Young Guns camp ends, Alex Killorn stands out and other tidbits
Alex Killorn said he understands that Lightning prospects were not, technically, being evaluated during the week-long Young Guns camp at the St. Pete Times Forum. Then again, as he said, "Every time you go on the ice, when you have a GM in the crowd and owners in the stands, there's always going to be a close eye on you. So, every time you can do something to stand out, it's always great for your career."
Killorn, 19, a center, did his part with two goals during Saturday's scrimmage and a work ethic and focus that got him noticed. Defenseman Luke Witkowski and forward Matt Marshall also had standout camps. But Killorn perhaps was a step ahead.
"He just plays the game with his head up," GM Brian Lawton said. "He fits what I was talking about, guys who are willing to go into traffic areas to make plays. They're not bashful about it. (Dana Tyrell and Carter Ashton also fit that bill.) It's one thing we really want to upgrade on our existing team."
Killorn won't be in a Lightning uniform any time soon, or perhaps even signed. He still has three seasons left at Harvard, and as Lawton said, "We're not going to be an organization that pushes people out of school."
Teams have the rights to college players for four years. Killorn was drafted 107th overall in 2007.
Other points to remember:
Lawton said the Lightning will hold a prospects camp at the Times Forum just before the opening of training camp. Lawton said 19 players will be invited. Training camp for the big club begins Sept. 12.
Lawton said the team will not have an ECHL affiliate next season. In fact, because of financial constraints, it will have only 20 contract players at AHL Norfolk. Lawton said the rest of the roster will be filled out with loaner players from other organizations. Riku Helenius and Dustin Tokarski will be the goaltenders. If Tampa Bay signs draftee goalie Jaroslav Janus, he perhaps could be loaned out to an ECHL team to get playing time. The same plan would apply to any players the Lightning determined needed more playing time that he was getting at Norfolk.
The arbitration hearing for defenseman Matt Smaby is July 28. The sides can continue negotiating until that time. Smaby, given a qualifying offer of $660,000/$65,000, is seeking a one-way contract.

Morning Peeps,
I just read that Barrie has an extension and has to sign off on all player desicions that are completed.
I also read that he still owes OK for monies that he could not pay last year. Dude evreyone knows you do not sell a car to a friend or for that matter lend money to a friend.
I would say from this example that one should not venture into business with friends either. I guess this is whom flip flop was referring to all last seasson.
As I have said countless times on this blog all businesses in todays economic turmoil are having problems. To add to that I think 5000 people for the young guns camps was a great testiment to hockey in Florida.
Coach Bill sorry the imposter is back. Trust me when I say that we know when it is you or not. The wallbangers would not make that mistake.
Hope all is well with everyone. Chic is busy starting her new travel rec team in addition to the rec division in Brandon. Team Amber Bock rules....
Go Bolts see you all on the Oct 8th at the wall. Looking forward to catching up with the peeps.

Coach Bill,
Let it be said a man that opens his heart to people who agree, is nice, to those who do not agree, is strongest. I have had the same inklings that PD would be different if he was given the open door. Oh well...

This post is to all Lightning fans, who post here. The impostor, the shrink, etc. have consistently shown up on this blog site, at this time of the year, for as long as I can remember; and there is absolutely no question that PD is a direct part of it. Over the YEARS, it has basically been the same; and PD and the impostor foils basically try and take over the focus of this blog, by their agitating and attach posts. Every year, the same back and forth, with PD and the foils, happens; and many good knowledgeable TB hockey fans have just stop blogging here, because of it. I for one don't want to read what these game players are saying, nor quite frankly the responses to them. To me, this blog should be predominately a TB Lightning site, which is why we fans are here in the 1st place; and playing into someone's games only retracts from that.
If someone is posting under your name, turn them in to the Times; and, if you have to, simply post it wasn't you. That's it. Responding, more than that, only plays into their sick games and spurs them on. Does anyone really believe that they actually care about what any Lightning fans are saying or posting here? To them, it's all/only about the agitation game they are playing, nothing more. Why give them the time of day, much less the time it takes to post responses to them?
Coach Bill, I love you man; but, you really need to ask yourself, does it make sense to keep giving PD the benefit of the doubt. He doesn't deserve it, never has. Why would such a die hard Leaf's fan, and obvious Lightning detractor, keep posting here, day-in and day-out, which he has done for years and years, well before you even starting posting here? Why isn't he blogging away, on all of the great Leaf sites out there? You know the real answer, as well as I do; and the Leaf's, nor the Lightning for that matter, have nothing to do with it.

