Davis v. Bunkley | Main | ready for some football »

Any plans for basketball tab?

Q: I was wondering if there's any way that the sports section could cover a preseason basketball preview in the same form or fashion that they do for the football season?

Frank Pastor, Regional Sports Editor: While we will continue to produce separate boys and girls basketball previews for each of the five counties in our coverage area, we have no plans at present to produce a special section similar to what we do for football. We tried a basketball section a few years ago, but the response from readers was lukewarm. Our experience has been that football far outweighs all other high school sports, including basketball, in terms of both attendance and reader interest.

I have noticed basketball isn't very well attended or covered here in Florida. I wonder why that is? As a matter of fact at my son's High school last year the girl's volleyball and basketball teams had more attendance then the guys basketball team did.

Maybe if you would promote basketball better than interest and attendance would improve. By the way, when was the last state champion in football from Pinellas county? For that matter, when was the last final four team in football from Pinellas county?... I believe basketball has had about ten different teams make it to the final four in the past few years from Pinellas county! Don't you think that maybe BASKETBALL deserves at least a special section equivalent to football?

I would love to see a special basketball section for both girls and boys hoops. I consistently scour the internet to gather as much info as I can on high school hoops. I love the others sports but hoops is king.

DUH FOOTBALL....

The least you could do is a seasonal sports special section. I'm sure that would gernerate enough advertising revenue to pay for it. That is what the deciding factor is, isn't it?

Don't tell us it's the reader who doesn't want it. That's not true.

DUH TIMES SPORTS EDITORS!

If you were to ad up all the basketball games that were put on TV verses all the Football games I'm sure you'd find that more basketball is watched than football.

Some people think that Armwood's bsketball team will be really good this year and next year. Some of their players are really good for instance senior Jason Anthony, junior Adam Sollazo, and junior Cornelius Fowler who is going to be pretty good.

Armwood junior point guard Adam Sollazzo standing at 6'5 is a great ball handler and has amazing court vision and can really take the ball to the hoop finishing with authority. This year he has two great big men down under in Senior Jason Anthony and junior Cornelius Fowler. Cornelius has really improved from last year he is a great defensive player. Standing at 6'5 with long arms he blocks anything in the paint. Now senior Jason Anthony will be one of the best players in the state this year. He is a powerful big man that just can't be stopped. Look forward to Armwood being a great force this year.

When football is finally over this year, can we serioulsy get on with basketball. Last year we were reading football articles well into the new year. There are some great athletes this year that deserve the same hype (posters) as the football teams.
