5 Questions Entering Spring Football

Tp_256851_hell_allsunmug_5Call this our spring two-minute drill -- a quick look at what we consider five of the most burning questions entering May:

(Pictured: Right - Armwood's Matt Patchan. Times photo - Ken Helle. Below - Berkeley Prep coach Dominick Ciao. Times photo - Fraser Hale. Click to enlarge.)

1) Who will be the 'air' apparent to Robert Marve at Plant?

Amid a wicked game of phone tag Monday with Bob Weiner, the Panthers fourth-year coach confirmed 6-foot-1 junior Aaron Murray steps into what now ranks as one of South Tampa's most high-profile jobs.

Clearly, no one's expecting Murray to be Marve, and considering the talent of his supporting cast and strength of Plant's district, Murray may not have to be a replicate of the reigning Florida Mr. Football to guide Plant to an eight- or nine-win season.

Remember, the Panthers return glue-handed senior wideout Derek Winter, fleet tailback Lovell Jackson, safety/receiver cornelius Gallon and defensive stalwarts Chris Breit and Patrick Carter, among others. What's more, their new district -- which also includes Jefferson, Blake and Leto -- is pretty forgiving.

Murray "started for us at strong safety at the beginning of the year last year before he injured his arm," Weiner said via voice mail. "He will be a tremendous, tremendous player and he's an outstanding kid."

2) Is the Armwood dynasty fading?

The convenient answer may be yes, but we're not certain. Consider: Last year the Hawks returned only two defensive starters, had a brand-new starting offensive line, lost tailback Eric Smith for most of the year to an elbow injury, and still finished 11-2.

This year, Smith is healthy, six starters (including the best linebacker you'll see all year) return on defense, and Freedom transfer Matt Patchan brings an injection of major Division I talent to a far more seasoned offensive line.

Patchan and fellow senior Juan Gorostiaga will line up at left tackle and left guard, respectively, giving Smith a chance to run at will on that side. The trademark power running game also should ease pressure from junior Mywan Jackson, the new quarterback.

A converted receiver, Jackson's versatility has convinced Callahan to modify his triple-option attack to include the shotgun. If there's a major question mark on offense, it's the absence of a proven fullback.

"We think (Jackson) runs like Jameel Williams and throws the ball like Justin Hickman, so we're going to open our offense up a little bit more," Callahan said.

If that added dimension works even modestly, look out, because Armwood may not need many points to win each Friday. Among the defensive stars: junior middle linebacker Petey Smith, who could be playing for some Division I programs today.

356245_2 3) Of the county's four new coaches, which will find success the soonest?

Without question, Berkeley Prep's Dominick Ciao. The Buccaneers pulled off the coup of the offseason when they lured Ciao out of semi-retirement to replace Frank Sullivan, and could reap the benefits of that move by as early as 2008.

Ciao's success (132 wins, a state runner-up finish) in 17 seasons at Jesuit will attract the type of high-caliber players who previously wouldn't have considered Berkeley. What's more, his ball-control style of play, which reeks of lunchboxes and leather helmets, is foolproof.

The other three newcomers -- King's Earl Garcia III, Freedom's Marquel Blackwell and Tampa Bay Tech's Cornelius Culpepper -- could struggle mightily out of the box. We'll reserve further judgment until each can establish their identities, not to mention some depth.

4) How will Jefferson respond to the shooting death of standout linebacker C.J. Mills?

If we knew the answer to that, we'd be in a far more lucrative line of work. The loss of Mills' strength and playmaking skills are probably the least of Coach Mike Fenton's worries. Suddenly, Fenton has several dozen tattered psyches on his hands, and time will be needed to mend them.

Our guess is, the Dragons will honor Mills' memory by playing harder than ever, which could prove a greater triumph than any district championship.

5) While we're on the subject of Jefferson, who replaces Stephen Garcia at quarterback?

Rangy senior Zach Grossi, who started 10 games for Sickles as a sophomore and threw five touchdown passes in relief of Garcia last season. Grossi will be pushed by sophomore Doug williams Jr., whose upside includes an obvious NFL bloodline. Conventional thinking is, Grossi will lead the Dragons this year, with Williams taking over for 2008 and '09.

Largo's Paschal signs with Eagles

Np_261081_ho_regpasch_1Former Largo standout Marcus Paschal has signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The three-year deal, which was finalized shortly following the NFL Draft, puts the Iowa free safety in a "great situation."

Paschal will get to rejoin former Hawkeyes teammate, Eagles safety Sean Considine. Considine, a fourth round pick in 2005, was the Eagles' third -leading tackler last season.

"I can learn a lot from him," Paschal said. "And Brian Dawkins, he's one of the best in the business."

Paschal will also play with another former Pinellas County standout, Eagles DE Darren Howard (Boca Ciega).

Circle the date: On Dec.2, the Eagles host Seattle, which signed former Land O'Lakes receiver Logan Payne (Minnesota). If both Paschal and Payne break mini-camp, the two former Big Ten foes could match up with each other once again...

Payne to the NFL

Former Land O'Lakes star Logan Payne signed a free agent contract Sunday with the Seattle Seahawks to become the first Land O'Lakes player to sign with an NFL team. Payne led the Minnesota Golden Gophers with 59 receptions, 804 yard and nine touchdowns in 2006.

FHSAA Class 2A Track Finals: Follow Along Here

The latest from Winter Park: South Lake junior Jeff Demps set a new state record with a 10.37 in the 100 meters, eclipsing the previous mark of 10.38, which was held by Coral Springs' Walter Dix and Ocala Forest's Tony McCall.

