The Jim Crow era
When Hurston was a child in the 1890s, a system of laws and regulations commonly referred to as “Jim Crow” emerged. Things have changed a lot since that time. We have some people who still have the old ways but, we have accomplished in following the words of Martin Luther King Jr. in the "I have a dream speech". We have achieved the point where "little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers". We have looked at our mistakes as the past. We have looked at MLK Jr., Rosa Parks, The freedom riders, and the freedom writers. This was a major step for out country.
