Will Dave Sing Sammy's Songs?
I heard Hot for Teacher on the way to work and started wondering: If Van Halen gets their sh-- together and tours with David Lee Roth this summer, will the '80s party boys play any of the Van Hagar catalogue? When Sammy toured with the band, he played a few DLR-era cuts, including Panama and Jump. But Hagar is more reasonable, more secure. I really can't hear Roth half-assedly trying to croon Dreams or Poundcake, and I'm not sure I want to. Whattaya think? Will Dave sing Sammy songs?
I also started fantasizing about a setlist. Here's what I envision...
Intro -- Eddie/Alex guitar-drums vamp
Runnin' With the Devil
Unchained
Jamie's Cryin'
Drop Dead Legs
Mean Street
Alex Drum Solo (leads into...)
Everybody Wants Some!!!
Dance the Night Away
I'll Wait
Beautiful Girls
Hear About It Later
I'm the One
Wolfgang Van Halen Bass Shenanigans (leads into...)
Eddie Van Halen Guitar Theatrics/Eruption (leads into...)
You Really Got Me
...And the Cradle Will Rock
Ain't Talkin' Bout Love
Panama
ENCORE
Jump
Hot for Teacher
Happy Trails

Sean Daly is the pop music critic for the St. Petersburg Times. His CD collection -- from Journey to Dylan, Prince to U2, Public Enemy to Stan Getz -- is much bigger and better than yours.
THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rock Tampa Bay. To hear the latest "Stuck in the 80s" episode now,
Daly,
Beleive me I saw Sammy and Dave on their tour and Dave can't sing Dave's songs let alone Sammy's. Wolfie will probably try his hand at Sammy's vocals unless he pulls a Peter Brady and has a vocal change in mid tour.

I saw Dave in 1999 with a crack band of teenagers in Tunica, MS at Harrah's casino and it RULED. Sure, it has been 8 years, but Sammy couldn't sing those awful tunes in 1987, so anything Dave does will be an improvement.
This is what you'll really be missing:

How about Senorita instead of Happy Trails.

This seems like it would be an awesome setlist. I might have to create an iTunes approximation.
Also, #3 -- the song is called Little Guitars, not Senorita. And I don't think it would end a show as well.

I'd like to open the show with "Romeo Delight." I would love that as an opener. Especially with the line, "We're in for a very long night!"

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced the setlist will be strictly DLR-era tunes. I'm willing to bet most of the ticket-buyers will be from the anti-Van Hagar camp.

Sammy can sing and play the guitar, Dave can't sing and tries to dance or tries to sing and can't dance, give me a break his on stage stuff was old before he got old.
Dave better leave the Van Hagar music to someone than can handle it and at least try to sing (if he doesn't muck up the lyrics) his old stuff.

I just hope Dave doesn't try one of his infamous drum-riser flying splits. I saw him attempt a soaring spread eagle a few years back, and it was horrific. About as athletic as Bea Arthur falling off a curb.

What's the over/under on broken hips?
And how many days into the tour before the first cancellation of a show due to someone quitting the band.

Looks like nobody will have to worry about Dave singing Sammy's songs, looks like the reunion is going to be postponed.

I think the tour postponement is nothing more than a component of VH publicity plan.
I think the tour will definitely happen - how else will Eddie pay for his smokes and vodka and DLR cover the cost of his hair plugs?
This has trainwreck written all over it -- which is exactly why this tour will sell out everywhere.

I think before all is said and done, the only Van Halen reunion that is going to take place is Van Halen 3 w/ Gary Cherone. I really don't see Diamond Dave and Eddie out on the road together unless they have at least 3 buses.
Poor Valerie has to really be pissed at Eddie for bringing Wolfie into the group. Most people want to be in the circus or rock stars when they are kids. With Van Halen, Wolfie will get to do both at the same time.

I'd switch "I'll Wait" with "Light Up The Sky" from Van Halen II. Otherwise solid. I especially give you props for including "I'm The One;" best Van Halen song ever!
