Robots can build cars, vacuum rooms and even diffuse bombs, but they also like to have a little bit of fun - which is why a group of Lego® robots and their student creators will engage in a friendly soccer match at USF’s College of Engineering on Wednesday to celebrate the end of a summer research program.
The college’s summer Research Experience for Undergraduates program culminates with a match between two teams of Mindstorms® NXT robots at 2 p.m. on Aug. 5 at the Hall of Flags in the Glenn A. Burdick Building Engineering Building (ENB) on USF Alumni Drive.

The Girlstories Theatre Project Powerstories serves hundreds of young
girls in the Tampa Bay area. Director Janice Creneti leads the middle school girls from diverse
backgrounds who attend a six-week summer drama intensive to prepare
them to perform for the general public and elementary school groups
during the year.
"Power Up - The Hero Within" is an original one-hour play with music and personal stories performed by middle school girls from the THE GIRLSTORIES THEATRE PROJECT.
The show is appropriate for all ages. The script was written by Fran Powers and Janice Creneti, musical direction by Janice Nepon-Sixt and choreography by Molly Parkes. The group recently received national
recognition from the President's Committee of the Arts and Humanities
as one of the top arts and humanities programs in the country.
In addition to an in depth theatre curriculum, the
project serves as the impetus to talk about important issues and to
educate girls about achieving their goals and dreams. While working on
individual self-esteem, the girls also work on team building activities
to form a cohesive, effective group. At the end of the summer a
one-hour play with four sections is created by staff and students.
The play takes place at the Ritz Ybor Theatre, 1503 7th Avenue. Tickets are $10 for general seating.
Tickets can be reserved by calling Powerstories Theatre at 813-286-2345, or by contacting Fran Powers at Fran@Powerstories.com.

NEW TAMPA — When Pride Elementary students go back to school next month, they will have a new leader. • In June, the Hillsborough County School Board picked Cindy Land, previously the assistant principal at Chiles Elementary, to succeed Jamie Johnson, who moved out of state. • The 38-year-old Pebble Creek resident takes over a school shrouded in controversy last year after Johnson allowed a 160-foot cell tower on the campus without public notice. • The episode strained relations between administrators and parents. Some threatened to pull their children out of Pride. • Land said she can't do much about the past, but believes all stakeholders should be at the table before any major decisions. She wants to hear from those stakeholders at 2 p.m. Aug. 24 in the school cafeteria. Until then, pull up a seat for the St. Petersburg Times' conversation with Land.
TAMPA — Teachers rarely tell students to play video games, but video games rarely teach algebra fundamentals.
So 20 students from Walker, Liberty and Ferrell middle schools have spent eight weeks factoring and cross multiplying equations in the program Dimension M.
It's all part of a summer pilot program that combines math skills with video games, culminating in a tournament today that pits gaming teams against each other.
"They don't even realize they are learning math," said Jen DeMik, who teaches seventh-grade mathematics at Liberty Middle, where the tournament is taking place.

From left, instructor Mike Spielberger spars with Thaer Sarsour while instructor Raz Sarsour works with Morgan Engdahl.
Mike Spielberger doesn't hate the UFC, he just disagrees with its personalities.
Most
anyone who follows those fights knows those Ultimate Fighting
Championships guys are hulking, brash and usually covered in tattoos.
Not at the Wesley Chapel Karate mixed martial arts class.
"UFC
and MMA is very popular right now," Spielberger said. "We teach it as
complete form of self defense, but we are very family orientated and we
don't promote 'Come on in and let's fight.' We have discipline."