whoopsi- touched a little nerve there two way center? maybe I agree, maybe I don't...that's the whole point- Alot of things make me an expert, whats holding you back?
Posted by: coachdave | July 17, 2009 at 03:59 PM
Ok, Damian, what's the latest on OK? Today is the day LB is to have his $10M check in and made payable to the NHL. Will this money go into escrow to make sure it is spent only on expenses of the team and to be monitored by the NHL or what? This amount sounds like Vinny's salary! We want to hear the latest on the continuing soap opera of the OK group since this money will affect the team.
What's the latest on signing the defense coach. I believe you had reported that Lawton said he would have something positive to discuss today. We are all waiting for this very important position to be filled and would like to know the status.

I just read on TSN that Cory Murphy signed a 2-way deal with the NJ Devils.
Posted by: Mike13 | July 17, 2009 at 01:02 PM
PD,
I am also not a betting man, but I will bet you Bolts will finish higher than the leafs as well. Loser can't post for 2 weeks after it's been mathematically determined that one team will finish higher than the other. Not posting includes not posting under any name or getting any one to post on your behalf. You game?

Don you are on my man.
Posted by: PD | July 17, 2009 at 11:23 AM
Let me guess coachdave. Your kid plays on some local team and that makes you an expert. Hold on guys, coachdave does not agree... Pffftttt
Olin, Lightning fans do not instigate that junk. When someone speaks up in defense of our team it is not cool to shoot them down and compare them to children. IMO
Posted by: 2WayCenter | July 17, 2009 at 10:06 AM
yeah I second that- some of the comments are way off track and pointless, not even about hockey-
Posted by: coachdave | July 17, 2009 at 08:34 AM
......Ya know, and I really hate to say this and probably should keep it to myself, but ya'all sound like a bunch of children on a playground fighting with each other. What happened to HOCKEY here? I'm on a singles site Plenty of Fish , and not many talk HOCKEY there, and I am bummed they do not,(they don't know)how great a sport it is, but to read what I've read since my last post about Hedman, you guy's sound like kid's, little kid's argueing ...nah-nah-nah-nah, my team is better than your team. C'mon gang let's all be friend's/adult's here and talk HOCKEY, it's what we all enjoy. Bring on the Leaf-Bolt game, settle these squabbles then. Just my 2 cent's worth....GO BOLT'S
Again, my personal thank's(tack se myket) to Damian for keeping us all informed with up to date information of our Bolt's...Good Job Damian, keep it up.

