Jay Austin named Northeast coach
Jay Austin was named the new Northeast football coach, taking over for his father Jerry, who retired after 28 years at the helm of the Vikings.
Jay Austin, a 1990 Northeast grad, has spent the last 10 years as a Vikings assistant. He will remain a special education teacher at the school.
"There were some very good candidates," NE principal Patricia Wright said. "Jay is going to provide for us that familiarity. We also wanted someone to look at the overall program - not just the sport of football -- someone who can help kids become good citizens and excel academically, as well as (show) character."
Wright said the school's search committee interviewed six applicants last weekend, including Osceola coach George Palmer, as well as David Angelo (Largo), Joseph Boyer (Indian Rocks), Bill Berry (Clearwater High) and Dave Cleppe (Gibbs).
Some other Pinellas County football coaching updates:
*Gibbs -- The Gladiators first head coaching search in about 17 years is heating up. With long-time coach Al Davis retiring, Gibbs received more than 50 applicants from all over the country (Las Vegas, Washington, Alabama, Tennessee).
Gibbs assistant assistant principal Kyle Johnson said the list will be widdled down to a group of 10, which will be interviewed all day Saturday.
*St. Petersburg Catholic - Interviews are finished and the school plans to decide on its new coach by Feb. 1, AD Ann Marie Mancuso said. Interim coach Mike Lynch said he was interested in coming back, but the Barons also considered outside applicants.
*Canterbury -- School is taking applications until the end of January to take over for Shannon Brooks, who left to take the offensive coordinator job at Lakewood.
YOUR TAKE: Who will fill the other 3 openings?
-- JOE SMITH

What a bag job.

I think that is great news for the NEHI community. I have said all along that Jay earned that spot; he will do a great job.
Who cares about the SPC job if the AD is sticking around...
And with Cantebury, whew, who would want to follow such a jugernaught as Brooks?
Posted by: | January 16, 2007 at 05:24 PM
Congratulations coach! My son is on the team there at Northeast and the kids love Austin. I think he will do a fine job. The kids, faculty, and staff are all behind him.
Posted by: | January 16, 2007 at 06:31 PM
ahhhh bag job, is that sour grapes. he will be a good one.
Posted by: | January 16, 2007 at 06:39 PM
Congrats to Jay! He will do a great Job! I know all of the kids & they are very excited about keeping the coaches. This will be a very smooth transition & will be a lot of fun!!!!!!!
Great Job Nehi People!

This county is such a joke. Only one candidate even brought a coaching portfolio to the interview and it wasn't Austin. Isn't it time to give some of these coaches who've proven themselves both in and out of state a chance. That's why this county is the laughing stock of Florida football.
Posted by: | January 16, 2007 at 09:17 PM
Its ok little guy, maybe you will get an interview at SPC or Canterbury, maybe even Gibbs? If not you can keep hanging up north, maybe when Rick goes back to CLW you will get your chance?
Posted by: | January 16, 2007 at 10:32 PM
1032, its not who you think it is. I'm just a supporter of his. Why would Rick ever go back to Clearwater?
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 06:57 AM
This county makes poor choices when taking head coaches. Look at the hires just in the past few years. Tarpon? Palm Harbor had a 1 year wonder. Lakewood? Bogie? keep up the great work Pinellas county and we will never get any wins over that bridge.
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 07:44 AM
What ever
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 07:52 AM
The good old boys of NEHI pulled it off, they helped Jr. get the job, Why doesn't someone ask who was all on the interview committee?
P.S. Jay Knows that he is guilty of grabbing that player in the locker.
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 08:02 AM
Everyone and their mother new the other Austin would get the job so watever no suprise
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 08:36 AM
Well if Ms.wright likes press in the paper about her coaches, then she made the right decision. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 08:53 AM
canterbury needs a coach who loves to teach the game with so many young kids i can think of one real good one but can you get him to budge from o/c at ccc. maybe the AD needs to find out this would be good for the area.
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 10:48 AM
6:57AM your guess is as good as mine as to why Rick would want to go back to Clearwater after getting Largo noticed on the state seen. However word has it from very reliable sources that Ole Rick said that the day Bostic retires he will be turning in his resignation at Largo and applying for the Clearwater Job.

