Episode #128: Foxwoods interviews
MAIN TOPIC
Chris got some awesome interviews while prowling around Foxwoods this month. Click here to hear the whole show, which includes interviews with:
- Bill Edler: When is he "Bill"? And when is he "William"? And man, he really loves his wife.
- Freddy Deeb: Chris' BFF talks about his big HORSE win, those colorful shirts and why the poker boom will never be over.
- Lee Childs: Ante Up's resident pro chats about how his life has changed now that he's on the pro tour, and why playing online is tougher than playing live.
- Eugene Todd: Trust us, you will be on the floor rolling after this interview, bro.
OTHER TOPICS
Episode guide: Many, many thanks to Ante Upper Nikademus, who's compiled an amazing resource of past Ante Up! shows. Click here to see it.
"Foreign" happenings: First, some U.S. congressmen are fightin' mad that the U.S. Trade Representative isn't asking them for help in dealing with the ongoing World Trade Organization disputes over online gambling. Also, Harrah's is pondering entering the online poker business in Europe.
Knockout tournaments: Don't call them "bounty" tournaments, Full Tilt says, but the online poker site has started "knockout" tournaments where you earn a prize every time you felt a player.
Hotline: Two great calls this week: one about dealing with a bad run of calls and one about unfortunate muckage. (Is that a word? I guess it is now).
Tampa Bay Poker Replay: Derby Lane has rolled out a number of changes, including later hours. Click here for the details.
HAND OF THE WEEK
Nick from Jersey phones in an audio HOTW.
In a $1/$2 no-limit game in an underground card room, he's looking at a $5 straddle and a mess of callers with his 4-4 on the button. He limps in, and hits his set on a flop of 4-5-J. Checked around to him, and he puts in a bet of $25, which chases everyone out but one.
The turn is a 9; he bets $65 and is check-raised to $165. With $320 left, he decides to call.
The river is a 5, and his opponent puts him all-in. Somehow he has the strength to lay this hand down. Good thing, too: His opponent had J-5.
NEXT WEEK'S SHOW
On a special Tuesday edition, Chip and Karina Jett visit the Ante Up! studios to tout One-Eyed Jack's Pros vs. Joes event and to talk about a whole lot more.
- SCOTT

Christopher Cosenza is co-host of the longest running poker podcast on the planet, Ante Up! He started playing poker seriously in 2003 and his favorite players are Phil Ivey and Kenna James, though he tends to act like Phil Hellmuth if you make a bad play against him.
Scott Long, Ante Up!'s other co-host, is the author of the monthly Bet on It column in tbt*. He began gambling way too young (don't tell the fuzz!) and in the seventh grade, named his state "Gambleland" for a school project (State Animal? Loan shark, of course).

Nice one Nikademus, that's a great resource. Now I can find all of Fasso appearances!

Foxwoods does not have a published rule book available for players. If you ask for the rules they will give you the rank of hands and the explanation of how each game works. This came up twice while I was there. Once when I came in behind the button and the deal tried to make me pay both blinds and a pandamonium broke out and there were 3 players of tables arguing with dealers and floor people. It was insane. And another time when a dealer mucked my winning hand and pushed the whole pot to the guy who deserved a quarter. Both times they were unwilling to produce a rule book.

"Don't taze me bro!" lol...I had to get that one in there. :p
Funny interview with Eugene Todd--I can tell the guy is from Brooklyn b/c he talks like my Nawtheastin' relatives. :)
Nice props for Representative Barney Frank. I had the opportunity to meet him in '05 at that year's state Democratic convention (yes, I'm a donkey, but hopefully not in THAT way). ;)
Hope everyone is having a nice Thanksgiving!

About Harrah's and online poker, in 2001 they put the size of a WSOP Main Event buy-in in the coffers of Frist. The investment paid off 5 years later.

I was laughing so hard at the inteview with Mr. Todd Bro that I nearly crashed the car.
I had an image of Chris faced with an avalanche of obscenities desperately trying to beep them all but letting many through.
That guy's favourite card seems to be the King, everything he said was 'King this and 'King that.

Now THAT is funny!!!

Chris- Lay off of the "interesting" thing. Interesting is a perfectly cromulent word, and sometimes it's even the best word for the situation. I'm all for expanding one's vocabulary, and don't mind the initial discussion about it and the presentation of alternatives, but don't keep derailing the conversation just to needle Scott about word choice.

Listening to the interview with Todd Bro was like a scene from "My Dinner with Andre". Chris was just about speechless and Todd just kept talking.
That was great!

For the hand of the week...
Nick, did you consider pushing when he check-raised you on the turn? There's not too many hands that beat you here and you are pretty much pot committed anyways. I think it's a push or fold decision on the turn here. I would have pushed. It would be pretty tough to fold the river bet with only a full house unless you have a REALLY strong read on your opponent.
I haven't heard the podcast yet though... What were Scott and Chris' recommendations?

Hey Jobo, are you a longtime listener? Do you remember when I used to get mocked by Fasso and Long for using HYSTERICAL? I'm just repaying him, and he corrects himself more than I do. I certainly don't think the conversation gets derailed. That insinuates the conversation never gets back on track, which is false. In this week's show he says interesting and I don't say anything, so no worries.

Some excellent interviews guys, but seriously this is podcasting do you really need to censor them?

Yep. We're a newspaper first. I like my job.