St. Petersburg Catholic high jumper Jaggar MacDonald finished second behind Crystal River's Ronnie Baldner, who cleared 6-10 en route to the state title. . . Hernando's 4 by 800 relay team had a great showing, placing second with a school-record 8:03.19. . .For complete details and updates on local kids from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando counties who are competing at the Class 2A track finals today, click here.

Locals in NFL Draft

PaschalAs you watch the NFL Draft over the next two days, keep an eye out for a few former Tampa Bay area prep standouts that could get their names called.

There's former St. Pete Catholic playmaker Chris Davis (Florida State), who said that he's heard he could get picked as early as the third round and as late as the fifth. Davis said he made visits to St. Louis, Philadelphia and New England, with most teams saying they like him as a slot receiver and punt returner.

Davis joked he wasn't planning any draft parties over the weekend, because "you never know how things will turn out."

At this rate, Davis may go before Notre Dame's Brady Quinn....

Then there's former Largo QB/DB Marcus Paschal (pictured). Paschal played safety for Iowa, following the footsteps of Colts safety Bob Sanders. Paschal, who helped himself at the NFL Combine, said he could go in the late rounds, or possibly as an undrafted free agent.

"All I want is a chance," Paschal said.

Another guy under the radar could be former Land O'Lakes receiver Logan Payne. Payne played for Minnesota and could be the kind of possession, slot receiver in a similar mold to Brandon Stokley..Payne will likely be a late-round pick or free agent pickup.

Softball showdowns: Pinellas vs Hillsborough

Sp_185136_cerr_disalvatore The results of Friday's region softball semis have set up a few interesting showdowns Tuesday for region championships.

There are some of the best in Pinellas County (Countryside, Palm Harbor) facing some of Hillsborough's best (Chamberlain and Gaither).

Countryside will play district rival Gaither for the fourth time this season; Gaither won two of the three meetings, including a close victory in the district title game, partly thanks to an illegal pitch.

PHU is coming off a hitting clinic, pounding out 17 hits in beating Seminole 16-2 on Friday. They're clicking on all cylinders, but the Hurricanes will run into likely their toughest test yet in Chamberlain, ranked in the top 5 nearly all season in the state rankings...

Which teams - and county - will come out on top?

DADE CITY -- This is what happens when you have great faith in your kid.
Belleview dad Jim Smith agreed to shave his head if Belleview won a district title. Who knows what he would have done if Pasco hadn't defeated the Rattlers by a score of 8-3 in a Class 4A region semifinal Friday. His daughter, Leigha, asked him to keep the Mohawk. Anything for his little girl.
The Pirates along with Land O'Lakes advanced to Tuesday's region final round.
Pasco will host Groveland South Lake, which knocked Zephyrhills out of the playoffs behind the arm of Shaina Dent. And the Gators, after an 18-1 win Friday against Winter Park Lake Howell, travel to Newsome.

Central's Harris Wins Three Regional Titles

Central sprinter/jumper DuJuan "Foxx" Harris turned in a dynamite performance at the Class 3A, Region 2 meet at Astronaut High in Titusville Thursday.

The Bears senior won the 100, 200 and long jump while placing second in the triple jump to qualify for states in four events.

It was the most competition Harris has faced all season, with five opponents entering the meet with 100 times of under 11 seconds. But after a disappointing second-place finish in the triple jump, Harris had all the motivation he needed for the 100 and the 200.

"Foxx always seems to rise," Central coach Eric Milholland said. "Whenever there is competition, he seems to rise a little higher."

Harris is believed to be the first athlete in modern Hernando County history to win three regional titles.

Dunedin standouts sign

Np_250830_whis_gilghrest_1 Dunedin senior Matt Gilghrest showed how patience - and persistence - can pay off.
The Falcons two-sport standout was admittedly “discouraged” when a back injury forced him to miss his entire junior football season, and scared some college scouts away.
But Gilghrest’s strong senior season, in which he tallied 75 tackles and five interceptions helped land him a late scholarship from Bethune-Cookman. The 6-3, 180--pound senior, who scored touchdwons on four of his six receptions last season, will play receiver for the Wildcats.
“He really flew under the radar,” Dunedin coach Mark Everett said. “He can play anywhere (on the field) - I’m excited for him.”
Gilghrest’s teammate, kicker Evan McKeon, plans to be a perferred walk-on at Louisville, where he earned a full academic scholarship, Everett said.
“Their coaches said he’ll be the starting kicker in August,” Everett said. “It’s his position to lose.”
Softball signing: Boca Ciega pitcher Christina Hughes signed with Eckerd College. Hughes boasted a 1.09 E.R.A. with 125 strikeouts for the Pirates, while hitting .406. Hughes is the second county standout to sign with the Tritons; so did Pinellas Park shortstop Jessica Pridemore.

Michael Burgess in SI

Tp_236930_cass_saladino_3x Hillsborough slugger Michael Burgess "is the nation's best high school power-hitting prospect'' according to a story in this week's Sports Illustrated. The story, titled "The King of Pop,'' describes two mammoth Burgess homers: the blast in last season's Class 5A title game with which Burgess joined Ken Griffey Jr., Bo Jackson and Frank Thomas as the only players to clear the 40-foot centerfield wall at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota and the shot -- hit with a cracked bat -- that cleared a six-story building at the Aflac All-American Classic home run derby last August in San Diego. Dwight Gooden, Gary Sheffield, Carl Everett, Chris Ray and Elijah Dukes also receive mentions as former Hillsborough High players who have gone on to play in the majors.

Signing, Signing, Everywhere A Signing

As a brief reprieve from the onslaught of spring-sports playoff action, we present all of the county's recent local signings (or at least the ones we know of):

Thomas Parrott, Plant (football): Northern State (Aberdeen,S.D.)

