Questions for Alanis Morissette?
I've just been offered an interview with Alanis Morissette, who's playing the St. Pete Times Forum on Jan. 26.
I have a feeling Alanis and I aren't going to get along -- she's deep, spiritual, considerate. I'm, well, not. But who knows? Strange bedfellows and all that.
Anyway, here's your chance: Questions for Alanis Morissette?

Sean Daly is the pop music critic for the St. Petersburg Times. His CD collection -- from Journey to Dylan, Prince to U2, Public Enemy to Stan Getz -- is much bigger and better than yours.
Ask her what her favorite Scarlett Johansson film is.

How came all the albums after your first one stunk?
Posted by: Bassnote | January 15, 2008 at 03:17 PM
Tell you what, I'll save that one for LAST.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 15, 2008 at 03:18 PM
I meant 'How come'. I am a lousy typist.
Posted by: Bassnote | January 15, 2008 at 03:18 PM
Believe it or not, DG, several people have compared me to Ryan Reynolds. Of course he's ripped and I'm a fat a--. So they must have meant our winning personalities.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 15, 2008 at 03:20 PM
Personally, I'd want to know if Ryan Reynolds is a good kisser. But that's just me.
Posted by: jane | January 15, 2008 at 03:21 PM
Alanis does seem to have a healthy sense of humor. I mean, she did date Uncle Joey from Full House.
Posted by: DG | January 15, 2008 at 03:49 PM
At the risk of getting onto ground that has already been covered more than enough, I'd be curious to hear her take on the Britney Spears trainwreck. Alanis had her own journey from kiddie TV performer to pop star to actual adult, and seems to have negotiated that course with considerably more success.
With all the chatter about Britney, Alanis is the one person who may actually be qualified to render an opinion.

What's your favorite song, that you've done?
(Sorry I had to bring it up)
Posted by: DenverMatt | January 15, 2008 at 04:10 PM
What was it like working with Kevin Smith.
And what Bassnote said.
Posted by: Tonianne | January 15, 2008 at 04:21 PM
Damn you AND Huey Lewis, DenverMatt.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 15, 2008 at 04:24 PM
You can inform her that my male friends know when I've been listening to her music due to my dark cynicism when we converse.
Ask if that green slime stuff ever irritated her skin. And if so, did it ever get anywhere that was hard to 'get at,' if you get my drift.
Posted by: Marissa | January 15, 2008 at 04:31 PM
Kevin Smith. Good one. Forgot about "Dogma." Maybe Alanis and I will fall in love after all.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 15, 2008 at 04:43 PM
This is slightly off topic - but did you notice that Spears asked the "what's your favorite song" question on the Jack Blades Stuck in the 80s podcast, with a very slight twist - and Blades gave him a "What a great question!"
Conspiracy?
Posted by: Brad | January 15, 2008 at 05:09 PM
A lil' backstage info on that -- When Blades gushed about that very question, I shot Spears a silent, disgusted look like "You've got to be kidding me!"
Spears, in turn, pantomimed a profane act.

Okay, kids, I'm outta here.
Stop by tonight (10:30ish) if you wanna chat about Idol.

What did the green slime taste like? I bet it tasted like chicken.
Posted by: sparky | January 15, 2008 at 07:54 PM
Any idea of the release date for the first single to go to radio and what is it called? Has the video been filmed?
Posted by: Scott Lee | January 15, 2008 at 07:58 PM
When is Flavors of Entanglement coming out?
Posted by: Will0w | January 15, 2008 at 07:59 PM
Has she choosen the first single off the new album?
Posted by: Tina | January 15, 2008 at 08:01 PM
Ask her if she goes to any of her fan forums to see what people are saying about her.
Posted by: Aaron M | January 15, 2008 at 08:07 PM
what is it about this album that speaks true about you at this point in your life?
where will this album lead you?
Posted by: Stephen | January 15, 2008 at 08:18 PM
PLEASE dont ask her any questions ab out Britney Spears HOW tired would that be? If you want Alanis to think you are a total idiot... ask her a question about Britney.
we would love to now some release dates.
Posted by: Randall | January 15, 2008 at 08:37 PM
Since her new album is more electronic, will she be commissioning any remixes?
Posted by: Ant | January 15, 2008 at 08:37 PM
You'll get along fine, until she notices your uncanny resemblance to former fiance Ryan Reynolds (assuming he had gotten rid of his beard and gone on a year-long Filet o' Fish sandwiches and Funyuns diet).
Posted by: Guy | January 15, 2008 at 08:37 PM
Ask her when she's going to retire.
Seriously. This is one musician who I cannot stand with a passion.
Just like how Sean freaks out when he hears "True.....", I do the same with Alanis.
Posted by: Al | January 15, 2008 at 08:38 PM
How about this:
"So, Alanis: You really can't carry a tune in a bucket. How does it feel to be the worst successful singer since Bonnie Tyler?"
Posted by: Old Fat Bald Chick Magnet | January 15, 2008 at 08:49 PM
You could ask her if she'll be touring Europe again... And you could also ask her if she's going to tour Australia again after almost a decade...
Is she ever going to (FINALLY) release songs like "Wounded Leading Wounded" or "Finally Acknowledgement", which we've never heard (in full at least). Or if she's ever going to release songs like No Pressure Over Capuccino, Death Of Cinderella, Princes Familiar, King Of Intimidation ... as studio versions. Maybe you could pitch her the idea of releasing some older songs and demos that will probably never get released otherwise via her website for the fans to enjoy (we've been wanting those for such a long time now).
Posted by: Bart | January 15, 2008 at 09:19 PM
Alanis, what does "flavors of entanglement" stands for? and, do you consider yourself musically brave? (talking about all the changes in your music)
and last, would you ever get to know me if i give you the chance for it?
Posted by: cristobal baron | January 15, 2008 at 09:19 PM
ask her if she will ever come back to latin america on a tour? she often goes to brazil, but latin america is a lot more than only brazil...(argentina, chile, peru, etc)
Posted by: andrew | January 15, 2008 at 09:36 PM
Alanis "why do so many Candians have an inferiority complex when it comes to the U.S." and "why are so many of the situations you sing about in your song "ironic" not actually ironic? Do you know the definition of irony?" These should help you get on her good side.
Posted by: Boe | January 15, 2008 at 09:37 PM
i would love if you could ask how many songs the record will have. also if she has writen anything about that book she has in mind and what is it going to be about. and what have she done all this time she had taken for herself before she started working on the record.
Posted by: myself | January 15, 2008 at 09:46 PM
do you like lorna dune cookies?
Posted by: dominic funaro | January 15, 2008 at 09:48 PM
Hey Boe, learn to spell "Canadians", and then re-ask your question.
I love the sarcasm. All Canadians get asked that question numerous times; it is one of the most irritating questions, period.
All of us aren't envious of the States. I'm not.
I'm also not dissing my neighbours. I respect America and her two greatest treasures, Mr. Steven Q. Spears, and Mr. Sean Q. Daly.
If you want to annoy her Sean, go right ahead and ask Boe's question.
Then we can have Huey Lewis II! BRING IT ON! Or the "Living in America" part of Rocky IV.....whatever works.
Posted by: Al | January 15, 2008 at 10:03 PM
LOL Al, you are such a snarky one tonight. I don't think I've seen this side of you. Uhm, I live in the US, Al. Uhm, errr uh, Sean and Steve are treasures and....
Posted by: Marissa | January 15, 2008 at 10:10 PM
I've always wanted to know if she prefers recording digital or analog? Especially with how different this new record is going to be - I'm curious on her thoughts on digital recording.
I also would like to know if she'd bring out other songs aside from "Too Hot" from her dance days song catalog in any upcoming tour in a re-tooled fashion.
Will "Underneath" and "Not As We" be on the album?
What is the new song "On The Tequila" about?
Lastly, would she ever cut her hair short again? How much longer is she gonna let it grow?