Coach...I really don't need any defending from you. when it comes to the blogs, you're the seventh man in that regard.
You also seem to be oblivious that the (im)poster--whomever it was--made his point without it mattering whether or not I have a wife. Are you that limited, my "friend?"
Posted by: Casper | July 17, 2009 at 07:52 AM
Coach Bill’s impostor posted at 1:40 pm and ten minutes later flip flopping Petty Dinero echoes the tripe? When called out on it there is no rebuttal? The schitzo was content for once, with his ‘moment of eloquence’? LOL
Truly, we are engaging a loser’s loser. I’m off that sick sauce.
Take his bait, and engage/enable at your own peril. If the loser/impostor thinks “It wasn't very extreme”, or no big deal, then there is either TypePad impunity or unfathomable assets at one’s disposal.
The assets and that haughty attitude for eluding detection can next be used for something nefarious, like identity theft.
Answer up and enable this whacko troll at your own peril, folks.
Ignore, and he baits a few more times and then blows.
Posted by: Casper | July 16, 2009 at 11:50 PM
PD, So you're saying you rooted for the coach, not the team? I guess since you're a transplant, I shouldn't be surprised. I bled the black and gold from 1965-1990 through Mass, upstate NY, Germany, and Mass again but have been on the Bolts bandwagon since day one, even through the blurry faxes and horrable on ice products. I am not a betting man, having given that up many years ago, but I would bet you a pair of seats for the game of your choice during the 10-11' season, as close to the glass as could be gotten or wherever you choose that the Bolts finish higher than the Leafs this season. While the Leafs scored considerably better than the Bolts last season, I think it would be foolish to expect a repeat performance since they lost Andropov, Moore and Kubina, 3 of their top scorers last year. Who did we lose? Pettinger, Welch, Ward and Gratton.
Posted by: Don in St. Pete | July 16, 2009 at 10:10 PM
PD, another thing I just discovered using the very cool stats on NHL.com...
While TOR outscored TBL 244 goals vs. 207 (37G diff), they also allowed more goals than the Bolts 286 vs. 269 (27G diff).
TOR was outscored 93 to 63 in the 1st period, compared to the Bolts being outscored 79 to 67.
TOR was outscored 102 to 83 in the 2nd period, compared to the Bolts being outscored 99 to 74.
TOR outscored their opponents 94 to 85 in the 3rd stanza, compared to the Bolts being outscored 83 to 64.
Clearly, the Bolts had significant issues in the 3rd period last season (which was the main contributor to the goal differential between the two teams), but the Leafs weren't so much better overall that you should be boasting about it.
Yes, the Leafs were 10th in scoring last year. But they were 30th in goals against. The Bolts were tied for 24th in goals for and 27th in goals against.
Posted by: Mike13 | July 16, 2009 at 10:10 PM
PD, scoring in the AHL isn't exactly the same is it? Tlusty had 25G (66 pts) in 66 games.
Alex Giroux (who won the AHL scoring title) had 60G (97 pts) in 69 games. Should we assume that the scoring phenom, Giroux, will be lighting up the NHL next year? If that's the case, why then is he still a UFA?
Bochenski was once a prolific scorer in the AHL as well, scoring 33G (66 pts) in 35 games a couple of years back. He didn't exactly light the lamp at will in the NHL either.
It's all-good that you're stoked that the Leafs have a young team with lots of upside. But that doesn't mean that they're going to deliver.

Big time with Torts Don
Not a chance you pass Toronto.
Posted by: PD | July 16, 2009 at 09:04 PM
PD, Why beat a dead horse to death. It will all be settled one way or the other tomorrow. I'm not worried either way. I like what the Bolts have done this off season. While I respect the moves Burke has made, I believe the Bolts will be better, so if the Leafies make the show they'll be able to look up a couple spots in the standings and see the Bolts. I thought you told me once you were a Lightning fan?
Posted by: Don in St. Pete | July 16, 2009 at 09:00 PM
Heh coach, matters not..point is you or anyone one else could have held the same point. It wasn't very extreme.
Posted by: PD | July 16, 2009 at 08:45 PM
Mike13 Tlusty lit it up in the AHL last year. 5 goals one game.
Leafs scored a lot more goals than the Bolts with Kids.
Posted by: PD | July 16, 2009 at 08:42 PM
Call me crazy, but I'm thinking that Lecavalier, St.Louis, Stamkos, and Malone is a better top 4 than Blake, Ponikarovsky, Stajan, and Grabovski.
Posted by: Mike13 | July 16, 2009 at 08:39 PM
PD, the Leafs (Leaves?) top 4 forwards are:
Jason Blake, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Matt Stajan, and Mikhail Grabovski. Tlusty has 10G & 10A in his 70+ games in the NHL. If you include him as a top 3 forward for the Leafs next year, then you have no room to criticize the Bolts.
Posted by: Mike13 | July 16, 2009 at 08:35 PM
PeeDee you crack me up. What if LB shows up with $10mil tomorrow, what if he doesn't? Matters not. But seriously, if we had said last year that Stammer was gonna be a top 3 forward you would have cackled...oh wait you did...yet we should not laugh when you tout Kadri in your top forwards? DUDE?
He out pointed Tavares at the end? Maybe Tav was drawing all the attention, nah that can't be it.
V4 is still here and they are filling our holes regardless Hmmmm, odd very odd. With a competent D perhaps our V4, MSL and Stevie will have more room and time to work. It could happen. Who do the leafs have on their first two lines again? HAhahahahahahahahaha!

