ResearchOne to Showcase Invention, Innovation and Discovery

The University of South Florida’s nationally-leading researchers will put their ingenuity on display during ResearchOne, a week-long celebration of cutting-edge science, Oct. 5-9.

USF researchers have much to celebrate given the university’s new record in total research awards of $380.4 million for 2008-2009. The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Almanac of Higher Education reports that USF as the fastest growing university in Federal Funds for Academic Research and Development from 2000-2007.

ResearchOne is designed to showcase the USF System’s research activities, highlighting the work of faculty and students in the life and material sciences, humanities, and the arts.  This year’s theme of “Innovation” recognizes the newly formed Academy of Inventors, whose inaugural class of more than 120 members includes USF faculty, alumni, students, and affiliates who have secured a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

“This will be an exciting week for our faculty and students.  It is an opportunity to showcase their successes and to engage the community in our research projects.” said Karen Holbrook, USF’s Vice President for Research and Innovation.

The week’s events will kick-off with “Innovation Day” on Monday and will feature the formal induction for the Academy of Inventors at noon. An exhibit of their inventions and patents will begin at 2 p.m.

On Thursday, USF Health will hold a special recognition ceremony for its researchers who have sought and won federal grants through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the stimulus bill.

Also included in the week’s highlights will be panel discussions and lectures on:

  • life sciences
  • global change
  • red tide
  • the reintegration of veterans into the workforce
  • research funding opportunities for faculty and students
  • national security concerns within academe and
  • science, technology and math education.

The next generation of leading researchers also will have an opportunity to exhibit their work with displays of recent projects by USF graduate students. Both faculty and students will be honored at an awards lunch on Friday.

A complete calendar of ResearchOne events can be found here.
