Surrealistic style still sells!
Have you read this week's Hot Spot ad about surrealistic ads and how we still use them today? Here are some surreal ads and a comic from the 7/24/08 Times. Can you identify what type of surreal treatment is being used? Try looking at ads from other days of the week, like Sunday, for even more surreal appeal! Use the comments bar below to tell us the day, page number and what the ad looks like and we will post it here! (Tip: You can click on pictures and they will appear in larger format.)

The NIE BLOGGING ZONE (or NBZ for short!) is a place to share your thoughts about whatever you read in Florida’s hottest newspaper: the St. Petersburg Times! School may be out for the summer, but here at NBZ you can keep up with the latest news and views of students all around Tampa Bay. If you have a burning topic to suggest, e-mail

On page Z2 on July 20th's edition, the comic for Luann talked about wearing "ginormous earrings" and if the models either purchase them at the jewelry store or Ace Hardware.
Here were some of the "earrings":
-Sterling silver saw blade earrings
-Gold plated trash can lid earrings
-14-carat furnace filter earrings

We had the opportunity to participate in an NIE workshop at a professional development at USF in Tampa presented by the Florida Digital Educator Program. We were charged with locating an advertisement that represented something that was surreal. In my search, I found a picture of a donut covered with ants. I immediately thought about using this picture as a writing prompt. What an exceptional opportunity for students!

As part of today's Florida Digital Educator training session, we were asked to search the paper for a surrealistic picture. It took me only a minute to locate a picture of Tampa's recent "Flutag" event. I found the picture of the aircraft doing a nosedive into the water surreal- and hilarious as well!
