Tampa Bay Lightning's Jussi Jokinen on waivers
The Tampa Bay Lightning placed Jussi Jokinen on waivers at noon Friday. We will know whether he clears or is picked up by another team at noon Saturday. Jokinen has six goals but zero in his past 15 games.
The Lightning also returned goaltender Karri Ramo to AHL Norfolk.

Coach Bill, thanks, I need to show up at the next Happy Hour, when is it?
Posted by: brendan | December 23, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Brendan they were up against it financially when they came in and that was with full houses and a decent economy. Even then the team was losing millions.
No way they can pull this off.

PD, thanks for the info, I did not realize that. I am pulling for OK Hockey, but they are really going to be up against it financially.
Posted by: brendan | December 22, 2008 at 05:48 PM
Coach Bill, if you bought a hockey team wouldn't you hire a hockey man (GM) right away? I am sure you and I know a lot about hockey, but would you and I make trades, etc.? No, of course not, we would bring in experts who are on the inside and know the game inside and out. You are right, they have tried, but a lot of wrong decisions, but it seems because of improper guidance. Now , when they start to unload players, I have no confidence they will get anything back and they will get fleeced on any deal. IE, the Boyle trade, Vrbata signing, etc.
Posted by: brendan | December 22, 2008 at 05:20 PM
Brendan thats not the half of it, Palace then gets the team back when OK defaults, so they keep the almost 100 mill upfront and get to sell it completely again, say to Balsillie for 200.
One thing Place knows is how to make a buck.
Coach agree re Koules but he had to sell his soul to put the deal together which meant bringing in Barrie.
Barrie is smarter than everybody, quite apart from the disaster he created on the ice and impending financial disaster facing the team.
Posted by: PD | December 22, 2008 at 04:39 PM
Davidson was very shrewd, selling this franchise when he did. The azzclowns from OK Hockey are going to lose a ton of money this year. When you combine a lousy economy, a lousy product on the ice, high ticket prices and no playoffs, it leads to major cash losses. I wouldn't be surprised if mid week crowds get down to 10-12 thousand people. Can't really feel bad for them, this was their own doing.
Posted by: brendan | December 22, 2008 at 04:18 PM
My apologies PD. At first reading, I took your comment as your true feelings. Missed the sarcasm. Silly me, I should have known better.
Explanation received and understood. Agreed with by the way.
Posted by: Sarasota Bill | December 20, 2008 at 06:18 PM
But he leads your team in points.
Does not make him a leader.
Posted by: Badbud | December 20, 2008 at 01:45 PM
I think letting Jussi go is a mistake. I also think if he had more productive players around him, he would be more productive. For Jussi, no matter what team picks him up, he be on one with a better record.
As each day passes, the Lightning become even more of a joke. I truly feel sorry for the players. Playing for the Lightning has to feel like you are a top notch guy in your field and a high school kid is running the operation, calling the shots.
Could this be a new movie, the NHL version of Major League?
I wouldn't be surprised if the OK Azz Klowns drive around with in a pick up looking for out of work hockey players. I can here them saying "hey buddy, can you skate? Cool, jump in and you'll get $50 to play tonight."
The OK Azz Klowns make Congress look like they know what they are doing.

We reduced our full season XO tickets to only a half season this year.
Next year they will not get one dime from us. This ownership has not a clue on how to run a successful franchise. They are killing a brand that the Davidson Group worked to build.

Jussi played well his first month of the season, but lately you don't hear his name at all on the broadcasts...
Posted by: Boltflasher | December 19, 2008 at 11:42 PM
Coach Bill, I know that you can't "develop" a leader...but it's the only hope the Lightning have right now for a Captain. Do you really think Vinny is going to give up the C? P.S. Will there be a blogger happy hour before the Dec. 30 game against the Habs? It's the only game I'm in town for.
Posted by: mike p | December 19, 2008 at 11:09 PM
Jussi - has been a real bust this year. It is obvious the org is planning for next year and making moves to move players and free up resources.
Vinny - He is still hurting the physical part of his game is not up to par. Which in turn impacts his scoring. Maybe next year I don't know.
Marty - He is the bait at the deadline for 'D' and real 'D'. If they blow t his one it's really over.
Smith - Keeper makes the Father in-law happy.
Joker Derby - Homerun Derby whatever. It is a Bettman embarrassment to hockey. I equate this to play a baseball game for 9 innings, play one extra inning and then have a home run derby to decide the game. Oh no that's hockey.
last night - It is the 1st time in my 12+ years of being at tampa games on a regular basis that the fans have filled the ice with bottles, paper and plastic cups. Good thing the seats where bolted to the floor. On most nights I leave at the end of OT - However, with the Father in-law in tow we stayed.
Go boltss

