Student burned in fire at High Point Elementary, airlifted to Tampa General

CLEARWATER — A High Point Elementary student was airlifted with burn injuries after a fire broke out at the school Wednesday afternoon.

The Largo Fire Department responded to the call around 2:20 p.m. and is still investigating the cause of the fire, said spokesman Terry Tokarz. A boy was transported by Bayflite to Tampa General Hospital’s burn center.

Tokarz said the boy’s father was on the scene and that the boy was "alert and talking to us."

The school was evacuated but no other students were in danger, Tokarz said. One teacher suffered minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital, he said.

The school at 5921 150th Ave. N near the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport had no structural damage. The fire was extinguished and students were allowed back in the building just before 3 p.m., in time for dismissal.

High Point’s principal, Michael Feeney, sent a message to school families.

"The school was evacuated to keep all students safe while the incident was addressed," the message said. "All students followed the proper procedures for an evacuation and dismissal was delayed by 15 minutes. There were many first responders on our campus."

The fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal and Pinellas County Schools Police, said school district spokeswoman Lisa Wolf. No further information was available Wednesday.

Wolf said High Point will resume normal school operations Thursday. Social workers and school counselors will be available to students, staff and parents in need.
