Locals Set For FACA All-Star Game

GriffithSix Hillsborough County prep baseball standouts, some of them major league draft prospects, get a few final cuts before pro scouts this weekend at the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Classic at Sebring's Firemen's Field.

Playing for the West team will be Hillsborough center fielder Michael Burgess, Middleton right-handed pitcher Nevin Griffith, Alonso right-hander/infielder Tommy Toledo, Gaither lefty/outfielder Chris Jones, Wharton right-hander Derrick Stultz and Jesuit ace right-hander Kevin Quackenbush.

The West team plays the East tonight at 7, preceded by the North-South game at 2:30. The losers and winners of both games square off Saturday. The players took batting practice (wooden bats only) and ran the 60-yard dash for scouts Thursday.

Major League Baseball's first-year player draft is set for June 7. Griffith and Burgess are widely believed to be the area's most coveted pro prospects.
