It's Sweet Week, Boys and Girls
My work wife Janet Keeler, the travel and food editor here at the ol' SPT, is throwing a Sweet Week bash over on her Stir Crazy blog. All desserts, all the time. Mmmm, Gateau Mousse au Chocolat.
The work wife is a very important concept: totally pleutonic platonic (p-l-a-t-o-n-i-c, platonic), very supportive, occasionally constantly nagging. The most important thing about my work wife, however, is that she gives me money for the candy machine almost every day. That's why we're work married.
So in honor of Janet's gooey desserts and related sweet-toothery, here's today's "Oompa-Loompas Scare the Ever-Lovin' Crap Out of Me" playlist:
1) American Pie -- Don McLean
2) Cherry Pie -- Warrant
3) Candy Everybody Wants -- 10,000 Maniacs
4) Sweet Child O' Mine -- Guns N' Roses
5) Sugar Mountain -- Neil Young
6) Peppermint Twist -- Chubby Checker Joey Dee & the Starlighters
7) Candy Shop -- 50 Cent
8) Candy Girl -- New Edition
9) Whipped Cream -- Herb Alpert
10) Ice Cream Man -- Van Halen

Sean Daly is the pop music critic for the St. Petersburg Times. His CD collection -- from Journey to Dylan, Prince to U2, Public Enemy to Stan Getz -- is much bigger and better than yours.
Work wife? Work mother is more like it. The wife wouldn't leave quarters for the candy machine, but Mommy would. Besides, I'm old enough to be her and mean enough to correct your spelling. It's platonic, sweetheart. That fulfills today's nagging requirement.
And I have nothing but respect and admiration for the FF. How does she do it?
How about adding "MacArthur Park" to the sugar-soaked playlist?

That's it -- we are so work divorced.

"Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" by Ohio Express might work. Although, I just looked up the lyrics and it would seem perverted now that Janet has declared she's more like a work mom.
"Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, I got love in my tummy
And I feel like a-lovin you
Love, you're such a sweet thing
Good enough to eat thing
And it's just a-what I'm gonna do"
Yeah, kinda creepy.

Hey Sean,
Quick correction: Peppermint Twist was originally done by Joey Dee and the Starlighters....but we have some lovely parting gifts for you...
Great list!

Fine -- I'll change that, too.
Anyone else have a gripe?

Hey Sean, I only know about the Chubby Checker version of The peppermint Twist. It's not like you were WRONG that he did it and made it popular.
Don't fret. Have a little chocolate and it will be okay.

Siouxie and the Banshees "I want Candy!"

You have a woman at work that buys you candy? Sounds more like a sugar momma to me...
I would add Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy. Did Siouxie Sioux do a version?

How about "Candy man" written by Anthony Newley from the original "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate factory" I made that song a number ONE hit in July of 1972. How many of these other "sweet" songs made it to number one?

Candy's Room (Bruce)
Taste of Honey (many artists)
Sugar, Sugar (The Archies) . . . one of the most reviled songs of my youth
Candyman (Sammie) . . . another parody

And don't forget George Harrison's underrated "Savoy Truffle."
"You know that what you eat you are
But what is sweet now turns so sour"
I know YOU haven't forgotten that sax-driven White Album gem, Mr. Pop Life!

Dear Ms. Janet: please stop giving my daddy money for the candy machine. It makes him pudgy and hyper - and I'm sure you know what he's like when he's hyper! Not pretty!
P.S. My mom rocks - I don't know how she puts up with him either.

Under the Milky Way - The Church
Peppermint Patty - Wynton Marsalis
Mary Jane - Alanis Morissette
Sweet Baby - Macy Gray
Slow Like Honey - Fiona Apple
I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl - Nina Simone
Pour Some Sugar on Me - Def Leppard
Brown Sugar - Rolling Stones
Candy Man - Christina Aguilera

Nicely done, Tonianne.
Can't believe I missed Christina, considering how I try to watch the "Candyman" video at least 30 times a day.

And because it has been such a productive day (insert sarcasm here), a few more:
"C" is for Cookie - Cookie Monster
Goodies - Ciara
Lady Marmalade - Patti LaBelle
The Dipsey Doodle - Ella Fitzgerald
Gingerbread Boy - Miles Davis
In Your Own Sweet Way - Dave Brubeck
I'm Called Little Buttercup - Gilbert and Sullivan
Sweet Potato Pie - James Taylor
Eskimos may have hundreds of words for "snow," but Italians have iPods filled with songs about food.

You're right, Lulu. I've been a candy pusher. From now on, the quarter bowl will be filled wth celery sticks.
Are there any pop songs about vegetables?
Posted by: Janet Keeler | October 04, 2007 at 08:00 PM
Sugar Walls - Sheena Easton.
At least I assume the song's about something sweet.

Brad! I am so red faced. You're right! It was Bow Wow Wow. Argh! Thanks for the gentle correction.
That sounds like a laxative, huh?
