Marve To Be Named Mr. Football
Plant High quarterback Robert Marve, who led the Panthers to the Class 4A championship this past season, is expected to be named the state's Mr. Football later today.
A spokesman with the Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program, which sponsors the award, confirmed Monday that Marve had won the honor. The spokesman added that Panthers coach Bob Weiner had won the state's Coach of the Year award.
Marve finished the 2006 season with state single-season records for passing yardage (4,343), touchdowns (48) and completions (278) while leading Plant to a 15-0 season. He becomes the second Hillsborough County player to be named Mr. Football, joining 1997 winner Zain Gilmore of Robinson.
Lakeland tailback Chris Rainey, a University of Florida commitment who led the Dreadnaughts to the 5A title, was among the Mr. Football finalists.
