Kevin Costner Speaks out on Hollywood Writers' Strike -- But He Doesn't Say Much

My buddy Tom Jones on the Times sports staff shot me this quote from Kevin Costner during his Tampa Bay stop speaking up on the writer's strike. Here's Mr. Bull Durham's insights on the current work outage:

"In every business, people feel like they want a fair shake. People do things because they love to do it. Writers write because they love to write. They're tortured souls. But they've found what they want to do. And if you ask all of them 10 or 15 years ago, if they would write for free or for scale, they would raise their hand and say, "Yes, I would.'' But now they have families they they have to look out for. The economics are such that even though they love what they do, they need to paid. If they feel like someone else is making a lot of money and they're not included, like any of us, they have an ego and they want to be a part of that.  And I think they should."
