PODCAST TIME! Night Ranger's Jack Blades
This is a hot one, superstars. In anticipation of his Jan. 29 show at Clearwater's Ruth Eckerd Hall, Night Ranger frontman Jack Blades joined Steve Spears and yours truly for a Stuck in the '80s podcast like never before. HEAR Blades serenade the boys with all your fave hits. HEAR Blades spin yarns about rocking in Damn Yankees with the Motor City Madman. HEAR Blades and Daly trade Seinfeldian schtick on such mundane topics as payphones and bottled water (wait a minute -- what?). All of this is yours for free by clicking the link on the right or downloading Stuck in the '80s on iTunes. Trust me, hilarity ensues -- as does a very special performance of this song, my very fave from Night Ranger (which Spears TOTALLY poached from me, but, if you listen to the show, you'll realize is mine all mine...

Sean Daly is the pop music critic for the St. Petersburg Times. His CD collection -- from Journey to Dylan, Prince to U2, Public Enemy to Stan Getz -- is much bigger and better than yours.
LOL... good show sean.. love your vocals on Don't Tell Me You Love Me!! lol!

Sean, I just got home about 30 minutes ago. I have the podcast crankin' in my triple pierced ears (but only wear one set). What a lovely welcome home: I get to hear my two most favorite men!
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:18 PM
Thanks, ladies. That show felt really easy and fun. Not sure if it's a classic, but I had a swell time.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 05:22 PM
Sean-darlin'! You're in my head right this very minute
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:30 PM
Yes, yes, come to me...
So, 'Riss, did you get to the "polarizing" part?
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 05:32 PM
Okay, now Jack Blades is singing' "Four in the mornin'" to me. I think I'm getting giddy!
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:32 PM
I made the mistake of starting the podcast and then trying to read the comments on steve's blog. I'm great with multi-tasking, but not that sort.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:33 PM
Yeah Sean, it was a good show... Thank You for FINALLY telling the Lobster Tails story... but REALLY... bathing with my dinner wouldn't have been allowed in my family! LOL
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 05:35 PM
Now, walk me step by step through your "Dance of the Seven Buttons", and I'll be a happy girl!
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 05:36 PM
Alas, I haven't had time to listen to this week's podcast masterpiece yet. (The Seahawks/Packers game is kickin' a** and taking names... a playoff game in the snow? Does it get better than that?)
But I did take a listen to the pre-game banter. Sean, I'm up to duet with you anytime -- you can take the higher falsetto parts and I'll bring in those low notes. I'll be the Sanbora to your Bon Jovi.
Posted by: jane | January 12, 2008 at 05:36 PM
You're not there yet. At some point after the interview, I call the two of us "polarizing" forces -- as in some people love us, some people wanna throw us overboard. Not sure if the peeps at '80s broke that down or not.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 05:36 PM
Ya know, I grew up Catholic in a public school system. My older brother viewed me as this ultra-pristine little sister. Granted, I was, but later in life I questioned his friends who never asked me out WHY they didn't. They all confessed that my big bro threatened them.
Sister Christian kind of reminds me of that.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:38 PM
Yeah, we caught that Sean!
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 05:38 PM
Jake Blades is absolutely out there funny. He is a lot like you, Sean.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:39 PM
Damn, that Packers-Seattle game has a ton of points already. You know where I'm gonna be for the Pats-Jags game tonight? Yep, bedecked in my Tom Brady jersey (and nothing else...)

Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 05:39 PM
Did Steve do any interviewing at all? I haven't heard him since you started talking to Jack.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:40 PM
Whoo Hoo... is it a 'bottom' optional party, Sean?? LOL
March 22nd, huh. That's my Dad's b-day! Although 20+ years earlier!!
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 05:41 PM
AH, now there's a delightful visual, Sean. Thanks for that.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:41 PM
Gotta head to a Gator party, but just thought I'd show some love! I made it to the mention of Lucky Man, causing me to buy that old classic off iTunes!