Devinn Adams, Riverview (football):  Fairmont State

Malcom Shavers, Riverview (football): Glenville State

Kyle Stephen, Riverview (football): Glenville State

Chris Luther, Riverview (football): Carnegie-Mellon

Kyle Eastham, Riverview (baseball): South Florida

Wigburto Vazquez, Riverview (baseball): South Florida CC

Tony Suarez, Riverview (baseball): South Florida CC

Eliana Nevarez, Riverview (soccer): Thomas University

And finally, our personal favorite:

Andrew Darst, Jesuit (basketball): Rensselaer Polytechnic Institue

Gotta love a basketball program with the initials RPI. Seriously, Darst departs Jesuit as one of the Tigers' most successful players (1,202 career points, record 102 varsity starts).

"What I really liked about Andrew is that he makes the other four men on the court better," RPI coach Michael Griffin said. "He can score, but his court vision and unselfishness will make Andrew an exceptional college player."

Let's talk some baseball

The game-time temperature is about 85 degrees at Hernando high. There are blue skies and cumulus clouds hanging over head. The grass is green, and 20 or so players are stretching out on top of it in center field. I smell french fries and hot dogs.

The theme from Top Gun is playing.

Isn't baseball great?

Let's play manager. . .

You have three games to win a district title. When do you pitch your ace? Up here at the Class 4A, District 8 tournament, Zephyrhills decided to throw Florida State signee Geoff Parker against Springstead in the first round, rather than saving him for a tough semi-final match-up against Nature Coast. Nature Coast did like wise, throwing ace Bryan Daniels against South Sumter in the first round.

It paid off for the Sharks -- Travis Murray pitched a complete game and also had four RBIs as Nature Coast beat ZHills 7-3 to advance to the 4A-8 title game against either Pasco or Hernando.

Zephyrhills starter Austin Adams was pulled in the first inning after walking three and allowing two runs, one of which came on a balk.

State track - Who's got a shot?

Sp_265591_alle_macdonald_02There are typically surprises coming out of each season's state track meet.

St. Petersburg Catholic senior Jaggar MacDonald (left), a high jumping novice two months ago, is a state title contender in Saturday's 2A meet (story linked below). But he's far from the Tampa Bay Area's only shot at bringing home a championship as the state meets begin today.......

http://www.sptimes.com/2007/04/26/Sports/MacDonald_s_skills_pu.shtml

Zephyrhills' Sederrik Cunningham is a potential double-threat in the 100 and 200. Then there's the Jesuit distance crew, which has its share of competitors.. Hernando's Ben Martucci's got his eyes on the 4 by 800, 1600 and 3200.

Which guys - and girls -- do you think have the best chance at bringing home a state championship medal from Winter Park?

Signings are package deals

Np_248889_whis_hartzog_02 Lakewood's Kevin Hartzog, Jeff Ardis and Cedric Sutton will all be Spartans next season.

University of Dubuque Spartans, that is.

The Lakewood trio have signed with the Division-III program in Iowa which plays in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Hartzog, a 5-11, 205 senior, will play quarterback for the Spartans. He filled in last season when starter Corey Henderson went down, leading Lakewood in a great rally against St. Petersburg. Lakewood coach Otis Dixon said Hartzog has a "chance to start by his sophomore year."

"The coach fell in love with him - said he reminded him of their current QB," Dixon said. "And he's graduating after next year."

Sutton will play safety for Dubuque, and Ardis will play receiver. They make five Lakewood players to sign in the offseason, with receivers Ronnie Lane and running back Jonte Green going to Benedict (SC).

Another county school with a bevy of signings is Clearwater Central Catholic. Kevin Denison will play outside linebacker for Quincy University, Jay Campara will play either center or guard for John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, and Joe Strickland committed to St. Vincent's College in Latrobe, PA.

Strickland started as tight end for the Marauders last season, but will play H back or linebacker at St. Vincent's.

Then there's the Marauder going furthest north, kicker Anthony Leandri, who signed with Northern Michigan in Marquette, MI. Leandri graduated from CCC in 2006 and spent the last season as preferred walkon at USF.

......In a combo-deal for girls basketball signings, Dunedin point guard Chelsea Turgeon signed with West Florida, joining teammate, forward Kimarie Bock.

Softball Scoop - Region Playoff Updates

Np_264305_mcla_oconnell_4The region softball playoffs have begun - and so far, there's no shortage of drama.

Palm Harbor scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to beat Plant, 8-7 in a Class 5A region quarterfinal Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore pitcher Courtney O'Connell (left) started the rally with a double, moved over on a sacrifice bunt. O'Connell scored on an RBI single by Jacquelyn Katchuk.

The Hurricanes (22-4) move on to the region semis to face Seminole, 5-0 winners over Lakewood Ranch on Tuesday. PHU lost to Seminole, 6-0 a few weeks ago...

The matchup should be a great one, pitting two pitchers who are on a roll. PHU's O'Connell has been extremely steady for the Hurricanes, winning a pitcher's duel against Pinellas Park's Sara Nevins in districts. For Seminole, freshman Emily Crawford carried a no-hitter into the seventh against Lakewood Ranch, owning the inside corner.

***Elsewhere in 5A, Northeast scattered five hits, but couldn't crack Venice, which beat the Vikings 2-0 for the second straight year in a region quarterfinal.

Northeast pitcher Dani Seibert, who will pitch for St. Petersburg College next season, gave up just three hits. The Vikings jumped out to a banner start this season, at 11-1, and were ranked as high as No. 8 in the Class 5A poll.