I play for NEHI, theres nobody here who could say choosing Jay Austin as head coach was a bad decision... You people have no idea what you're talking about... Half of you people are high school athletes that never made it... You people will say all this and not put your names.. cowards and punks

Also a petition was given to Mrs. Wright stating how much we wanted Coach Jay as head coach and how much he means to our team... you people don't like to get the facts... It's better off if you don't say anything... You don't realize it's what the kids want. I sat down in front of Mrs. Wright and explained to her why I think he would be the best person for the job, many other players did the same..
Posted by: Pat Hanley # 52 | January 17, 2007 at 11:13 AM
# 52 have you made it anywhere yet, your too short to make it to the next level
Posted by: Gibbs # 73 | January 17, 2007 at 11:45 AM
Let's talk about the letter of support for Jay. Since coach Jay was behind the idea of having the kids write the letter so the assistant coaches wouldn't lose their jobs, if a new coach came in.
P.S. My good friend is on the team.
Posted by: Gibbs # 73 | January 17, 2007 at 11:49 AM
Obviously, the good ol boy network is alive and kickin. At least the kids will still have somoene to cuss at them on the sideline. Maybe the coaches will dress a little more professional like the other coaches in pinellas county, instead of lookin like they just spent all day cutting grass.

1st team all county
Posted by: pat hanley | January 17, 2007 at 12:17 PM
Some of you people are so funny...get over yourselves! At least NEHI held interviews and opened the process to outside candidates. That is more than can be said of other Pinellas schools.
And whoever made the comment about cursing on the sideline, grow up! The feminization of America continues to make me ill. Remember when men were permitted to be men and passion was still part of the game? Jay will put together a solid staff of knowledgable assistants (many of which are already there) and do fine.
And a word of advice to the player from Gibbs - You should really mind your own house and stop worrying about NEHI. Gibbs has been a mess for years and you finally have the opportunity to turn things around if your school administration will make a hire based on what matters (not race). Perhaps you should rally your teammates and parents to give input into what you as a team would like to see be your next coach.
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 12:39 PM
Very well put 12:39.........and let's not forget Gibbs #73.....#52 Nehi will be waiting for you next season. I wouldn't be stupid enough to mess with him over a stupid blog no matter how tall he is.....benches 335 #'s & squats 570 #'s...that's probably stronger than you could ever dream. Faster and smarter too.

There are only 5 quality head coaches in this county. In my opinion.
1. Rodriguez - Largo (enough said)
2. Davis - C-side
3. Palmer - Osceola, does a lot with talent available.
4. Hudson - East Lake, does a lot with not much talent.
5. Fabrizio - St. Pete, from what I've heard and seen, he will do things right.
This is not just based on wins and losses, but overall program.
(off-season cond., weights, getting kids in college, as well as coaches who know how to hire and keep quality assistants.
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 01:13 PM
If Gibbs wants a quality head coach who will get things done on and off the field, take a look at Dave Angelo (off. coordinator at Largo).
He's been voted the off. coordinator of they year the last two years by the coaches in this county. Before Largo, he was the def. coordinator at Cincinnati Moeller high school in Ohio. Which is one of the top programs in the country. He coached in two state championship games, while there. He is an upstanding individual who will get kids to college as well.
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 01:23 PM
Does anyone even know who the Gibbs canidates are? it seems to be a big secret?
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 02:05 PM
Oooh. How brave putting your name on a post praising your new head coach. Really ballzy. If you said you wanted someone different and signed your name you might convince me you had a pair. Papa was old and could not control the locker room and win like he used too. Can Jr. do any better? Time will tell, but getting your name in the paper for losing control of your locker room is not a good way to start. Plus having your players out bragging on web sites and stacking newspapers polls is not a great start other. To get to the next level ususally takes alot more class.
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 02:50 PM
Cindy Mobberly get off the blog and quit pretending to be players from Gibbs. I know the coaches at Gibbs and they don't even dress a #73. Probably a good thing because it seems to have the Nehi boys fired up. Get a life lady!