Posted by: Herb | July 16, 2009 at 05:11 PM
Zero, Vinny is still there in part because of Bolts total dysfunctional managment group. All had to agree on a trade.
That should be solved tomorrow.
Posted by: PD | July 16, 2009 at 04:28 PM
PD - Hi. Vinny is still here (and they can't move him unless he wants out), yet they're still adding pieces.
Did Koules not get the memo stating he doesn't want to spend money? And is he not aware that they're looking for 2nd line help for Vinny (who, again, is still here)?
Posted by: ZERO | July 16, 2009 at 04:07 PM
Uhhh, could care less about the buds and what they're doing, hopefully not much so we can pound up on em. Smaby is absolutely correct to file for arbitration, the two way offer from the team just a financial attempt to save coinage- my guess is smaby wins arbitration easily, and gets 750k oneway- then he makes the roster, and all is well. Mezz isn't going anywhere and will almost for sure play in our top 4- still can't figure what the signing of Krajiceck is all about-
Posted by: coachdave | July 16, 2009 at 03:51 PM
Don they did that last year too..overspent then chopped.
Zero the whole premise of the V$ trade was because they couldn't afford him and Koules wanted a manageable cap..hello.
Since Koules is the guy who is paying for everything then he gets to call the number.
Posted by: PD | July 16, 2009 at 03:33 PM
Heh Don that crew finished in the top 10 league scoring..Bolts with Vinny Marty Stevie et all..24th.
You have no idea who Jiri Tlusty is or Nick Kulemin..they have a lot of young guns.
Kadri was rated ahead of Duchane by many at the end. He both played and outpointed Tavares, his teammate, down the stretch.
Posted by: PD | July 16, 2009 at 03:27 PM
PD, Coach Bill is a personal friend of mine, so I know he didn't post that. While Kadri will be a player, I don't believe he would start on any other NHL team out of Camp. Leaf's basically have a bunch of prospects and some grinders plus Grabowski, Poni and Blake for the forward lines. I don't think they'll be scaring many teams with their offensive attack. The constant harping on the Bolt Salary issues seems moot with them spending in the $50mil range, and bringing in real talent on the back end.
Posted by: Don in St. Pete | July 16, 2009 at 03:16 PM
PD - When did Koules say he wanted payroll in the low 40s? And please don't point to Romano's column a few weeks ago.

Ajax ...Ticket prices are cheaper too thanks to these "idiot" new owners.....
cheapest prices in the league is not a good thing..costs do not go down preportionatly.
Having lagging tixsales not a good thing.
Leafs 3 best forwards are Gravboski, Tlusty and NazKadri. Bozak would be close to that group. If they accept Kessel for Kaberle then thats another with a good draft last year and this year.
Best D is Beauchemin
Schen2
Komasarek 3