But as their bats went south, Northeast struggled down the stretch, losing three of its last four.

"We just peaked too soon," Northeast coach Holli Yates said.

Venice will take on Chamberlain, which beat East Lake 8-1 on Tuesday night. It was a tough draw for the Eagles, considering Chamberlain was ranked No. 2 in the state heading into the region quarterfinal.

**In Class 2A, Northside Christian scored four runs in its final two at bats to come from behind and defeat visiting St. John Neumann 4-2.

The Mustangs (16-5) now advance to Friday’s region semifinal for the first time since 2003. They play Mount Dora Bible at 4 in St Pete.

**In 3A, St. Petersburg Catholic rolled to an 8-0 win over Bishop Verot. Senior Deanna Henriott was a one-person wrecking crew, hitting two home runs (including a first inning grand slam) for six RBI. Henriott, who has a county-low .08 ERA, also threw a complete, game 3-hitter.

That sets up a showdown Friday at SPC (4 pm) with the Barons (22-1), ranked No 3 in 3A, and Trinity Prep (ranked No 2 in 3A). Trinity Prep beat Frostproof 4-0 on Tues.

***In 1A, Canterbury played with danger - allowing 17 baserunners and four bases-loaded situations - but got huge outs when they needed them in an 8-3 win over Sarasota Christian.

Seventh-grader Emily Winesett picked up the win in the circle,  stranding 14 of 17 runners. The Crusaders received an offensive boost from Marissa Hamilton, who belted a solo homer and helped Canterbury build a 7-0 lead in the first two innings.

Canterbury will host a region semi Friday at 4 vs Cambridge, trying to advance to their first region final.

Countryside baseball under review

Countryside's baseball program is under review by the Pinellas County school district amid allegations of misconduct. Former Cougar assistant Tracy Paulton said he filed a complaint against the school's principal, Gary Schlereth, with the district's Office of Professional Standards.

Paulton said the principal harassed the coaches with daily questions about his son's playing time.

The district confirmed that the baseball team is uder review, but school board spokeswoman Andrea Zahn would not comment about the investigation or whether Schlereth was part of the review.

Paulton is not the only one who complained. Former assistant coaches Jeff Ciszkowski, Dan Witowski and D.J. Coles and former head coach Darnell Coles said they were all interviewed by OPS.

Schlereth denies the allegations.

"This is not true," Schlereth said. "I have not confronted any coach out here about my kid's playing time."

Signings - and coaching searches

Sp_258078_rial_genogreen_1For a break from the spring sports playoff madness, here's some news and notes for hoops and football. Between coaches searches (Countryside) and signings (St. Pete), it's been a busy week...

St. Petersburg senior forward Geno Green and guard Anthony Ogunleye will sign Thursday with Paine College, a Division II program in Augusta, Georgia.

Green, a 6-foot-5 forward who averaged a double-double this season, will likely play the wing. Ogunleye, the Green Devils trusty point guard, also "should make an impact right away," St. Pete coach Chris Blackwell said....

The duo may not be the only county standouts playing D-II. Clearwater's Justin Morin made an overnight visit to Eckerd last week, rooming with guard Josh King. Morin said he had a great time, and that the Tritons are his "top choice."

Morin, a second-team All County selection, said he's received interest from other Sunshine State Conference programs like Saint Leo and Lynn, but he's just trying to see if he can get the scholarship numbers to work out at Eckerd.

In coaching news, Countryside interviewed two candidates for its boys basketball opening. Largo assistant Mark Carter said he had a 20-minute sitdown with the school's six-member coaching search committee, which he said "went well."

Two other candidates are believed to be a candidate who coached for 15 years in Indiana, as well as an out-of-county coach from the Orlando area. More on that to come...

Carter, 29, has spent the last four years as JV coach at Largo after playing and graduating from Clearwater Christian College. The Asheville, NC native gave Countryside administrators a 17-page portfolio with practice plans, philosophies on everything from defense to discipline.

"They said they wanted someone who was fair and consistent," Carter said.

Countryside assistant principal Steve Blumer said Monday that there's been no decision made and that they are still in the interview process......

In football news, Largo senior Mike Helm will visit Methodist University in North Carolina this weekend. Largo basketball coach Phil Price said Helm is pursuing a potential two-sport deal with hoops and football.

In basketball, "Mike would be the best guy they've got," Price said. "I think he's an awesome player.

Helm averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds and 5 assists for the Packers, earning third-team All County honors.

Who's the Fastet Man in the Tampa Bay Area?

Sederrik_cunningham    Dujuan_harris_sprint

We've got a couple of burners up here on the North Suncoast:

Zephyrhills' Sederrik Cunningham ran a 21.1 200-meter dash at the Class 2A, Region 3 meet this weekend. He also ran a 10.76 in the 100 meters.

Central's DuJuan Harris, meanwhile, ran a 10.87 in the 100.

So who's the fastest man in the Tampa Bay area?

Is it Harris? Is it Cunningham? Is it someone from Hillsborough and Pinellas?

More importantly, could they beat John Cotey in a foot race?

Last Manager Standing?

Veteran Bloomingdale baseball coach K.B. Scull's confirmation Monday that he's stepping down at the end of the season following 22 years as a local varsity coach spawned another thought:

Which of the area's remaining multi-decade coaches -- Jefferson's Pop Cuesta, Gaither's Frank Permuy or King's Jim Macaluso -- will last the longest?

Carl Crawford might be playing in Old-Timers' games before we discover the answer. Permuy has retired from teaching, and the other two are bearing down on classroom retirement, but none appear ready to hang up their stirrups any time soon.