Pat Hanley 1st team all county lets get real here 73 for Gibbs straight garbage
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 08:33 PM
To 1154...It's too bad they all don't cuy grass, they would make a hell of alot more money and wouldn't have you losers talking bad about them.
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 09:46 PM
Gibbs/Canterbury should pursue (no particular order):
1. George Palmer (Osc)
2. Shannon Brooks (Lakewood)
3. Bob Hudson (East Lake)
4. David Angelo (Largo)
5. Bill Berry (Clearwater)
6. Dedrick Dodge (Victory)
7. David Cleppe (Gibbs)
8. Todd Donohoe (Armwood)
9. Matt Lepain (Largo)
10. Mike Anderson (Dunedin)
11. Jean Gordon (Bayshore)
Posted by: | January 17, 2007 at 11:10 PM
Why would Coach Hudson leave East Lake and go to Gibbs?
Posted by: Football fan | January 17, 2007 at 11:39 PM
Didn't Donohoe flop at Dunedin?
Isn't he a JV coach at Armwood?
Hudson would go to Gibbs because you can actually win there in the playoffs.
Gibbs is a gold-mine.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 06:53 AM
Donohoe didn't flop at Dunedin. I think they went 7-3 one year if I recall correctly. He coaches the Varsity DL and is the Strength coach.
My opinion is they should give it to Hudson. He's done a great job at East Lake.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 07:50 AM
That was a list of good coaches in this county...with representation from the north, middle and south...some one has taken the time and paid attention....to bad you dont hire!!
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 07:56 AM
As for the coaches at NEHI cutting grass.
I know plenty of people cutting grass that are making 6 figure incomes.
And as far as dressing in matching shirts. I think the coaches at Canterbury were the best dressed coaches in the county 2 years in a row and how many games did the win. In Jerry's famous words
"I ain't never won a game by lookin pretty"
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 09:59 AM
I agree, 959. But, I do believe this county needs to represent itself
professionally.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 10:05 AM
I beleive in dress for success. But I dont't think football coaches should have to dress alike. They are not scientologists they are football coaches and as long as they are teaching kids right from wrong and how to be good men that is whats important. Not this materialistic crap. If the county wanted coaches to wear uniforms they would provide them and not expect the boosters to pay for them. The booster money is for the kids and such things. Not for the coaches to look pretty on the sidelines. It's not always how you dress its how you act.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 10:20 AM
I have a question for good ol Jerry where did all the money for parking and concession get spent this year and years past? Just curious.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 10:21 AM
I agree it's not how you look on the sideline, it's how you act, North East coaches do neither. Look like fools act like fools. You don't have to look pretty to win games like Jerry said, however their is a thing called professionalism, and representing your school. North East does none of the above. And that is a FACT !!!!
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 11:34 AM
The money ended up in his coaches pockets for doing extra duties, it wasn't spent on the kids that play football. By asking the question what happened to the money, man that is a whole new can of worms, that would be a great article for the newspaper to investigate.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 11:48 AM
Like the person before said, booster is for the kids. Not to pay coaches extra money.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 11:50 AM
That's not necessarily true. This county pays coaches so horribly, both assistant and head coaches. Taking money from the boosters to pay an assistant coach who wouldn't normally be paid is very common. I don't think that some of you non-coaches realize how much time that coaches put into the programs.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 11:56 AM
The booster clubs always pay coaches additional money. Atleast at successful programs. There is nothing wrong with that. The money a coach gets paid fpr coaching is for in season only that is why it is split between fall and spring. They are not paid for all the other things such as phonecalls at night or weekends. Boosters should take care of their SUCCESSFUL coaches.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 12:06 PM
Jerry has not been successful in 3 years. With the best talent in county except maybe Gibbs. They should be spending the money on the frigign kids.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 12:23 PM
What are you going to buy them?
You have to understand a lot of items are centrall funded so the extra money can't go to certain things. Yes, the kids should get cloth and maybe even some money to go to camps. But what else?
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 01:22 PM
It is illegal in Pinellas for the school to buy shirts for the kids, they can buy team shirts & issue them.
its true
check the riles
ask your Bookkeeper!