Posted by: John Hays | January 12, 2008 at 05:42 PM
Ah, there's Steve talking about Jeff.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:43 PM
Carla, the Dance of the Seven Buttons is your basic north-south maneuver, top to bottom. However, with the DOTSB, the sexual tension is heightened by the pace and mystery of each unbuttoning. Usually I provide my own music, maybe a little Henry Mancini.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 05:44 PM
Dang it! Now I'm going to have to spend more money on iTunes.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:44 PM
I figured you'd play Bolero when you do that DOTSB, Sean.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:45 PM
and didn't Mancini do the Pink Panther theme music? or do you go all out with Moonriver?
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:46 PM
Sean... I'm thinking a 'Youtube' video of the DOTSB followed by "The Hover" would bring you World Wide fame!!
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 05:46 PM
Nothing against the Pats, but I'm with the Jags tonight -- a Florida solidarity thing and my Gator boy Fred Taylor.
PS: For Christmas, I received two courtside seats to the Celtics/Bulls game in Boston the first weekend in March. Booyah! I can watch my revived Celtics and try to get Joakim Noah's attention (we're sitting behind the Bulls' bench) all in one evening.
Posted by: jane | January 12, 2008 at 05:47 PM
Thanks for dropping by, John. Not sure why the Gators are still partying (basketball???), but hey, if there's booze and Funyuns, who cares what the reason is.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 05:48 PM
Fred Taylor was a beast on my fantasy team. Honestly, I think the Jags are gonna keep this one close. I understand people like to wager, ahem, but that 13.5-point spread is ridiculous. This one could be decided by a FG.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 05:50 PM
Bolero -- ha, me and Bo Derek. I'll try it next time. But I'm not sure I have the endurance.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 05:51 PM
Awe, dang it! I'm lovable. There's no need for hatin!
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:51 PM
You ARE lovable. However, you are now officially in the public eye. And you have a strong personality. And you say whatever's on your mind. That brings out the lovers and the fighters.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 05:54 PM
Geez! I'm not sure what to think or feel about that.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 05:58 PM
By the way, Jane, I'll duet with you anytime. We'll record it over the phone. Spears can clean it up. And then we'll release our duet to the world!!!
"Endless Love"?
"Too Much Too Little Too Late"?
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 05:58 PM
Daly, you're still alive, my old friend.
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 05:59 PM
Sean, an autographed Funyun bag would be fabu! I made a bag with your face on it, but never sent it to you lol
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:01 PM
Are you kidding me? Ask Spears. People call me an a-hole on a daily (Daly) basis. Not that anyone's saying that about you. But when you provide an entertainment, that's what happens. You should embrace your "polarizing" powers.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Spearsy! You want your kids back?
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 06:04 PM
Argh!
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:04 PM
What about "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" or "Almost Paradise"?
Or, going a bit farther back -- "Don't Go Breaking My Heart"... We'd probably want to also do a video with that one.
And to heck with the phone thing -- we need to do this in person...
Posted by: jane | January 12, 2008 at 06:04 PM
I just called Daly an a-hole five minutes ago. It just pops out. Like a weasel, you might say. Or anything of like variety.
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:04 PM
Done and done, Marissa. Autographed Funyuns coming your way...
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 06:05 PM
Sean, you can tend the gang as long as you want.
Damn that Green Bay game. I got home, stripped stark naked, settled into the hot tub with a jug of whiskey, started watching and totally forgot there was still a chat going on.
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:06 PM
"Don't Go Breaking My Heart" -- it's gotta be that!!
Only I'll be Kiki Dee and you'll be EJ.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 06:07 PM
Well, I thought the podcast was really great. Jack seemed really easy to interview. Of course, your skills could have had something to do with that, Sean. Oh, and Steve, you did a great job, too.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:07 PM
By the way, did anyone download and listen to the pre-show chatter? All that trouble and no feedback...
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:08 PM
I was always the girl everybody liked. ::sniffle:: I'm not accustomed to being disliked. My mascara might run now
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:09 PM
A gender-bender duet -- that could work. Get your Grammy acceptance speech ready!
Posted by: jane | January 12, 2008 at 06:09 PM
Even Daly admits he hogged the microphone during the interview. But hey, he's a bigger Blades fan than me. I'm still trying to appreciate the subtle nuance of Four in the Morning.
