What's in My Bag? Ben Stiller spending money, time at L.A.'s heavenly Amoeba Music

What's your favorite record store? I have a bunch of them: Princeton Record Exchange in N.J., Sound Garden in Baltimore, Bananas Music in St. Pete. But strap me to a lie detector, and I'd have to 'fess up that Amoeba Music on the Sunset Strip is my ultimate choice for flat-out nirvana. I've spent hours in there, and still haven't seen half the place. They've started a new video series called "What's in My Bag?" grilling customers, famous and otherwise, on what they've just purchased. It's pretty cool. Here's the full list. The Dave Grohl one is pretty good, too. I like the Ben Stiller 'cause he seems genuinely flummoxed, still getting over the daze of browsing that hellzapoppin' shrine to pop culture.

"Back in the day" Radio Doctors in downtown Milwaukee, WI. I worked there, I had friends and relatives who worked there. We were "the" destination for rock stars, sports stars in town or anyone who wanted music from people who knew music. The stories I could tell......

(by the way - does anyone else remember "45s"?).

Good stuff, guys. I'm a geek for record shop talk. In college, at Syracuse, when I just started buying CDs, I built my Dylan collection at Record Theatre on dreary Erie Blvd.

Fresh outta school, I spent my checks from the Washington City Paper at a lil' indie called Melody Music, in the heart of Dupont Circle.

And once or twice a month, my boy Spearsy and I will wander into Daddy Kool in downtown St. Pete. I rarely leave without a fresh piece of vinyl.

You are so right about Amoeba. That's the ultimate place to go and even if you been through the whole store they just keep on adding stuff.

Joe

this is a cool record store in Chicago suburb Oak Park, IL. It even has an Elvis shrine.

I spent large chunks of my time in Hawaii in the aisles of Jellys (both the main store in downtown Honolulu and the one out in Aiea). I'd stock up on import albums and CDs, and then head over to the other side of the store an pick up the latest issue of "Q" magazine and some comic books (this was before we started calling them "graphic novels").

Good times.