some poeple just hate ne because they never beat them. Jerry does not give a rip about what you say. but if he want to fight i know he used be real good. so bring your brother when you are ready
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 04:25 PM
Post 2:12 is Partially correct, If you are working with an internal(school based) Booster club: You CAN'T buy the kids anything that they will "own". You can purchase shirts & issue them as team uniforms. The rule is broken on a regular basis, but it does exsist.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 04:29 PM
4:25, are you retarded?
If so, I apologize for asking.
You must've went to NEH.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 04:39 PM
You can buy epuipment. Video equipment, software to make highlight films for college. Believe me they need lots of things.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 04:42 PM
Lets pull the books at NEHI and you will see where the money is spent. Trust me it's not where it's suppose to be. I know first hand where it goes, and it is not for the kids. That is the problem at NEHI it's all about winning and NOT the kids !!!!
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 05:07 PM
Actually equipment, is centrally funded.

12:06 Dude you are acting like a true coach, saying coaches put in so many hours and make phone calls on nights and weekends, you know it doesn't pay alot when you go into coaching, so does it make it right for the booster to give you extra money, you don't have to coach, I thought these guys coach because they really enjoy it. Like someone said before it's about the kids.

Cindy Mobberly for head coach, she has all the great ideas, the best one was the artificial strobe lights she had installed underneath the cheerleaders to make them look like they were actually doing something thats where the money goes!

The only people saying that Jay Austin is not going to be a successful head coach are those that have never played a down of football in their lives or those that don't understand how qualified and experienced he is in the sport of football. All of the football players have fought hard to get Jay the coaching job, so why should anyone but the players matter anyway? Instead of all the negative comments and accusations, why don't all of you let us show you what we can do this upcoming football season. All the negativity is fueling our fire...it is causing us to become "ONE BAD RIDE!!" And last time I checked, not one of the team members has complained about where the money from the booster club goes. Frankly, nobody cares!!!
Posted by: Armando Sanchez #12 | January 18, 2007 at 08:29 PM
Mobberly give it up babe. You should put as much time in on your marriage maybe that would help. Pretty pathetic life, living vicariously through your daughter. Bloggimg on a FOOTBALL site. What a shame! You have gotten yourself into something you cannot control and it is eating you up. Good for you Nehi players that are setting her unstable ass straight. Let it go, everyone involved is aware of your antics and are aware of your position. It is tired........... Good luck to Austin and the entire team. Thank god I don't have to deal with all that drama at my school.
Posted by: | January 18, 2007 at 09:15 PM
I have been involved in a booster club in the past. The assistants who are non teachers do not receive any money from the county/school and it is the booster club who pays them about $1500 per year and give them gift certicates at the end of the year. They do this for the love of the game. The season is now 12 weeks with the bye and preseason and another 3 weeks of practice before the season starts. Not to mention about 3 weeks of spring practice. Do the math, if you multiply 3 hrs per day at a minimum x 5 days a week for 18 weeks, it equals 270 hours. That works out to a little more than $5.00 per hour if my math is right. You can make more flipping burgers at McDonalds so if this isn't coaching for the love of the game, I don't know what is.