Cuesta, whose 35 years as Dragons coach makes him the longest-tenured of the county's active coaches, said Monday he'll keep coaching even after state guidelines force him to retire as a teacher in 2008. Macaluso, coach at his alma mater since 1976, also said he has no immediate plans to leave the dugout.

Permuy, who retired from the classroom last May and underwent successful prostate cancer surgery last summer, has offered nary a hint he's ready to leave the program he began from scratch in 1985.

So we ask you: Which of these three coaches will blink last? Which still will be making signs from the third-base box after the others have walked away?

Your guess is valued. Just be prepared to wait a few years, maybe even a decade, to see if it's correct.

Scull Stepping Down As Bulls Coach

Over the past several years, Bloomingdale baseball coach K.B. Scull had collected a figurative mountain of reasons for walking away from the job he has held for 12 seasons.

Descending that mountain always was the hard part.

But after lenthy contemplation, Scull, 50, said he “finally got enough nerve to pull the trigger.” This postseason, which began Monday night with a first-round district tournament game against Tampa Bay Tech, will be Scull’s last as Bulls coach.

The reasons? “You ain’t got enough paper,” said Scull, whose 22-year career as a varsity coach included 10 seasons (1986-95) at Armwood.

“It was just my time, my time to go, that’s all I can say. I went out on my own terms, which was good, and have been coaching in the afternoons for 28 years, 22 of them in baseball. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made.”

The county’s fourth longest-tenured active coach, Scull has won more than 300 career games. His 2002 and ‘04 Bloomingdale clubs reached the Class 6A state tournament, and his ‘89 Armwood team won the Saladino Tournament.

The competition and camaraderie, he said, will be difficult to leave behind, but the 12- to 16-hour workdays and meager coaching supplement ($1,716.54 annually) won’t.

“It’s been fun,” said Scull, who remains a driver’s education teacher and athletic department business manager at Bloomingdale. “I enjoyed every minute.”

Nixon featured in Sports Illustrated

Ot_261459_borc_nixonlee_3 In case you missed it, Lakewood senior guard Ed Nixon was mentioned in last week's SI (with Dirk Nowitzki on the cover).

Nixon, a recent Virginia Commonwealth signee, was part of "The List" on page 39 in the magazine's high school section.

The item talked about VCU coach Anthony Grant, a former Florida assistant, adding "a key recruit" in Nixon, an all-state selection in Class 5A, the fifth player from Florida to commit to the Rams. The picture above (by Times photogropher James Borchuck) was included.

Coaching update: Largo assistant Mark Carter was scheduled to interview with Countryside last Monday for its basketball opening ... More updates to come.

Philly high school athletes save woman from burning building

Not a local story, but I ran across it tonight and found it pretty interesting. Three track and field athletes from Germantown High in Philadelphia noticed a burning building across the street during a meet and immediately ran to the rescue of a woman inside.

East Lake's Garcia signs

East Lake senior guard Josh Garcia signed with Pasco Hernando Community College.

Garcia, one of the county's top scorers at 22 ppg, was a three-year starter for the Eagles. This past year, he earned third-team All-County honors.

Pasco "got a steal," East Lake coach Joe Bloznalis said. "Lots of JUCOs got in late because they thought he was going to a four-year. Josh is Division-I talent."

Garcia, a playmaker who can play both guard positions, had the grades (2.6 GPA), but couldn't get his SAT score where it needed to be for Division I recruiters. Bloznalis believes Garcia will be "going to the next level," after some time at Pasco.

That's what happened to former Clearwater forward Trevor Lee, who parlayed two years at Pasco Hernando CC to signing with Eckerd, which made it to the Sweet 16 of the Division II basketball tournament.

"I'm really excited," Garcia said. "I like the coaches and the players there. It should work out well."

Wilkie Expected To Miss Region Final

Jesuit senior Mark Wilkie, the No. 1 singles player for the Tigers'  district championship team, is expected to miss Friday's Class 2A, Region 5 dual match at Sarasota Booker with a lingering back ailment.

Coach Joe Curtis confirmed Thursday evening that Wilkie, forced to withdraw from the No. 1 singles final in Tuesday's District 10 tournament after only one game, likely won't play. The winner of Friday's match advances to next week's 2A team tournament at Hillsborough Community College.

"At this point in time we're going to take him along but we're not planning on playing him," Curtis said.

Curtis said Wilkie's back problems have nagged him most of the season. A four-year starter for the Tigers, Wilkie is awaiting the results of a bone scan.

"We haven't heard anything," Curtis said. "It's just an inflammation at this point."

Loucks will play spring football

Sp_256405_rial_loucks_4 Clearwater junior point guard Luke Loucks, a four-star basketball recruit, said he plans to play spring football.

Loucks, a 6-foot-5 quarterback, was one of the top signal callers in the county last season, earning second-team All County honors.

But Loucks and his family mulled over the decision to play football for a while; basketball is his future as far as scholarships go, and between AAU tournaments and college visits, it'll take up a huge chunk of his time. But his love for football is bringing him back - at least, for now.

"It's going to make for a crazy summer," Loucks said. "But it'll be allright."

Loucks said it's still up in the air whether he'll continue playing football into the fall; that decision, he said, will be left up to the coach of the college basketball program he commits to this summer.

There are hordes of basketball coaches jumping in on the Loucks sweepstakes. The latest? Minnesota's Tubby Smith, who called Loucks Wednesday night. The intriguing one? Michigan's John Beilein, who Loucks built a relationship with while Beilein recruited him while coach at WVU.

USF has made a significant push with new coach Stan Heath, whom Loucks visited with on Sunday and said is "a top notch guy."