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:09 PM
I listened, Steve.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:09 PM
In case you missed it, the pre-show chatter:
http://blogs.tampabay.com/80s/files/preshowbanter112.mp3
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Spears, you're driving Carla crazy with that nekkid visual. The rest of us? Not so much.
Thanks, Marissa. You're a doll.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 06:11 PM
Back in a bit.
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:11 PM
Ahem -- I listened to the pre-game chatter. 'Tis where I got my latest get-rich-quick scheme of a duet with Sean. I like the informalness of it -- the method behind the madness, so to speak.
Posted by: jane | January 12, 2008 at 06:12 PM
He's back out to the hot tub! Sean, I'll send you the Funyun bag mock up that I did. It's not Tom Jones album cover quality, but it's something.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:12 PM
Whoo, hot flashes over here, with those images in my head... how'd you know Sean??
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 06:13 PM
And Sean... Don't hate.. you've got your admirers!! lol
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 06:15 PM
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m78/marissa65/funyunkid.jpg
There, that'll be easier.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:15 PM
I don't know if I dig the pregame chatter pirouetting in cyberspace. I gotta watch what I say now. Usually I'm soliloquizing a tender game of "who would you rather...?" while Spears shakes his head in disgust.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 06:15 PM
ACK! My friend will call me and drop a game of that on me, Sean.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:17 PM
Hey Sean... did you ever get that cd I sent you?
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 06:18 PM
Okay, kids, I gotta go feed the fam. I was hoping to seduce Spears into a night on the town (or at least a lousy sports bar watch the Pats game), but now that he's naked and wet...
I'll be back later tonight. Maybe at halftime. You'll probably be having a cyber-orgy at '80s, so I'll find you there...
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 06:19 PM
Who Would you Rather?
Good game, but Marry, Boff or Kill is better.
Posted by: jane | January 12, 2008 at 06:19 PM
Ha! Funyuns have never tasted so good!!!
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 06:20 PM
lol sounds interesting Jane
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:20 PM
Jane... I like your style!!
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 06:20 PM
Carla! Carla! Carla! You're CD was great. You have no idea how happy you made my friend. Seriously. Thanks so much. I owe you big time. Name the price. Nude shots of Spears? Done. Got some in my wallet.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 06:22 PM
LOL Sean.. you and your friend are welcome! I think I'll hold on to that favor... never know what I might need one day. As for the nakid picture of Spears.. I already got one... J/K!! lol
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 06:24 PM
Dammit, I gotta go! But PROMISE me we'll play "marry, boff or kill" later. I love that. That was a Howard Stern game. Great stuff.
Admit it -- you'd marry me and boff Spears. I know the drill around here.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 12, 2008 at 06:25 PM
I'm at a rare loss for words.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:30 PM
It's a promise -- great game. Never a dull moment with it.
Posted by: jane | January 12, 2008 at 06:31 PM
And I'm not answering Mr. Daly's parting question, as advised by counsel.
Posted by: jane | January 12, 2008 at 06:33 PM
Marissa, too many images going through your head?? lol
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 06:33 PM
Sean's gone again?
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:34 PM
Where to now, everybody?
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:35 PM
He can't sit still for long, Steve. You know that.
Yeah, I'm a bit perplexed, Carla. I just need a drink and I'll be fine.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:36 PM
I was intrigued by his offer of wings, beers and Patriot football. But I think watching the game at home -- with drinks on the house -- would be safer for me and the rest of St. Petersburg.
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:39 PM
What did it for you... the bath with lobster tails or the nekkid photos being offered of Steve??
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 06:40 PM
Probably a wise decision, Sir Spears. Besides, I don't think we can muster the bail money and get to you before Bubba tries to have his way with you in lock up.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:41 PM
Marissa... you're welcome to come on down to Nashville... we'll chat from here with drinks in hand!!
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 06:41 PM
Sean sent me the nudes of Steve already. The DOTSB has me in a dither.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:42 PM
Here's the latest nekkid photo of me:
http://www.x-entertainment.com/halloween/2006/random/alf.jpg
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:42 PM
Steve... you're a tease!! LOL
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 06:43 PM
YA know, I wasn't terribly far from Nashville 3 years ago. "I wanna go back.. and do it all over, but I can't go back summin summin"
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:43 PM
My son is watching Karate Kid II. He's getting into it. IT's funny as heck.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:44 PM
I can't go back ... I know...