I thought this forum was supposed to be about who should fill the other 3 coaching positions. Who would be such a chickenshit, that they have to hide behind this blog to make personal attacks on Cindy Mobberly? You have some problem w/Mrs. Mobberly, come down to the school one day & talk to me about it in person. Plus, any of you that are talking crap about Jay, you've never played for him, so you don't know what kind of coach he is.
Posted by: Dylan Mundella # 71 | January 19, 2007 at 08:09 AM
The people here are unbelievable? Who is out there complaining about coaches getting paid? Its definitely somo one who has never coached?
Why would some one get mad because a head coach is going out of his way to keep good assistants, that is crazy?
Believe it or not assistant coaches have families too!!
So besides helping raise everyone elses kids, they have thier own! this is unbelievable?
If the county would pay a little better then this wouldnt be such a problem, It should not be the Head coach or booster clubs responsibility to pay the kids, but around here that seems to be the only way to keep continuity,
If the Northeast coach is paying his guys for extra time? GOOD FOR HIM! It probably explains why he has loyal assistants. I know that Countryside takes care of there people & they have awsome assistants.
I hope every head coach reads this or at least the ones that are not paying there coaches for the extra time, & gets with the program!!
Assistants if you think you are getting burned on pay here in P-County?
Take this into mind:
Orlando:
Assistant coaches: $2500
Weight lifting coach: $5000 (on top of the $2500)
Texas:
Head Coach:
60-100K NO TEACHING
Assistants: 5000-1500
Weight lifting 5-10K
Georgia:
HC 60-100K
OC/DC: 10-60K
Position coaches 5000 +
These numbers may seem big, but that is still crap money
You must love it to do it
Good luck coaches
You have to remeber, In any type of business you get what you pay for!!!!!

Back to original question- Who will fill remaining 3 positions?
Posted by: | January 19, 2007 at 08:21 AM
I talked to one of the kids at NE yesterday and I was asked if I ever seen the blog, I told him no, so when I got home last night from the girls basketball game I started to read what everyone was saying. First lets talked about Pat Hanley and Sanchez, two great young men who love the game of football, all that they are doing is supporting their coaches, which I think is great, first class kids all the way.
Let's leave the boosters and Cindy Mobberly out of this, Cindy is a great person and would do anything to help the kids and the coaches and NE. she would never go on here and say things like I am reading here today. Let's don't get personal with the parents the kids and the coaches at NE. Now let's me mention Jay, Jay and his coaching staff have some great idea's for NE football, Jay will make changes only for the good of everyone, changes take time it doesn't happen over night. Jay will do a fine job as head coach. Let's all just give him a fair chance.

Wow. Support for the new coah by two starting players and an employee.
Jay get control of your program and keep your team from calling out other teams, players and parents on a website. It make you look chickenspit.
It is about the same as showing up in the newspaper for not being able to control your locker room. Get some pride and control. Stop airing the dirty laundry in public. It is humiliating.
Just shut everyone up and win for a change, make the playoffs, win a district and it will shut everbody else up. We have not been getting it done for three years now. Take what is great raw talent get a little more creative and shut everyone up.

Back to the original question of this blog- Who will fill the remaining 3 positions?
Posted by: | January 19, 2007 at 01:52 PM
George Palmer
Posted by: | January 19, 2007 at 02:17 PM
Armwood coach. We need a change! I read they have like 15 or 20 kids that can bench pres 300lbs. Are they on steroids, working harder or what? What's the secret over there?
Posted by: | January 19, 2007 at 02:37 PM
I agree! Let's get somebody from out of state or at least from another county. It gets old hearing about Plant, Armwood, Hillsborough all the time! It's time for Pinellas to win a state championship!
Posted by: | January 19, 2007 at 04:40 PM
Pinellas will never win a state championship until we get rid of centralized athletics and parents and the community step up to the plate. We have some of the best coaches in the nation thats why they are getting jobs in states like Georgia and Texas all the time. Pinellas county is full of hippocrits they say they want to be part of the program but never step up.
So if you want to cry and complain about the coches maybe you should look in the mirror first.
Pinellas county is like a Buccaneer fan they are fans only when a team is winning.
Examples
1. Why would someone living in south St. Pete consider themselves a C-side fan when they have no connection to the school?
2. I was away in the military when NEHI was on their 40 win run and all I read and heard was NEHI this NEHI that. My mom said adults were walking around wearing Nehi shirts at the stores and everywhere. Games were at or near capacity they even had a team chaplin on the field, four or five athletic trainers and so on. Then I got home in 2001 and nobody was saying anything. They only had one trainer and what no chaplin.
So if you have the time to sit here and complain get you lazy ass off the couch and get to your local high school and support them instead of bashing them.
Posted by: | January 19, 2007 at 05:25 PM
I think Northeast had a couple of volunteer coaches. I wonder how much Jerry paid them and how if the boosters didn't.
Posted by: | January 19, 2007 at 05:30 PM
Why can Plant and Armwood win state championships? Why are not all thier coahes working in Texas and Georgia?
You NEHI fans are pathetic. Neither of those teams runs a wing T. Armwood doesnt have midgets playing defensive takle, and four kids going D1. Plant has a QB who doesnt suck and a coach who is not afraid to let him pass the ball more than four times a game.
Oh and by the way you never hear about them losing control of thier locker room in the press. They also dont go on to web sites and talk down Gibbs High school or anyone else. They dont have to they worry about thier own bussiness.
Largo will break through if the coach stays. Gibbs, NEHI, and Boggie all have more talent than him but he still wins.
Posted by: | January 20, 2007 at 09:27 AM
People say it's all about the Jimmy's and the Joe's, but I'll take a group of coaches who can RUN THE SHOW over Jimmy's and Joe's anyday. Best of course is Jimmy's and Joe's who play for coaches who run the show.
Posted by: | January 20, 2007 at 02:19 PM
The best coaches who run the show are all over at LARGO!
Posted by: | January 20, 2007 at 03:40 PM
Hey Rick, enjoy the praises while they last as it is clear that Pinellas fans only care about the here and now...a couple of years ago Jerry walked on water. It really is pathetic.

