Mother Knows Best

Jeffersons6

This marks the 5th day of my mother's visit to Florida. I love her dearly, of course. And Kid Lulu is crazy about her grandma, who in turn dutifully spoils Lu as if she's a royal princess. My mom had a tricky year, but she's a tough cookie and is now lookin' and feelin' good. I'm immensely proud of the unsinkable M. Daly.

That said -- ahem -- THIS IS THE 5TH DAY OF MY MOTHER'S VISIT TO FLORIDA. All of you folks hosting moms for the holidays, this playlist is for you...

Mother -- John Lennon
Mama Said Knock You Out -- LL Cool J
Mama Tried -- Merle Haggard
Hey Mama -- Kanye West
Mother and Child Reunion -- Paul Simon
Mother Nature's Son -- the Beatles
Mother, Father -- Journey
Mother's Little Helper -- the Rolling Stones
Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys -- Willie Nelson
Parents Just Don't Understand -- DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince

My parents were here a couple of weeks ago, and while they love visiting Cuba, and we all love seeing them (especially the kids), my Mom can be a bit "high-maintenance".

So by the time they left, the song that was playing over and over in my head was the insufferable "Mother" by the Police.

"The telephone is ringing...Could that be my mother on the phone?"

Shudder.

My mother offers a running commentary on everything she sees. The other day she offered a touching soliloquy on a Checkers fast-food sign. It's kinda cute -- unless you're in a heavily trafficked commercial zone. You know, like the entirety of Tampa Bay.

Mama - Genesis
Mama Told Me Not To Come - Randy Newman
Mama Weer All Crazee Now - Slade
Mama's Boy - Suzi Quatro
Mothers Talk - Tears For Fears
Tie Tour Mother Down - Queen
I Saw Your Mommy... - Suicidal Tendencies
Mamma's Little Jewel - Mott The Hoople
Who Are Parents - The Shaggs

Mother Jefferson!

Must second "Mother" by The Police. Total earwig, that one. Shudder indeed.

And adding "If Momma Were Married" from Gypsy and "Your Mama Don't Dance" by Loggins & Messina.

"Mother Mother" - Tracy Bonham dedicated to my mother-in-law for my wife.

God bless you, Jane. I showed that snapshot to a few colleagues and no one knew Mother Jefferson!

Dude, my Mom, Dad AND 90 year old grandma live with me for the winter months each year. Imagine your ma's visit lasting from late November to early April. I'm not complaining, just sayin.

Sean -- they didn't recognize Zara "Mother Jefferson" Cully? For shame... next you'll be telling me that they have no idea who LaWanda "Aunt Esther" Page is...

Damn, I am old as dirt.

"I could stick your face in some dough and make some gorilla cookies!"

"Who you callin' ugly, sucker?"

Wow, Jane, I think I'm falling in love.

Aw, shucks.

Lemme know when you want to move on to Good Times...

"Take Your Mama" -- Scissor Sisters. Great song, although not sure it's the message you want to send...

Mother - Pink Floyd
Sherri Darling - Bruce Springsteen (for mother-In-law reference)
A Song For Mama - Boyz II Men
Mamma Said - Peter Wolf
Mama - Oingo Boingo

You forgot about Danzig!

Mama's Arms ~ Joshua Kadison