Loucks, who was offered by the previous USF staff, received an offer from Heath on Sunday after playing pick-up games with some Bulls players. Loucks said he doesn't have any favorites right now, but USF is in the mix.

Loucks did spend some time on UCF's campus to attend the team banquet (his brother, Jacob, plays for the Golden Knights).

But on Monday, he traveled with his mother to the Georgia Tech campus, and his visit went "really, really well."

Loucks may not be giving any hints on the top teams on his list, but from what it sounds like, Georgia Tech, Florida State and, lately, Michigan are right up there.

But, as Loucks said, in making a decision like this, you can be impressed with a campus and facilities all you want. But "you're basically picking a coach."

Which one will it be? We'll have to wait and see.

LARGO UPDATE: Looks like Packers stars Ben O'Donnell and Charlie Lytle might come in a package deal. The duo recently received some interest from Missouri-Kansas City and new head coach Matt Brown. Brown, a former WVU and Florida assistant under Billy Donovan, makes this Mid Continent Conference program intriguing to both O'Donnell and Lytle.

Lytle said the two plan to make a visit sometime soon.

Tyler will transfer to UCF

Tyleraj11

Former Palm Harbor star forward A.J. Tyler orally committed Wednesday to play for the University of Central Florida, just one week after receiving his release from Clemson coaches.

Tyler, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound freshman, averaged 5.1 minutes in 30 games for the Tigers, which lost to West Virginia in the NIT championship game.

Tyler, PHU's all-time leading scorer, will have to sit out a season per transfer rules before playing for the Golden Knights.

"It's a really good fit," Tyler said. "They've got a great program, and I like the coaches a lot. It's a place I feel I can grow and improve as a player."

In 2006, Tyler was a Class 5A first-team All State selection, averaging 22 points, just behind three-time Times All Suncoast Player of the Year Aaron Holmes (St. Petersburg Catholic).

But, like Holmes (who transferred from Florida State to USF this winter, Tyler is leaving the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Tyler, heavily recruited by the likes of Clemson, West Virginia and UCF out of high school, chose Clemson initially and thought he'd spend his entire career there. But after he signed, a few members of the Tigers staff left the program, including an assistant and their strength and conditioning coach.

Tyler didn't average a ton of minutes, but wasn't relegated to garbage time, either.

"I thought A.J. made solid progress this year and had a chance to build on that,” Clemson coach Oliver Purnell said after giving Tyler's release.

Tyler said the move wasn't about playing time - or being closer to home. It was more about finding a place - and school - he was comfortable with and a program where he felt he could grow as a player and develop.

Clemson coaches released him, but not to any other ACC school or rival South Carolina. It didn't take long for Tyler to pick UCF.

Gulf swim coach Joe Lampkin was fired last Thursday for unspecified reasons. Swimmers and parents from Gulf's swim program have publically supported the coach. They voiced their objection at a Pasco County School Board meeting Tuesday. They've made T-shirts supporting the coach, signed a petition and written letters.

Above are some samples submitted by Kathy Debow, who is a Gulf graduate and has four children who swim for the Bucs. To the far left is a petition signed by students followed by a second page with more signatures. The third and fourth items are a pair of letters are from parents. And the final two items are a pair of letters from students objecting to Lampkin's firing.

Sproat Signs With Eckerd

Tampa Catholic catcher Jason Sproat has signed with Division II Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, his father confirmed Wednesday.

Though he has struggled at the plate (.175) this season, Sproat has shined behind it, allowing only two passed balls in 16 games. Tampa Catholic is 14-7 entering Thursday's game at Sarasota Cardinal Mooney.

Gulf swimmers protest firing

This from our Pasco County education reporter Jeff Solochek from Tuesday's School Board meeting:

Keep our coach

LAND O'LAKES - Going into the 2006-07 season, one word got used over and over to describe the Gulf High swim team: underdog. Under the leadership of coach Joe Lampkin, the team had a winning season, its first in years, with some swimmers competing at state. Then, after spring break, the school principal fired the coach.

That decision didn't sit well with the team. Twenty members and some parents came out in their school colors Tuesday night to urge the School Board to overturn the dismissal.

"He has been nothing but dedicated," said junior Keelie Peckham, who has been swimming competitively for 10 years. "Coach Lampkin is by far the best coach I have ever seen."

Team captain Ambere Hertzog said while Lampkin could be tough and demanding, he never demeaned students - one of the allegations against him. She said he set high goals and without him, it's unlikely the team will meet those goals. "Swimming is an individual sport with team results," she said. "By taking our coach, you have taken part of our team."

Board chairwoman Marge Whaley said she would refer the issue to superintendent Heather Fiorentino for review.

Hubbard advances to state

ZEPHYRHILLS -- Gulf senior Trevor Hubbard won No. 1 singles at the Class 2A, District 6 tournament for a return shot at the state tournament. He defeated Nature Coast's Jonathon Kidder (6-2, 6-3) for a return to state. Hubbard was ousted from state in the first round last season by Sarasota Booker's Anthony Lipe-Ladenheim (6-2, 6-1).

Baseball Upset: Nature Coast knocks off Pasco

The first time around, Pasco walked into Nature Coast and walked out with a dramatic 2-1 win. This time, Nature Coast dropped into Dade City and returned the favor, knocking off the second-ranked team in the state 10-6. Though the result doesn't change the seeding heading into the Class 4A, District 8 tournament, it definitely proves that the title is up for grabs.

Sunlake goes north for coach

Sunlake High passed on the Pasco County choices -- Bud Hodgens (Wesley Chapel), Brian Wachtel (Ridgewood), Tim Boggess (Seven Springs Middle) and Tom Carter (Land O'Lakes) -- and went to Brooksville for the school's first football coach.