I know for a fact that Rodrigueze does not pay attention to this blog. He could care what other people think about him. He is in it for the right reasons. He knows that you will alw3ays have critics, especially in this youth league oriented county.

Hey January 20, 2007 at 09:27 AM
"Why can Plant and Armwood win state championships?"
Like I said before they do not have centralized athletics over there. Also they have dedicated fans and boosters just like your comments suggests you know very little about high school sports.
"Why are not all thier coaches working in Texas and Georgia?"
Once again this shows how little youknow. Polk county alone lost 3 head coaches to Georgia just last year. Northeast Lost acoach to Texas just a year or 2 ago. Coaches are leaving the whole state due to money.
"Neither of those teams runs a wing T."
Once again this shows your intelligence.
Armwood runs a lot of the same plays a standard wing T team runs. Plant also runs the bucksweeps.
"They dont have to they worry about thier own bussiness."
You will have to explain this comment to it makes no sense at all.
"Largo will break through if the coach stays. Gibbs, NEHI, and Boggie all have more talent than him but he still wins."
You just keep showing your ignorance Rick has not even applied for another job. So why wouldn't he stay. Is he getting an offer from a state that actually pays a coach
Posted by: | January 21, 2007 at 10:41 PM
Any news on SPC, Canterbury or Gibbs? There must be somebody who can shed light on these jobs and to who the leading candidates might be.
Posted by: | January 22, 2007 at 10:38 AM
I know that Gibbs wanted to "keep all the interviews to 30 minutes." That doesn't sound like they really opened it up. Sounds like they know who they want, so they will spend as litte time as possible with the other candidates.
Posted by: | January 22, 2007 at 11:07 AM
I have heard that at least 2 assistant coaches from CCC have applied for the SPC & Canterbury openings, and I have heard that Gibbs is a done deal, and has been since the end of the season. It sounds like the interviews (as mentioned above) were a mere formality at Gibbs, and if they go with the "king" of their candidates, I think it will be yet another sad testament to what Pinellas County football is all about!
Posted by: | January 22, 2007 at 11:33 AM
Are you sure you don't mean the "queen" of their candidates?
Posted by: | January 22, 2007 at 02:02 PM
To add another point to the ignorance of the 9:27 AM poster, if you recall about a year or two ago, Callahan was real close to getting a job at a high school in Georgia. The point is that it doesn't matter where you coach at or who you are, money talks and to get on here and bash a school or schools because coaches leave for Texas or Georgia is crazy. It's called improving your life and/or looking for a better opportunity. Why don't you try it sometime, it is really fun!!!
Posted by: | January 22, 2007 at 03:31 PM
I'm getting a good laugh at the person or persons that are trashing the interview process at these schools and making comments like, "typical crap hire by Pinellas County School." I can only gather two things about these people, they are either someone who didn't get an interview or someone who is tired of getting passed over for head coaching jobs. Get a grip!!! You say that these schools should open up to outside candidates...That's great and Gibbs posted their position on the FHSAA website. But do you honestly think that you are going to attract tons of out-of-state candidates with the way insurance and taxes are in this county??? A teacher cannot get ahead in this area and the result of that is the pool of coaches will not be what everyone wants it to be. I believe that there are incredible asst. coaches in this area and they will be just fine when they take over some of these programs. You have to remember, everyone starts somewhere, and whether you like the hire or not, bashing them isn't doing anybody especially yourself any good. What exactly is it that you want in a candidate??? If Gibbs wants to limit the interviews to 30 minutes, that is their call. If the person is already picked, that's the way it is...welcome to the real world. People in the position to hire have a certain set of criteria and favorites that fit that criteria right off the bat.
We can argue the results of these hires all day long. The bottom line is that it typically is not the coaching in the county that causes the mediocrity, it is the fact that we have a talent pool that is widely dispersed in the county and centralized athletics doesn't promote and reward winning. If county mediocrity is your issue, stand up and speak out to the board or join your local high school coaching staff and make a difference. And when you finally get to run your own program, hire the best coaches you can find.
There is hope for your issue, however, Bill Parcells is available. Call Gibbs and tell them to give him 30 minutes.