Casper, You couldn't of said it any better...but why not listen to your own advice from here on out...ignore the negative rants...Petty Dinero (I like flipflop better) always sees the thunderstorms on a rainy day....yet if a hurricane hit Toronto he would post, God knew we needed the rain.....let's see Toronto has there best forward as a 36yr old wing with 174 career goals and while they have shored up their D a bit (how could it get any worse) the best guy is Kaberle?? Ya mean the same guy they have been shopping as over paid since last November?? Ha..HaHa....HaHaHa...and don't forget they still have Swiss Cheese Toskala between the pipes...what a joke...they go into the new season with a goalie that they pulled like 7 of 53 games...the fact that he only started 53 games when he was given the number 1 really says it all...he stunk...and didn't he have groin surgery in the offseason....groin surgery for a goalie.....doesn't give me the feelgoods no sir...anyway back to real life..In the NBA 23/30 teams have tapped the emrgency money fund...the cap in the NBA is suppose to be lower than the NHL....yet our owners are "idiots" for not using all there business savvy to put a winner on the ice...In the business world those guys are applauded and rest assure there are lots of zillionaires out there really working hard to secure their assests.....just like Barrie and Koules are doing.....It is amazing that they are so broke and still spending money on free agents...sort of defeats all the broke posts in a very simple way.....And for the 109th time for every single person on the blog......Two years ago the world was groovy...the stock market was at 13,000...no bubble....we had Brad and Danny and Torts and Feasty and the payroll at the time with all of these future Hall of Famers(lol) was a dismal 38 million by our beloved lame duck owners Crystal Palace Sports.....I have never seen two owners come in to a sinking ship....spend 10 million more than the previous owners to plug the gaping holes that were left....and be slammed by most of the reading public....I'll take the cowboys and their enthusaism (and faults) anyday over the dead beat owners who forgot about the franchise and the city and the fans for two straight years...P.S. Ticket prices are cheaper too thanks to these "idiot" new owners.....I guess some people will only be happy when they fail....like "flipflop"

Don if you are calling the coach bill post at 140 the work of the impostor.
How do you know thats a fake?
Quite apart from that, is a crashing salary cap something you need to keep quiet news? Kuoules already said he wants a reasonable cap number closer to 40 than 50. And that's the right model for the market I think.
Problem is that they are already pushing 50.
Posted by: PD | July 16, 2009 at 02:28 PM

Posted by: PD | July 16, 2009 at 01:50 PM
Why do we continuously enable this doom and gloom hawker?
All his sputum is financial flatulence with the luxury of spinelessly pointing to some wealthy, albeit idiotic and long suffering hockey market.
If LB comes up MT tomorrow, guess what? No chopping needed, OK just doesn’t have to split the take with anybody until a new Warbucks arrives.
58 days until first whistle on ice; longer perhaps, perhaps not, for Oren to find a new dancing partner. W.G.A.S.? These guys have sharpies always looking for parachutes.
You leave Mr. Petty Dinero out of the hockey talk and he dries up and blows. You take his bait and answer up, or otherwise engage him one time and we all have to scrape our shoes and wipe our keyboards for a frickin week.
Capisci?

