It's Been 27 Years
Today marks the 27th anniversary of the shooting death of John Lennon. After working in the studio, he was supposed to go out to dinner. Instead, he came home to the Dakota to kiss his 5-year-old son Sean good night.

Go here to hang out with Yoko.
Or better yet, go play Rubber Soul or Double Fantasy and sing as loud as you can.

Sean Daly is the pop music critic for the St. Petersburg Times. His CD collection -- from Journey to Dylan, Prince to U2, Public Enemy to Stan Getz -- is much bigger and better than yours.
I remember my mom coming to my room to tell me the news about John being shot and killed. She got on the phone to call my sisters and brothers. I grew up on The Beatles albums. It seemed surreal that someone would want to murder him. "Imagine" still has a profound affect on me when I hear it. I think it always will.

As a native New Yorker still living there at the time, I was and remain haunted by the fact that John Lennon was murdered on the streets of his beloved adopted hometown. What a loss for his family, his friends and for all the rest of us in the world! Almost all Beatles music still affects me profoundly, as does "Imagine" and the "Double Fantasy" album. I prefer, however, to celebrate his life rather than focus on the day of his death.

I remember watching Nightline when the story broke. Very sad. Fortunately he left behind some of the greatest music ever done.

It's hard to believe it's been 27 years. Time goes way to fast.

Today, every John Lennon fan should be listening to "The Dakota" by Christine Lavin.