Good job Mundella!! I am sure you will have the time of your life playing football in Kentucky. Good luck and remember it's a free education. Have fun BUD!!! KICK ASS
Posted by: | January 22, 2007 at 06:29 PM
God. Plant passed the ball 40 times a game not 4!! You are so full of crap. Plant and NEHI could not be run more differently on offense. Put their coach has confidence in their QB.
The Plant coach came from Jesuit. I guess small catholic school coaches can coach circles around old jer.

i know for a fact that the o/c at ccc did not apply at spc or canterbury when i talked to him last week he said both of those coaching jobs were taken. i asked if he was staying at ccc he said we will see.
Posted by: | January 24, 2007 at 12:56 PM
If Copana (SP?)told you that they were taken, I am sure you asked the follow-up: By whom?
Posted by: | January 24, 2007 at 03:24 PM
Jerry Austin of course!!!
Posted by: | January 25, 2007 at 03:21 PM
Okay, enough drama already! I am sure that somebody can shead some light on who will be filling the HC positions at these three schools. I am dissapointed that we have not even heard about finalists or even the applicant lists. Why are these schools not generating any excitment/anticipation for their programs by cooperating with the press? Is the press even asking?
Posted by: | January 29, 2007 at 09:38 AM
i heard a rumor that the o/c at ccc has resigned any truth to it ?
Posted by: | February 02, 2007 at 09:35 AM
Sounds like SPC is getting ready to announce.
Posted by: | February 02, 2007 at 10:03 AM
do not think it is spc. i heard it could be something else.
Posted by: | February 02, 2007 at 12:05 PM
Then why else would Copana leave CCC it sure the heck is not for Canterbury.
Posted by: | February 02, 2007 at 05:26 PM
Why not leave CCC for Canterbury? He almost did it 3 years ago before they gave it to Brooks. Dont underestimate what a head coaching title can do on ones resume. Outside of this county, or even this state, if you were a head coach, then you must have done something right, and it will sit well with whomever you are applying. There are so many intangibles that go along with being a head coach, and experience is the best teacher!
Posted by: | February 06, 2007 at 12:20 PM
Copona at SPC...must be.
Posted by: | February 06, 2007 at 12:21 PM
mancuso said (cap) did not apply at spc
he was asked but he did not apply.
he said as far as he knows he is still at ccc unless something came up last week.

