Today's fall TV picks: 'Gary Unmarried,' 'Knight Rider'
I hate to look like a shill for CBS, but this will be the second day I recommend a CBS show for viewing tonight, amid a flood of eight new shows joining the network TV lineup tonight. And that show is Jay Mohr's new sitcom, Gary Unmarried, debuting at 8:30 tonight on WTSP-Ch. 10.
I know my pal Steve Spears loves the new Knight Rider also debuting tonight; for me, the awkward, incongruous cast can't quite paper over the show's ludicrous premise and nonsensical action sequences (of course there's a crisis requiring the hunky lead actor and the female character he wants to hook up with to take off their clothes inside the super-intelligent car!).
But Mohr's comedy about a divorced dad trying to start a new relationship with a woman who is also a divorced single parent is the only comedy pilot this fall that actually made me laugh on purpose. Mohr has always been a great comedic talent who made unfortunate choices in material, from the Fox Hollywood spoof Action to NBC's low-rated standup comedy competition, Last Comic Standing.
This show is, at least, funny on its face, with Mohr's talent for wisecracking amplified by show biz veteran Paula Marshall -- another talented actor who keeps landing in ill-fated new shows. Check out a behind-the-scenes bit here. Compare Knight Rider and Gary Unmarried by clicking below:
