PODCAST TIME! Angering Australia
On this week's incendiary Stuck in the '80s podcast, co-host Steve Spears dubs Down Under band Midnight Oil a "one-hit wonder." Then, with a maniacal chuckle, he says that the group's lead singer, the bald menacing Peter Garrett, looks like bald menacing Batman villain Egghead. And then, as if that weren't enough, Spears finishes by raising his fist and hollering, "I refuse to recognize Australia as a continent!"
Me? I love Midnight Oil. Much as I love Bobby McFerrin, Climie Fisher, Johnny Hates Jazz and all the other one-hit wonders from 1988, who just happen to be the topic of this week's unbelievably awesome show.
For the record, I also love Australia and Egghead.
You can listen to Stuck in the '80s by clicking HERE or downloading us on iTunes. Sit back, relax and let Steve Spears' narrow worldview delight and entertain!

Sean Daly is the pop music critic for the St. Petersburg Times. His CD collection -- from Journey to Dylan, Prince to U2, Public Enemy to Stan Getz -- is much bigger and better than yours.

Hi Sean, in an effort to start posting here more and not show Spearsy all the attention, I just wanted to say how incredibly surprised I am that you like "Egghead" so much. He was a direct ripoff of "Bookworm" and not nearly as interesting. I mean c'mon, Vincent Price is cool and all, but let's admit it, Roddy McDowell kicks his butt. What is Price's signature role? The Hillarious House Of Frightenstein?? Meanwhile Roddy will forever be known as Cornelius from the original Planet Of The Apes!

Price's signature TV role as far as I'm concerned: the mad professor on the Hawaii/Tiki Idol episodes of The Brady Bunch. Plus he played a unable-to-commit magician on an episode of the Love Boat (his lovely long-suffering assistant was played by Joan Blondell.)
All of which has nothing to do with the podcast -- which was grand as always. Sawry.

Great show Sean. Easy to see why the Q man had to add Australian bands Midnight Oil and The Church. The year was very short on One Hit Wonder talent. Just to finish my opinion on the whole Midnight Oil saga. They has hit singles from the late 70's onwards in Austraia, but were clearly a bigger live band and also had huge success with their albums. And my last finally, If Steve can't stand his voice, he should catch up with the way he dances on stage. I kindly refer to it as autism on ice (frozen and tablet form).

Excellent call Sean. I used to love Egghead on Batman when I used to watch it on re-runs.
P.S. Never knew it was Vincent Price.....go figure.
