Time to start working on your aim, athletes: steroid testing is now law
As expected, Gov. Charlie Crist signed H.B. 461 into law this afternoon, meaning up to one percent of high school athletes in the state of Florida will be subjected to random steroid testing this upcoming school year.
The FHSAA plans on meeting with Rep. Marcelo Llorente's office in the near future to hammer out the logistics of the programs. With a seemingly meager $100,000 in funding from the government, the association will have to work to stretch its money. It remains to be seen how many athletes are tested but steroid tests can range between $100 and $200 a pop.

There spending money on this and school budgets are being cut. This makes no sense. I can't see the point of testing about one athlete per school. I assume this athlete will be randomly selected. This is a waste of money. I don't think this will deter any student athletes who are using because the odds of being tested are very slim.

This is such a waste of much needed money! What is the point of only testing such a small sample of students? It seems obvious to me that this is only a dog and pony show for the politicians. Wake up and realize how bad the schools are and spend the money where it needs to be spent - on the students!

The money will not be spent on testing, but on court costs..the first kid to be targeted should sue......if everyone isn't being included, all sports, all activities, then no one should be tested. A hasty decision.....and a stupid one.

Where can you find the list of the banned substances? From what I understand there is more than just steroids.

In regards to the list of banned substances, it's a great question. Right now, there isn't one. This is one of those things that the FHSAA must iron out with the representative's office. The FHSAA is likely going to work with the Center for Drug Free Sport. Here's a list of some of the substances they test for:

Thank you David, I had someone tell me that Creatine was going to be on the banned substance list.

What happen when a kid tests dirty?
If its anything like school discipline- do they make him sit out one game and then everything is bueno?
No penalties for the coach?
This just another "looks good, does nothing" program.
They'd be better off with a hotline- let the kids narc eachother, then you get the real dirty kids, not just one in a haystack.