Posted by: Steve-O | July 16, 2009 at 12:49 PM
Right on OldTimer..it's much more significant than a 7th D man.
If Barrie comes MT tomorrow, I would think Bettman grants full control to Koules.
Koules wants the payroll in the low 40's...crickets from the Koolies.
Posted by: PD | July 16, 2009 at 12:49 PM
PD,
True. That is a big meeting tomorrow. I wonder what happens if Barrie cannot secure the 10 million that Commissioner Napolean demanded?
If Barrie is jettisoned from the picture does Koules start cutting payroll?
If he does secure the 10 Million than can he and Koules co-exist?
Does Napolean have the final say on all of this?
A lot of possibilites. Hopefully Ramen will get us some answers! (lol)
Posted by: oldtimer | July 16, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Oldtimer, You can add Jim Schoenfield to that list as well.
Casper, You have to love Lundin's postioning in the defensive zone, he's our best d at that critical strength. On the other hand it's not in his makeup to stop the rush at the blueline, which can lead to transition opportunities and reduces enemy zone time. Lashoff has huge issues in his d zone positioning and coverage. Krajicek also has good zone coverage, he's just far too soft. We have some great d prospects in the system, let's hope they can continue to develop and that the Bolts sign a d coach ASAP!
Posted by: Don in St. Pete | July 16, 2009 at 11:51 AM
Magnussen was a great captain.
I grew up a Hawk fan
Strange no one has commented on the Bolts financial meeting tonorrow and it's significant implications.
Posted by: PD | July 16, 2009 at 11:45 AM
I can’t easily explain why, but I agree with old psycho-boy Tortorella and have unfounded faith in the ability of Mike Lundin. He plays a safe, smart game. But, not as a 185 pounder in this League; 200-205 and now we’re talking. He shoved people and they swatted him away. I hope he addressed that issue this summer.
IMHO, Meszaros is a guy I’d prefer to play against. I watched some taped games and just squirmed at his play for us. Ranger was his same old vague self, and Smaby was a genuine war hero the way he hung in there.
Krajicek was a trajicek and we won’t get Jersey Jim or I cranked up about Murphy again. The kids will be okay and the other rentals are mercifully gone.
So I like a D-corps of Ohlund, Smaby, Hedman, Lundin, Ranger, Walker/Foster, with Lashoff on the Norfolk shuttle.
See how nice that looks with no Krajicek and Mezz?
Now if we can just replace Elmer Fudd as defense coach, we may keep goals against under 220 and open up the offense a tad.
I would also expect to see Ty Wishart the soonest, come early 2010. That is unless Wish and Mihalik really start something at Norfolk and form a ‘band of brothers’ coming up together a year from now. Ultimately, wouldn’t we like to see a clued in (re: coached) defcorps of Hedman, Wishart, Mihalik, Ranger, Lundin, Lashoff, Quick, Jackson, Witkowski, etc? That’s what it’s all about eh? Develop them, pay whom you can, jettison whom you cannot for picks to develop more and just keep re-loading.
Who dem defense coaches? Duh.

(I hated Schultz and Vic Hatfield too…)
Go Bolts!

Randy,
Thanks also for the info on Smaby. I hope they give him the 1-way that he deserves.
Don,
Mags was also my favorite not to play for my guys (The NY Blueshirts) He was great fun to watch. I remember that he used to block a TON of shots in front of Tony Esposito. I recall a game where he took one in the mouth and shattered his jaw. He then played the next game with a football style helmet! It was too funny.
As a kid watching hockey in the 60's & 70's I loved the tough guys. Nick Fotiu, Wayne Cashman, Jerry Korab, Magnusson and even the always hated Dave Schultz!
Cheers to the good old days!

Don,
Thought you might like that news! There have to be more moves coming, I don't think we'll see any movement for a while though. I'm hoping we hear news on a D coach next.
Posted by: Randy C | July 16, 2009 at 10:11 AM
Wow, no ECHL team eh? Down here in Naples, we're pretty crazy about our Florida Everblades, whom have a joint affiliation with both the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers. At the NHL Board of Governors meeting that took place in Naples a few months ago, we all hoped the Lightning would have been able to swindle the Everblades away from the Panthers.
But, if its simply a monetary issue, then I suppose I can live with that. It'd be nice to see some Bolts prospects in a Blades uniform.
Posted by: BrianB23 | July 16, 2009 at 10:11 AM
Randy, Thanks for that post you made my day. You have to believe that Smaby would be the perfect partner for Hedman and/or Foster as both are more offensively inclined, and he'll have their back. I have to believe they are trying to move one of more of their extra d not especially since they already have at least 4 signed to play at Norfolk ( Jackson, Quick, Wishart and Mihalik ). With Ohlund, Foster, Hedman. Mezsaros and Ranger all capable offensively of moving the puck and playing the point on the power play, I have to believe Krajicek and Lashoff are expendable, and that Lunding may be kept as the depth guy to call up from Norfolk. As I mentioned last night there are several teams looking for help on defense, including the Bruins, Penguins, Jackets and Preds amongst others.
