John Edwards' mistress raised in Ocala
This proves the old joke I tell everyone about how every big news event somehow has roots in Florida: John Edwards mistress Rielle Hunter was raised Lisa Druck in Ocala, Fla.
According to this exquisitely detailed story in the Star-Banner, Druck/Hunter was the daughter of an Ocala attorney, James D. Druck, who as implicated in a scam involving horses killed for their insurance money. Of course, one of the first horses supposedly killed in this deal was a horse Rielle/Lisa rode in competition.
Also according to this piece, Hunter/Druck attended the University of Tampa after leaving Ocala, departing from the college in 1984. Eventually, she married a lawyer in Beverly Hills named Alexander Hunter and changed her name to Rielle. All the horse stuff seems to have happened in the early 90s, when she was already gone; according to the story, James Druck died in Tampa in 1992.
Here's a Newsweek story which seems to sum up Hunter's unique personality.
I'm beginning to think this some kind of Karmic fate -- or the area's historic attraction to, um, unique personalities...

Unique personality - that's being kind. She seems like a nut.

Hmm.. it's the ubiquitous "We've discovered a Bay Area Connection" or "Local Ties tonight to the John Edwards scandal." Can't you just hear the local anchors saying that?