What no signings from the Far East. Guess Ole' Jerry and family did the usual fo getting out to promote the kids that play for them. Or maybe they are getting ready to go to a clinic. No that can't be it after 18 years of coaching and going to numerous clinics to learn new things I have never seen any of the NEHI coaches old or NEW at any clinics.
Just thoughts.
Posted by: | February 08, 2007 at 02:02 PM
Hey 2:02 I thought that the $$ that was raised went for clinics, recruiting tapes, stamps, etc..
You meen that is not true?
Posted by: | February 08, 2007 at 02:05 PM
Paper said Northeast signed 3. Dylan Mundella, Chris Julius, and Corey Liehn. With 2 more are possible late signees. You must be too excited to blog before you get your facts. That is okay. It happens on here all the time.
P.S. They only started 5 or 6 seniors. Not bad signing half your senior class ON signing day.
Posted by: Rivals area scout | February 09, 2007 at 04:44 PM
I missed the NEHI signings. Who did they sign with?
Posted by: | February 10, 2007 at 12:39 PM
mundella to murray, liehn to webber, julius to merced. it was in the paper on signing day. congrats fellas.
Posted by: | February 11, 2007 at 12:05 AM
After Mundellda comes on here and says how he is this great D1 stud he goes to a 1AA Eastern Kenucky piece of crap school?
Typical NEHI Austin crap. Stuff polls pound your chest with nothing behind it. The Scott kis is twice the player no matter how much crap you talk about beinhg the best in the county.
Webber, Mercer, Murray? SPC sends three kids to West Virginia and one to Misouri and you all write post saying Misouri is a doormat and they won't really get in.
You are jealous pieces of crap. SOmeone gets their kids into real D1 schools and you cry like little girls.
Crappy schools for crappy football players. Great schools for great football players.
Austin does such a great job. Hire his kid, he went too about three division 1AA schools to play football himself.
Posted by: | February 13, 2007 at 09:27 AM
Why would you get on here and bash 3 teenage kids who are going on to get an education and continue to play ball. I do not get that. Why has this thing turned to bashing kids? Bash the coaches all you want, but the kids do not deserve it. You are definitely not in the know because all the coaches I have talked to spoke highly of Mundella, Liehn and Julius.
P.S. From what my contacts have said, Mundella was a great player but a tad too short for d-1's to take. Mundella is also favored to win the state championship in wrestling. Liehn broke his leg and missed 8 games so not much film for him. Probably would of gone 1-aa as well. Let the kids enjoy their time, don't bash them.
Posted by: rivals area scout | February 13, 2007 at 10:25 AM
ALL THAT TALENT, ALL THOSE D-1'S WHY DO YOU SUCK SO BAD! YOU ALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED FOR GOING 5-5 WITH 4 GIMMES NOT FOR CHEATING. SHITTY COACHING AND THE COACH IS GONE. THANK GOD LYNCH CAME IN AND STRAIGHTENED IT OUT. NICE RECRUITTING CLASS, MAYBE CRENETI WILL DO IT RIGHT!
Posted by: | February 13, 2007 at 10:28 AM
Because Mundella came on and said how he was the best d-linman in the county.
Becuase he said he was better than the kid at St Pete kid who is going division 1. He openss his mouth a talks crap about other people and cant back it up.
The kid from SPC goes D1 at Misouri and NEHI jerks start running him down.
When you are a classes piece of crap who talks aother down it comes back to you. Eastern Kentucky mouth breathing wannabe D1 football player.

Just looked at Fishers blog. Did not see anything but anonymous post. Mostly positive. Why do you make such negative comments? I don't think anything positive has come from this blog.

Congrats to Jay Austin! Having been a student at NE during the Jerry Austin era I know what an outstanding coach he is and I'm sure his son will follow! NE has an excellent football program with good kids who are great athletes! Really sad that people have to rip on the school, the coaches, the principal, the kids just to get their point across! Unless you have been part of the school, the staff, the football team or the Austin family I don't really see where you have any room to say anything! Best of luck Vikings and Coach Austin!

Loving the changes that coach Austin is doing with the program already. New wieght room, fund raisers, And best of all a whole new attitude at the school.

LEt me tell you. Jay Austin is a stand up guy. I have been close personal friends with him for over 20 years, and he has no intentions othet than to do the best for NEHI or any other school he may be the coach at. All you naysayers are out of your mind. He is not only a great person but one hell of a coach.