Sarasota Bill, I have long thought I was the only one without the bong here.
Certainly was a satirical lampoon at the many who have vastly overated the Bolts from day one.
That was the same day I said they werent't better just different.
Hell they may be worse than last year as the Len Barrie chemistry experiment unfolds.
Leo, much as they should strip pouty V$ of the C it would be a team PR nightmare, so he is safe.
Totally disagree that he would disappear , he cashes his 10 million dollar paychecks regularly and the boys in the room would hold him accountable.
BTW, Grabs has more goals than your Artistes, Tangies and Langies too. Not bad for a rook.
Posted by: PD | December 19, 2008 at 10:06 PM
I simply don't get this. The guy is in a scoring slump, but to put him on waivers, i.e., give him away? Come on.
Posted by: Mike13 | December 19, 2008 at 08:54 PM
Don't you worry leo, nobody is taking away Vinny's C away. He's not the best captain but they are not going to take it away. Regardless of what people may say on the blog, they CANNOT take the C away. I agree the team needs Vinny. So, we have to work with that now and develop his leadership abilities. I don't care about people's views on if you are born a leader or develop it because we don't have any choice or say in the matter now...we can only hope to develop Vinny.
Posted by: mike p | December 19, 2008 at 07:32 PM
Fine,
Take the C away. What do I care?
Guaranteed he disappears if you do, on and off the ice. And THEN, where will you be?
I'm not disagreeing that he might not be the best "leader of men" this planet has ever seen. I give you that.
But he leads your team in points. He also has more points than Our Artistes, Tangies and Langies, who are playing very well.
So grab ahold of yehselves and put things into perspective: if you take his C away, you will INSULT him.
Why are we even debating this? He got Tortie off the team; think he's gonna stand for being embarassed like THAT?
Please remember: You need V4 MORE than he needs you.

And don't bring up the "did it in the past" argument, cuz that was different. He was young and unprepared for the role.
Now he is older and guess what?
Still Unprepared for the role.
Posted by: Badbud | December 19, 2008 at 06:48 PM
Vinnie STILL isn't prepared for the role leo. Not hard to be the primary weapon when mainly all you do is stand around waiting for everyone to pass you the puck. Maybe if he wasn't such a prima dona he would actually throw hits & fight for pucks instead of standing waiting for the puck to come loose. Used to like him till turned into a wuss that seems afraid to hit people.

Well done VOTT! Very well done!
PD, with all due respect, gotta get some clarification on this one.
Jussi, yet another player that many here thought could be traded for a starting top 4 dman.
Posted by: PD | December 19, 2008 at 02:39 PM
A little Holiday humor? Jussi for a top 4 d-man? I can't stop laughing here. We better fire everyone for not getting Pronger for him. It was a joke right?
If not, please pass the bong!
Posted by: Sarasota Bill | December 19, 2008 at 06:29 PM
If you take the C away from V4, you may as well trade him, cuz it'll have the same effect.
And don't bring up the "did it in the past" argument, cuz that was different. He was young and unprepared for the role.
Now, he's a man. He SAID that he was proud and honored to assume the captaincy of the club. He SAID it!
Think he'll play BETTER without the C on his shirt NOW???
Changing Cs won't fix what's ailin' this club.
It'll only sabotage what's left COMPLETELY. Unless of course, V4 is NOT the prime offensive weapon of your club?

Paul Ranger needs to be put on waivers. On Avs goal, he was a spectator 1 foot away from Stasny(sp) and he gave up countless turnovers in the defensive zone. What does the coaching staff see in this stiff? Ranger is just a bloody awful D man and needs to be put out to pasture.

Change coaches, add associate coaches, send someone down to the AHL, send someone up from the AHL, hire a guy from free agency, trade a player, put one on waivers, rehire players lost on the waiver wire, change assistant captaincies, etc., etc., etc.
It does not seem to make any difference any more. Prior to the halfway mark, the Lightning are out of the race for the playoffs and opposing players start salivating at the prospect of finding them ahead on their schedules.
There seems to be no respect to the Bolts afforded by the NHL, by the opponents, and CERTAINLY by the referees.
We find headstrong new first-time owners, a completely inexperienced GM (never served as even an Assistant GM or a manager of any kind for a hockey team), and a head coach with no head coaching experience. Could anyone (even the most sanguine and dedicated Lightning supports) logically expect results unlike the ones that have developed over the course of this wretchedly anguished season?
If someone wrote the story of this season as a fictional novel, readers would find the story to be incredibly nonsensical.

I don't understand this move at all. Even if Roberts and Koci come back, with Ramo and Jokinen going back to the minors, they are 1 under the 23 player roster. Do they plan on bringing someone else up before midnight tonight? If they don't, this move made no sense.
Posted by: mike p | December 19, 2008 at 05:23 PM
With this move I am officially over this ownership and front office. I have been open-minded, defended them on occasion, but I can finally agree that they come off like a bunch of clueless chumps. Are they just throwing darts at the wall?
Posted by: fogelberg | December 19, 2008 at 05:21 PM
Come on this is getting ridiculous, how can they ever learn team chemistry if someone is booted every week??? Halpern should have got the "C", I'm losing faith in Vinny
Posted by: Boyd | December 19, 2008 at 03:52 PM
I had high hopes for Jussi when he came over and although he had a good start this year he has been wavering a little lately. That is no reason to send him packing but in the long run I am glad we kept him over Ouellet.
Just wonder when Arty will be on the chopping block.
Posted by: Brian | December 19, 2008 at 03:33 PM
Jokinen is a pretty versatile player, when he's playing well. And our cup does not exactly runneth over with offense right now. Not really getting this move.
Pd, you're over the top as usual. It's not classless to demote a player who isn't producing. Cheerlead for the leaves on your own forum, where they care.

Think that likely reads midnight tonight PSP, but rather classless I'd say.
First thing Burke did when he got to Toronto was to tell them that no one would be moved until after xmas and that was a couple of weeks ago.

How was he placed on waivers at noon Friday when the holiday roster freeze started at midnight?

play the fantasy league the same way, but this is real and absolutely dumb move!
On the other hand we dont need him now we need a better player for him but we have nothing from this hockey operation!!!
If you bring kovalcuk or spezza then I will agree with you "srekcuf"!
