IRS getting an early start on rebate checks
President Bush said this morning that rebates will start going out Monday, four days earlier than previously announced. The first rebates will go out by direct deposit to taxpayers who included bank account information on their tax returns and whose returns were processed by April 15. About 7.7-million people are expected to get their rebates electronically. The IRS plans to start mailing paper checks May 9 and complete the first wave of mailings by July 11. People who filed later will get their rebates later. In fact it's not too late to file a 2007 return and get a rebate.
Rebates range from $300 to $600 for singles and $600 to $1,200 to joint filers, plus $300 for each child under 17.
Here's the rebate delivery schedule originally announced by the IRS.

St. Petersburg Times personal finance editor Helen Huntley writes about money topics and answers questions about financial planning, investments and personal income taxes.
I looked at the new schedule and according to it. I should have been one of the first to receive rebate check by direct deposit. I see someone said theirs is already in there but mine isn't...I thought they were just beginning to send them today...if I were getting mine would it have been in my account this morning?

I get a kick out of people who jump on things like this and say, in effect, they are too good, too smart, too rich, etc. to be involved, especially when they think it's all a scam. They'll also be the ones calling Social Security a Ponzi scheme. And they'll be first in line to get theirs.

Hey Eye on the Future, you can send me yours via Paypal if you don't want it. I'll go buy a shiny new HDTV with it. I sure would appreciate that. It would be nice to watch baseball, NASCAR, and football in HD. C'mon, hook me up. You don't want it, I sure as heck would spend it in your place.

I'm not taking the rebate check. In the long run, it's not good for the economy and will only add to inflation. You can already see, the merchants have raised the prices on many things like food to take advantage of the consumer.

checks going out monday are electronic, and the may 9th date is for those that will be sent via snail mail.

Kitty,
Those who had their refunds direct deposited should be getting their checks direct deposited into their accounts by Monday, those that didn't have their refunds direct deposited (i.e., those that probably had to pay), will have to wait until May.

More like you can spend it on gas! Then the money goes right back in to Bush's pocket since he is knee deep in with the oil companies...
Maybe he's smarted then we all thought..LOL

WooHoo! I plan to use mine to pay my property insurance - well half of the insurance costs anyway.
That being said, I'm confused. The article states they plan to start sending out checks on Monday, four days earlier than planned. Then further into the paragraph it says the IRS plans to start mailing checks May 9 - two weeks from today. So, are the checks going to start going out on April 28 - eleven days early, or will the first checks be mailed May 5, which would make more sense if they were originally scheduled to be mailed on the 9th.
