The perfect poker playlist
I believe I've mentioned this on the blog before, but I'm always intrigued by the music that people play at their home games. When we got to Scott's house he always has that crappy Deep Tracks on his digital cable. I want to pull my hair out sometimes, and I think that's part of his master plan. But when I had people over to my house to play I made a special mix that included everything from Van Morrison to O.A.R. And then someone at the game liked the mix so much I gave them the disc. With that said, I found this site that lets you make a playlist and embed it on here. Feel free to copy this list or make your own. I used the instrumental to Ante Up by M.O.P. because I didn't want the lyrics to offend anyone, but of course I didn't realize some of the other songs would have the same sort of lyrics and now it's posted, so too late. If you get easily offended don't listen to songs 3-5.
What would be on your list?
-- Chris

Christopher Cosenza is co-host of the longest running poker podcast on the planet, Ante Up! He started playing poker seriously in 2003 and his favorite players are Phil Ivey and Kenna James, though he tends to act like Phil Hellmuth if you make a bad play against him.
Scott Long, Ante Up!'s other co-host, is the author of the monthly Bet on It column in tbt*. He began gambling way too young (don't tell the fuzz!) and in the seventh grade, named his state "Gambleland" for a school project (State Animal? Loan shark, of course).

What could be better than having a bunch of guys over around a poker table, drinking your beverage of choice and having some tasty snacks while raising all in to the sounds of Air Supply in the background? ;-)

Chris, I'll save you the trouble...I'm looking for the "Stuck in your Grandpa's Music" blog. But then, I am older than dirt.
For my home game, i have a playlist that includes lots of Dean Martin, Sammy and Frank to start the game off. In my age group, gets everyone happy.
As the evening wears on, I pep it up with some Garth Brooks ("Friends in low places" is a sad UGLY sing along). Toby Keith ("Should Have Been a Cowboy"...Hey, it's South Dakota, some of them are Cowboys). Mary Chapin Carpenter's, "I Feel Lucky".
I wrap up the evening with a set of Jazz songs...Bobby Darren, "Mack the Knife", A.J Croce (Jim Croce's son)...Best Jazz artist you've never hard of, and LOTS of BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY (You may know them from the movie "Swingers" from a couple of years ago).
Here's a you tube link to what should become your new favorite song and video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gmpmjsq8Z70&feature=related
Depending on how th night goes, I will cash chips in while playing "Minnie the Moocher" (Cab Callaway of course), or "I I were a Rich man" Tevye from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF...
Yeap, Rat Pack, Country (I like both kinds of music...Country and Western), Boogie Woogie and sometimes show tunes.
But I do provide a stocked bar and I will smoke ribs. The yin and yang that is MY home game.

Smoke ribs? Filtered or unfiltered? LOL!
That's some variety you got there, aces!

Gary, How could you leave of "Ace of Spades" by Motorhead?

simple0010:
I thought you gave us a link to some Nugent and I was ready to say, "F-yah some Detroit rock city music!" but instead I clicked on the link and saw the Milwaukee's Best can fall on you instead. That was worse than being Rick Rolled.
I'll play Frankie and the boys from the pack, some hip hop, jazz, funk, jam and good alternative/classic rock. The iPod is just set on shuffle.

How about Michael Jackson's Thriller. We can all dream of being at never never land. I will be dreaming to be on the Ferris wheel hand in hand with Michael while holding pocket Aces. LOL I am sick.

Of course I'll throw in Ace Of Spades and from there it's shuffle all the way. This can include Frank Zappa, trash/death metal, Van Der Graaf Generator, Wagner, Holst, Busta Rhymes, jazz, reggae, acid house, The Who (sorry Chris, I was raised on that music), Jade Leary (some Canadian guy, I love it), easy tune (90's easy listening variation), Peter Hammill (just when you thought Leonard Cohen was depressing), Philip Glass, a bit of cajun - you get the picture.
Some of the above may distract the others, so I might take it out of the mix - but this would be a fair representation of my choice.

The playlist isn't loading for me...it's just blank. Any idea what the requirements are? I'm running firefox on a PC for starters.
Posted by: Godard | March 27, 2008 at 09:27 PM
I'm with aces88ss on the Rat Pack. They're a little before my time, but they hit just the right upbeat mood without being too distracting. If you like to just play CDs, there are some good Rat Pack anthologies on Amazon. I've also made up my own RatPack playlist from iTunes and, just for fun, threw in some Tom Jones and "Do It Again" by Steely Dan. I believe I actually play better with that playlist than with random music or heavier rock&roll.
A James Bond title theme collection CD would be promising... "Do you expect me to call, Goldfinger?" "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to fold!"

Not sure what's up with the player for you Godard, but since you made the final table last night I don't feel too bad for you either. Player takes a second to load on my computers but still loads.

I left out ace of spades becuase i dont like the song. Not my kind of music...
With chris's playlist I like the crazy game of poker but dont like the rest. I think I rather listen to scott music than that.. but have to wait to hear his playlist to see what kind of songs he puts on.
nothign wrong with people liking it.. just not me... proably will be someone that dont like my music either.

Wilco - "Casino Queen"
"The room fills with smoke
and I'm already broke
And the dealer keeps on jokin'
As he takes my last token
Casino queen
My lord, you're mean
I've been gambling like a fiend on your table so green...."

There's an old Music Hall song called
"I'm forever blowing bubbles"
For tournaments of course, or Michael Jackson