Bill Browning, who coached the Hernado Leopards for eight years and turned the program at Springstead in the right direction (20-70 when he got there) where he was head coach for nine years, is the man.

Sunlake opens in the fall, but Browning will be running his team through spring drills beginning May 1. The Seahawks are playing a varsity schedule their first season.

Best Female Basketball Player in Bay Area History?

I was talking to former Tampa Catholic star Eric Hayes yesterday during a tennis match at Central High, and we were trying to figure out the best female basketball player ever to come out of the bay area. Yes, we both probably need to find a hobby or two, but that's besides the point. I'll put former Hernando star Bernice Mosby up against anybody Hillsborough or Pinellas has to offer (I don't think they even had girls basketball in Pasco County before Sthefany Thomas arrived at Wesley Chapel). While doing research after she was drafted No. 6 overall by the WNBA's Washington Mystics last week, I was amazed at just how thoroughly she dominated her sport during her time here at Hernando: a state final four, two regional finals, and 27.7 points per game and 14.5 rebounds per game as a senior.

Can anyone else in the area touch her?

Frazier Steps Down At Hillsborough

A promotion at his day job has forced Andrikk Frazier to give up his evening one -- coach of Hillsborough’s boys basketball team.

The former Tampa Prep and University of South Florida standout guard confirmed Thursday morning he has resigned as Terriers coach after two trying seasons on and off the court.

Hillsborough, forced to play and practice at nearby Memorial Middle School while construction creeps along on a new on-campus gym, finished 8-43 under Frazier.

“I decided to give it a shot this (past) year,” said Frazier, regional manager for the Tampa Electric Company’s community relations department. “But with what needs to be done as far as building a program, it’s not conducive to my schedule.”

A married father of two young girls, Frazier said he typically found himself logging 14-hour days -- or longer -- during the season. Because the Terriers had to share the gym at Memorial with other teams, they often didn’t begin practices until 6 p.m. Nonetheless, last season’s club (7-18) showed noticeable improvement from the 2005-06 team that won one game.

Frazier, 30, didn’t rule out a return to coaching in the future. “It would have to be the right situation,” he said. “At Hillsborough, there are a lot of other dynamics that played into it. It would have to be a situation where I could focus on coaching.”

Hoops recruiting: Michigan enters Loucks sweepstakes

Sp_256405_rial_loucks_4Clearwater junior guard Luke Loucks received an interesting voicemail on his cell phone Wednesday night.

It was former West Virginia coach - and now University of Michigan head man - John Beilein. Beilein, a big reason why Loucks was seriously considering WVU among his many suitors, left the four-star recruit is new cell phone number and wanted to get on Loucks radar.

"It's nice up here, a little snowy, but other than that - it's great," Beilein said in the message.

Now Loucks wants to find out for himself. The 6-foot-5 point guard, a 1st team All County selection, said he plans to set up a visit to Ann Arbor later this spring (maybe snow will stop by then)....

"He's definitely a good coach," Loucks said of Beilein. "He runs a system I think I'd fit pretty well in."

Pretty well? Loucks fits Beilein's system to a "T."

The 52-year-old coach runs a structured offense based on strong ballhandling, outside shooting and basketball IQ. Check. Check.Check. One Big East assistant coach told me this year that Loucks has "a basketball IQ that's just off the charts."

Plus, Beilein's 1-3-1 defense also meshes well with Loucks admittedly less-than-super foot speed, which is getting better since he's been working out with a new personal trainer.

The Wolverines have two top-50 recruits committed for 2007 - both slashing, off-guards (Oak Hill Academy's Alex Legion and Michigan's Mr Basketball Manny Harris from Detroit Redford).

I'm sure Beilein can envision Loucks, a prolific passer, finding Legion and Harris on a fast break.....hmmm.

The Wolverines may be one new, intruiging option, but Loucks has many (offers from Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Florida State, UCF, St. Joseph's). Case in point: this week, he's getting a visit from Georgia Friday, visiting UCF Saturday, then flying to Georgia Tech to spend Monday before coming back to Clearwater for an expected visit from Florida State.

"I'm just trying to catch a nap when I can," Loucks said with a chuckle.

As for his favorites? Loucks isn't budging. Politely he'll say that every school has its good points, etc.

He did love his unofficial visit to FSU, and their coaches. Georgia Tech coaches are in contact with him at least once a week and he'll be seeing them soon. Loucks' older brother, Jacob, plays at UCF.

At this rate, Beilein better make a bee line to the Tampa Bay Area....

O'DONNELL: Largo senior point guard Ben O'Donnell thought he had it broken down - he'd decide between East Tennessee State and WIlliam & Mary, where he's made visits. But in the past few days, O'Donnell has been in contact with both Stanford and Utah.....

So much for being simple......This one may take a while longer.

All of this comes on the day Times Player of the Year, Lakewood guard Ed Nixon, signs with Virginia Commonwealth, and a day after Lakewood's Anthony Dorsey signs with Odessa College (see previous posts for more details on those), and former Palm Harbor star forward A.J. Tyler says he's transferring from Clemson..

Phew. I feel like Mel Kiper on the day of the NFL Draft.

Like Loucks, I'm sure I'll find time for a nap or two

Countryside beats PHU, will play for PCAC

Np_262776_garn_pin_csidene_2This one was a typical clash between two of North county's perennial softball powers.

Countryside beat Palm Harbor, 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon, beating the Hurricanes for the first time in the last seven tries and clinching a spot in Friday's PCAC championship game against Northeast (15-2).

