I'll be buying. Right now I am leaning towards Smitty.

Oh man hyjyljyj, you managed to snag one?! That's lucky...yea I would pay 200+ for one of those (in case there are any bloggers who happen to have one and feel like they made a mistake in buying one)!

mike p, count me in the crowd that thinks the '98 third jersey was one of the best-designed and best-executed in all of sports history. I searched online for two solid years before finally finding one on eBay at the bargain price of only $150. I would have snapped it up at twice that, so hard are they to find and so mesmerizing are the movement suggested by the fierce rain slashing across it and the dark gray, ominously foreboding, choppy waves across the bottom (genius design cue there IMO, it IS a BAY, after all). The old numerals on them were awesome as well, all jagged around the edges. We should still be using those numerals, no question. The fiery lightning bolts on the sleeves could have been done a little better, maybe outlined in that rich deep purple seen in photographs of lightning instead of yellow, but the overall effect is just ultra-cool to me.

Yes, I understand there is a separate and larger group out there who detests, loathes, hates, despises, abominates, reviles and abhors the '98 third with every fiber of their being. I'm in the other group. No accounting for taste--as is proven by SI ranking that stupid, boring, ugly Flyers third third, and the PIT one first. Huh??? I mean it's cool and all, but powder blue doesn't exactly say "hockey" to me, esp. when you consider how godawful those early Pens teams were. Call me crazy but throwbacks should throw you back to GOOD times IMO. (See: Oilers, Islanders, Canadiens)

The writer obviously hates black, but facts are facts, and black sells more sports jerseys than any other color by 2:1. It looks great against white ice and feels tougher. DAL gets an F- for forgetting 3rd jerseys are supposed to be in color instead of white. Oops!

Wait...the guys at SI really can't tell that's an orca on the Canucks' logo?? I agree it's stupid, bad and irritating, but it's easily identifiable. Stick in the rink is still and always their best iconic logo, and the blue, green and white are definitely the colors they need to stick with from now on. Has any team in pro sports ever had such a train wreck of color schemes and logos?

BUF's 3rd should be their regular jersey; the buffaslug is the worst jersey crest since the Picasso coyote and needs to be relegated to the same design scrap heap

mike p,

i'm not mad at you. i just absolutely disagree with you. as a design professional those ugly things offended me. the old 3rd jersey was a train wreck of color and images. still not sure why it had flames on the cuffs. and those "rain drops" looked like the graphic symbol for feet (as in 6'4).

espo designed them and it shows. (you dont see me trying out for the team, he should've allow those who do it for a living to design them).

I don't know if this comment will get a lot of people mad at me, but I really liked the bolts original third jersey from back in the day...hopefully they will bring that back when the team gets a little older to bring back a totally 'retro' look.

Its hard for me to make this not sound like I'm just a "fence" jumper, but what I will say is that I'm a huge fan of the Pens' powder blues. They are sharp, retro, and are completely different from their standard home and away colors, factors that IMHO should be used to design EVERY 3rd. Jersey.

That is why I think our Third Jersey should be ranked a bit higher in that SI Pole, however, it could have been better. A different logo, a new word mark, something, ANYTHING! Its not so much that the word "Bolts" aggravates me, its just the fact that its a diagonal wordmark in the same family as the Rangers, mid-90's Penguins, Hartford Wolfpack, and a half dozen other hockey teams over the years in multiple leagues. BORING!

But the blue is great, and far more original than the half dozen black 3rd. jersey's that are polluting the league... and don't even get me started on Dallas.

I like the Bolts 3rd, but some don't, so do those who don't like the "Bolts" jersey like the Pitt 3rd?

Thanks for the link, though...

When I saw that hideous Pitt 3rd jersey was ranked #1, I didn't even look any further....
