Career Day (or, The Ring-Tailed Lulu)
Friday is "Career Day" at my daughter's school. She's 3 years old. The note from school said the kids should dress up as "whatever they want to be when they grow up." Fair enough. So I asked Lulu what she wants to be when she grows up. And my daughter, so incredibly earnest, looks at me with her saucer-big blue eyes and says, "A raccoon."
Here's a playlist of viable career paths for my daughter:
1.) Teacher, Teacher -- .38 Special
2.) In the Navy -- the Village People
3.) The Boxer -- Simon and Garnfunkel
4.) Paperback Writer -- the Beatles
5.) The Gambler -- Kenny Rogers
6.) The Scientist -- Coldplay
7.) Doctor My Eyes -- Jackson Browne
8.) Sheena Is a Punk Rocker -- the Ramones
9.) Centerfield -- John Fogerty
And of course...
10.) Rocky Raccoon -- the Beatles

Sean Daly is the pop music critic for the St. Petersburg Times. His CD collection -- from Journey to Dylan, Prince to U2, Public Enemy to Stan Getz -- is much bigger and better than yours.
Sounds like you need to get more sleep if Lulu thinks that her daddy is a raccoon.

How about a couple of songs for those of us who don't like to work too hard:
"Life's Been Good" -- Joe Walsh
"Bang on the Drum All Day" -- Todd Rundgren

Wow, Daly! Olivia's school has color day and shape day, not career day! Actually, today is "Mad Scientist Day," whatever the hell that means. Maybe they are going to create some kind of concoction that I can drink. Are you going in to talk about being a writer? I can picture the kids throwing Play-Do at you or taking a good nap at the time. Is Lulu going to dress in wrinkled pants with a bad hat that says, "Scoop" on it. Well, here's a shout-out to the writing profession via some songs:
"Paperback Writer" Beatles
"Lady Writer" Dire Straits
"Every Day I Write the Book" Elvis Costello
"Writing to Reach You" Travis
"Mr. Writer" Stereophonics
"Sonnet" The Verve
"Shadow Stabbing" Cake