The only run was knocked in by Countryside sophomore Brittany Datillo, who had an RBI single in the third. Both teams put baserunners on - and in scoring position - but the Cougars were the only ones to capitalize.

The PCAC title game, to be held at 4 pm at Misty Springs Park, will be a rematch of the 2004 championship game (the last time Countryside won the title). The two teams played earlier this season, with the Cougars prevailing, 3-0, giving Northeast the first of just two losses this season.

Countryside (19-4) is finally getting healthy in its roller-coaster season. Wednesday was just the eighth game in which star shortstop GiOnna Disalvatore and catcher Alyssa Allbritten played in the field and hit. Disalvatore has suffered from soreness in her right shoulder, Allbritten missed a few weeks with bronchitis and nagging injuries.

PHU (19-4) has played just twice in the last three weeks - both losses (other to Seminole). They still need one more win to clinch their 10th straight 20-win season. That will have to come next week, when PHU is the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A, District 11 tournament.

YOUR TAKE: Who will win the PCAC?

COMING UP: Check out the Times Thursday for the weekly softball package, including stats, rankings and coverage of the Countryside-PHU game. On Saturday, we will run a softball district preview...

Former PHU hoops star Tyler leaving Clemson

Tyleraj11 A.J. Tyler, Palm Harbor’s all-time leading scorer, is transferring from Clemson.

The 6-foot-9, 225-pound freshman forward met with Tigers coaches Monday and was granted his release Wednesday morning.

Tyler said he plans to release his transcripts to a handful of schools, including the University of South Florida and UCF.

"It just didn’t really seem like the right fit for me - the right place for my college career," Tyler said in an interview Wednesday. "I went into it expecting to be here for four years, but I realized this wasn’t going to be the situation I thought it’d be

At Clemson, Tyler averaged 5.1 minutes while seeing action in 30 of Clemson’s games. The Tigers went (25-11) and lost in the NIT championship to West Virginia, whom Tyler also seriously considered out of high school; Tyler was PHU's first-ever Division I basketball recruit.

Tyler said Clemson coaches wanted him to stay, but granted his release; he just can't transfer to another ACC school or the University of South Carolina.

Nixon signs with VCU

Ot_261459_borc_llwnixon_3 Lakewood senior guard Ed Nixon signed with Virginia Commonwealth this morning.

The 6-foot-4 swingman was the Times Pinellas County Player of the Year and a first-team All State selection for 5A, averaging 17.8 points in leading the Spartans to the state championship game against Lake Howell.

Nixon visited VCU campus over the weekend and liked coach Anthony Grant, as well as the campus and players. He chose VCU over Georgia, UCF and Tennesee Tech, among others.

Nixon is the fifth player from Florida to join this year's recruiting class for Grant, a former assistant under Florida coach Billy Donovan. One is Lake Howell point guard Joey Rodriguez, another first team All-State pick, who began lobbying Nixon to join him at VCU when the two played together at the FACA All Star Game.

VCU won the Colonial Athletic Association tournament title and upset Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Rams (28-7) set a school record for victories in a season before finally bowing out to Pittsburgh in OT in the secnod round of the NCAAs...

Nixon, a four-year varsity player, was a key member of Lakewood's 2005 state championship team. So was senior guard Anthony Dorsey, who signed with Odessa College (Tex), a junior college power, on Monday.

Softball Scoop

Np_238742_flyn_phusoft1Fifth in a series of weekly, web-exclusive columns on Pinellas County softball. Check Thursday's Times for the print package, with stats, rankings and features.

Palm Harbor softball coach Chuck Poetter is plenty peeved.

The Hurricanes game with Dunedin was washed out Tuesday, meaning his young team will have played just one game in the past three weeks.

Gotta love Spring Break, eh?

"It's like starting the season all over again," he said.

Well, if so, they're going to start with a bang on Wednesday. Barring a rainstorm, the Hurricanes will play against rival Countryside at 4 pm at Misty Springs Park in Clearwater.

The matchup will decide which team claims North bragging rights and a berth in Friday's PCAC Championship game against Northeast.

PHU has won the last six meetings between the two teams, but the Hurricanes (19-3) have literally started fresh. Seven of PHU's 10 starters are either freshmen or sophomores, contrasting with Countryside's senior-laden squad.

The Cougars (18-4) have struggled to stay healthy all season long. Case in point: star shortstop GiOnna Disalvatore (UCLA) and catcher Alyssa Allbritten (N.C. State) have played a combined total of seven games together in which they both played defensively and hit.

Disalvatore has been battling inflammation in her throwing shoulder, and will likely play short Wednesday for the first time since March 14. Allbritten suffered from bronchitis this season, and missed some time with nagging injuries.

Then you take Cougars ace pitcher Desiree Baker (14-4, .77 ERA) who is battling tendonitis in her elbow.

The trio will likely gut it out Wednesday with hopes to build momentum towards next week's district playoffs. PHU will try to clinch its 10th- straight 20-win season, and shrug off last week's loss to Seminole...

JUCO for Softball Junkies: There's a big college softball showdown in town Thursday, if any local fans are curious. St. Petersburg College's womens softball team (41-14), currently in second place in the Suncoast Conference, host Manatee (45-8 and ranked No. 3 in the country). The doubleheader starts at 5 pm at the Eddie C Moore Complex in Clearwater..

More coverage: For more, check Wednesday's Times for a preview of the PHU-Countryside game, and on Thursday, the weekly print softball package with stats, recruiting updates and coverage of the game. On Saturday, we'll run district tourney previews..

I'll post the latest state rankings as soon as they come off the press tonight..