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:45 PM
I prefer Karate Kid 2 to the original. Call me nuts. I just never bought into Elisabeth Shue falling for Ralph Macchio.
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:46 PM
Crap! Now I'm going to have to go d/l that song along with Night Ranger on iTunes. This blogging thing is costing me a small fortune. Kidney anyone? I have one for sale.
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:47 PM
I'll be back at my 80s blog, waxing on and off, if anyone needs me.
Posted by: Spears | January 12, 2008 at 06:48 PM
What's so fun about him watching movies of my youth, is that he is a fresh set of eyes... and he thinks they're awesome flicks. At age 6 he was quoting "Better off Dead"
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:48 PM
lol, tell me about it Marissa! It's been like this for me since I started listening to the podcast and reading the blogs. I'm always downloading songs I forgot about or songs Sean/Steve have recommended!
Posted by: Carla | January 12, 2008 at 06:50 PM
I'm following Steve, by the way. I'm on a short leash. LOL
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 06:52 PM
Sean, are you back or just pop n' going?
Posted by: Marissa | January 12, 2008 at 08:00 PM
Ooh, this post is so close to 100 comments. I downloaded Night Ranger's Greatest hits last night. I haven't decided which tune is my fave.
I also got The Best of Eddie Money ...the night before that it was the Outfield's Big Innings.
What next, Mr. Daly? What next?
Posted by: Marissa | January 13, 2008 at 09:56 AM
Miss Riss! Not Sean, obviously (although we both -- allegedly for him, certain for me -- have hairless chests), but I have a suggestion for you... check out Nouvelle Vague on iTunes. They do these kooky, cool, slightly bossa nova-tinged remakes of '80s songs and I dig them a lot.
Faves: "Dancing with Myself", "I Melt with You" and especially "Too Drunk to F***" I'm curious to know what you think...
Posted by: jane | January 13, 2008 at 10:18 AM
Sweet! Thanks for the heads up, Jane. I'm heading over there right now! I loves me some new funk!
Posted by: Marissa | January 13, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Jane! now I know where L.A. Ink got that cover version of "Dancing with Myself." It's been bugging me since that show started. Thank you so much! I love cheeky covers like that. It's not crappy cheeky, but kooky cheeky that is pleasantly palatable. woot!
Posted by: Marissa | January 13, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Sweet! You turned me onto Poe, so I'm glad to return the favor.
Another cheeky-cool fave: Bitter:Sweet. LOVE!
Posted by: jane | January 13, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Are we hanging here today, or over at SIT8?
I could just look for myself, but I thought I'd hlep Marissa reach the century mark!
Posted by: Jeff in Cuba | January 13, 2008 at 12:22 PM
This is more of a "Stuck In The 80's" thing, but here's a link to a woefully lame webpage with a short sample of my radio show.
Enjoy.
Or at least endure.

Posted by: Jeff in Cuba | January 13, 2008 at 12:30 PM
So awesome, Jeff! I'll take a look-see and a listen. This, by the way, is comment 100!!!
Posted by: Marissa | January 13, 2008 at 12:37 PM
I was saving the cherished 100th slot just for you!
I'm still working on somehow making a whole 2-hour show available.
Baby steps, baby steps.
Posted by: Jeff in Cuba | January 13, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Jane... I had downloaded that version of "Dancin' with myself" last week... cheeky, but cool!
Posted by: Carla | January 13, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Thanks Jeff, you're a gem. I'm sure with all the web-junkies who read and comment, you'll manage to get that task mastered.
Posted by: Marissa | January 13, 2008 at 12:54 PM
I just thought you needed a newer comment. I sent you a link to an online video you might enjoy. It's clean and you can view it at work lol
Posted by: Marissa | January 13, 2008 at 08:51 PM
Marissa, Big Innings is a pretty good album, but check out the Outfield's 1st album "Play Deep"......it's a pleasure from start to finish.