thanks!
Anthony :-)
Posted by: anthony | January 15, 2008 at 10:12 PM
I dunno, Anthony. I'm kinda digging the shaggy Alanis.
Posted by: Sean Daly | January 15, 2008 at 10:20 PM
Sorry, Marissa. Deadline stress makes me a snarky man. No insult was meant by my not mentioning you.
I've been upgraded up a few notches in the food chain: News Director!
Seriously though: I cannot stand Alanis. Argh.
Posted by: Al | January 16, 2008 at 12:45 AM
Sean you are lucky...Alanis is great.
Posted by: Mark | January 16, 2008 at 02:59 AM
Ask her if she's going to come to Europe for a tour anytime soon? And if another american tour (not just opening for Matchbox 20) is happening this year?
Posted by: Thibault Caspar | January 16, 2008 at 03:42 AM
Alanis played Sunny Jacobs in the play "The Exonerated." The Supreme Court is currently deciding whether the execution by lethal injection constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. While the answer is probably obvious, I'd like to know how she feels the Court should decide and whether she supports a complete prohibition on the death penalty.
On a lighter note, I'd like to know whether she plans to do a solo tour across the US after the tour with Matchbox 20.
Posted by: M | January 16, 2008 at 03:43 AM
Ask Alanis:
"You haven't toured Australia in almost nine years. Do you plan to return down under anytime soon?"
and
"Which of your albums do you think is overlooked and most under-rated?"
Posted by: George | January 16, 2008 at 05:38 AM
ask her what musical influences she had while creating the album... | what musical artists she's been listening to? | will her new album sound like imogen heap and frou frou albuns? or is going to be fresh? | what does she think about madonna, and if she does hear her albuns | and tell her that fans love her 1991 "alanis" and 1992 "now is the time" album, and she could give some attention to it in a new way, as least live, with rock or acoustic versions. | tell her to make more videos for her cd's like in jagged little pill era!!!
thank you!
Posted by: dudy | January 16, 2008 at 06:48 AM
Wouldn't it be ironic if you asked her what is her favourite Huey Lewis song. And would she consider doing a duet with him and then act in a movie with Gwyneth Paltrow.
Posted by: Ian from Down Under | January 16, 2008 at 09:54 PM
Would she ever do an iconoclast episode, and with whom? The ones where the pair already know each other, have a mutual respect and support of one another are the episodes that work best. Those interactions tell more about a person than personal discussion.
Posted by: Sharon | January 17, 2008 at 11:42 AM
For the person who thought all her past albums stunk, man, that's incredibly foolish to say-- to actually believe anyone cares about your opinion of her work. I actually liked Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie more than her first release, and Hands Clean, Feast on Scraps, as well as ALMOST every song she's ever done I enjoyed tremendously. In fact, were it not for a certain song on SFIJ, I know of a very good friend of mine who would be dead were it not for one song she did which he used to hold on. Now, you are welcome to your opinion, but state it as such. Don't state it as fact. In MY opinion, you have terrible taste in music. As for a question, I'd like to know where she finds herself spiritually now, as compared to the entire day long interview/show she did live on "Oxygen" in New York City? (Oxygen is also a name for a TV channel for those who weren't aware)I'd also like to ask her why she believes so many women throw away relationships with great guys, yet cling to men who treat them like Garbage?

For someone who has had the privilege of working in the music industry since her teens, I would be curious to know how she feels about the current working model for musicians- one that forces them to tour instead of record. And for someone who has worked her model to the barest bone- unplugged, Storytellers, greatest hits packages, then even re-recording one of her albums, and marketing through Starbucks- is there any way for a sensitive, cerebral musician to make a buck nowadays? Or do you hit the road?

Ask her about the "Lady Lumps" video. We (my husband and I) thought it was one of the strangest things we ever saw, and was she serious?
Posted by: Joanna | January 17, 2008 at 05:46 PM
Lady Lumps was genius! Finally getting to poke a bit of fun at someone else's song, instead of others poking fun at yours!
Sean, ask her if she likes tall blond Texans!......what? It could happen!
Posted by: John Hays | January 17, 2008 at 11:16 PM
I am SOOOO jealous that you get to meet Alanis! I love her!
Please ask her how she plans to make her release of Flavors of Entanglement & subsequent touring more interactive. She has alluded to doing so, but not been specific about how.
Ask her if she'll be doing any more visits of radio stations like she did with So Called Chaos.
Ask her one of her fav questions: Have her complete the sentence, "If you really knew me, you would know...."
