See me chat live with cartoonist Ted Rall about the New York Post cartoon at 1:15 p.m.

The good folks at the Poynter Institute have quickly pulled together a live chat between me and cartoonist Ted Rall, president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, on the infamous New York Post cartoon which some say compares President Obama to a chimp gunned down by police.

So far, I've written a blog post, discussed this on Twitter, Facebook and National Public Radio, and I've found an even split : Half the people I speak to think it's obviously racially insensitive, and the other half don't. And neither side can understand why the other side doesn't see things their way. Read Rall's take on the issue here.

View the chat in real time right here. It starts at 1:15 p.m.

please do us a favor and put down the arooowhowhowho hand book, stop leaning on the NWACP's back woods thinking, and get a life. Everyone (with basic intelligence)knows that the new bill looks like a monkey drew it up. Ever heard of the term so easy a monkey can do it. Or so messed up it?s like a monkey F?ing a football. Why? Because monkeys are clumsy.

Miranda

Oh please. It is not racist.

The only racism are from those who support Obama based only his race instead of his politics. How come anybody who does not support Obama is automatically called racist? Just a bunch of sheeple. We will see what happens in two years just how many of the sheeple are reelected.

So much for free speech. I guess that is reserved only for Obama supporters. Everyone else can be quiet or be accused of being racist.

La'Gia,
There was a full length movie made of the murder of a sitting president...George W. Bush...most people (media) didn't seem to care. This cartoon is satire! It's a dig at Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the idiots writing the stimilus package for the Pres. Read up on it.

Click on the link to Ted's reaction, and you'll see a story explaining much of the issue.

La'Gia

Thanks for the correction Eric - where can we see the full story on who created The New York Post cartoon?

kris

take the cartoon for what it is, and not what you are looking for.

it was a trained monkey that was shot... Perhaps the artist was trying more to convey disapointment in the awful stimulus package; meaning it was so bad a trained monkey could have created it.

Perhaps my opinion is way off, and the artist just happens to be a racist.

Wish I was here in time for the live chat.

Eric Deggans

Just so you know, Ted didn't create the cartoon under discussion...

La'Gia

As a middle-aged white man, Rall said, "When I sit down and write anything related to race, I think long and hard before I do it."

He should have thought a LOT longer and a LOT harder on this one -

La'Gia

Yes is it racist and in very poor taste. Sure I saw former President George W. Bush portrayed as a monkey before - but never ever shot dead. Good grief - this is supposed to be funny? What is the world coming to?
